Book excerpt: The technique of using Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) materials to repair and strengthen various concrete members has become popular in the structural retrofitting field as an effective way to enhance the strength and ductility of concrete members due to its superior mechanical properties. In this study a method was introduced to study the behavior of concrete columns with and without CFRP jackets under constant axial load and variable lateral load. The lateral load was applied monotonically and cyclically. To predict the behavior of concrete columns under monotonic and cyclic compressive loadings, a computer code was developed to produce the moment-curvature diagram for concrete sections. The moment-curvature diagram was then input in SAP2000 to study the behavior of reinforced concrete columns. The result of this analysis was found to correlate with experimental data well. The behavior of high-strength concrete (HSC) columns having various properties and subjected to a variety of loading conditions has been the topic of considerable investigation. Of particular significance in this area is the behavior of HSC columns under cyclic compressive load with bidirectional eccentricity. For the experimental investigation, tests of six square slender HSC columns were conducted under stroke control to achieve both ascending and descending branches of the load-deformation curves. Analysis of HSC columns subjected to cyclic axial compression with bidirectional eccentricity was approached from the standpoint of a three-dimensional problem. A computer program based on the extended finite segment method and accounting for geometrical nonlinearity has been proposed here to predict the load-deflection curves of HSC columns under cyclical loading. The HSC stress-strain relationship obtained by parametric study and experimental investigation into the behavior of concrete under cyclical load history has been incorporated into the numerical procedure. The presented computer analysis results have been compared with the experimental data, and a satisfactory agreement was attained for both the ascending and descending branches of the load-deformation curves.

Abstract: This thesis presents both experimental and theoretical studies on the structural behaviour of externally confined concrete-filled-steel-tube (CFST) short columns under uni-axial compression. External confinement in the form of tie bars, steel rings, spirals and jackets is proposed. From the study, it can be concluded that the external confinement is highly effective in improving the uni-axial behaviour of CFST columns by improving confining stress and suppressing inelastic local buckling. The first part of the thesis covers the experimental behaviour of concentrically loaded confined CFST columns. The experimental programme involved testing a total of 208 specimens that consisted of 46 hollow-steel-tube columns with or without external confinement and CFST columns: 28 unconfined, 25 tie-confined, 77 ring-confined, 24 spiral-confined and 8 jacket-confined columns. The test results are summarized and discussed. From analysing the obtained experimental results, a better understanding of the structural behaviours, such as steel-concrete interface bonding, stress state of steel tube, behaviour of core concrete of CFST columns can be obtained. Besides, the test results obtained are useful for deriving and verifying theoretical models in this study. In the second part of the thesis, a theoretical stress-strain model is proposed based on the obtained test results. This model is obtained through a four-step procedure. As the first crucial step, a new and accurate hoop strain equation is proposed and verified based on experimental results. Having validated the assumption of stress path independence of the core concrete in CFST columns under monotonic uni-axial compression, an actively confined concrete constitutive model is adopted to predict the axial stress-strain response of the core concrete. Next, with the aid of Generalized Hooke's Law and Prandtl-Reuss theory, the complicated stress-state of steel tube is accurately modelled. Lastly, by using the newly proposed hoop strain equation together with the interaction models among the core concrete, steel tube and external confinement, the uni-axial behaviours of CFST columns can be predicted. The validity of this model is subsequently verified with the author's and published experimental results of CFST columns and FRP-confined concrete. Finally, a parametric study using the proposed model is conducted in this thesis, involving a wide range of parameters, i.e. steel tube yield strength, concrete compressive strength, steel ratio (steel tube outer diameter / thickness) and external confinement (types and arrangements). From the parametric study, two sets of critical steel ratios based on two levels of ductility at different steel yield and concrete compressive strengths are established. Moreover, the maximum column strengths of CFST columns obtained from the model and previous experimental studies are compared with the design strengths calculated using different design codes and the results indicate that the design codes cannot give reasonably accurate predictions. Therefore, new design equations are proposed in this thesis to predict the maximum strength of the CFST columns. Subjects: Concrete-filled tubes

Book excerpt: A comprehensive research project was conducted to investigate the behaviour and design of earthquake resistant normal-strength and high-strength concrete columns. The project included three essential components; testing of full size columns, development of an analytical model, and development of a design procedure. The experimental program consisted of material research and structural testing. The first phase was designed to study mechanical properties of high-strength concrete, which involved testing of a large number of concrete cylinders. The second phase was designed to investigate performance of confined normal and high-strength concrete columns under concentric compression. The experimental program included tests of 46 full size square and circular columns, with concrete strength ranging between 60 MPa and 124 MPa. The parameters considered included; cross-sectional shape (circular and square), volumetric ratio and spacing of transverse reinforcement, distribution of longitudinal reinforcement and resulting tie arrangement, yield strength of transverse reinforcement, concrete compressive strength, influence of longitudinal reinforcement in circular columns, and type of circular reinforcement (continuous spiral and circular hoops). The analytical component of the research program involved development of a mathematical model to represent stress-strain relationship of confined concrete. This was done in two steps. The first step included formulation of the relationship for normal strength concrete, for which extensive test data was available. The second step involved modification of the model for high-strength concrete. An extensive literature survey was first conducted, followed by evaluation of previous test data. This information was used, along with the results of the experimental phase of this investigation to develop a generalized cofinement model for normal-strength and high-strength concrete columns. The analytical and experimental research was used in developing a design procedure for confinement of earthquake resistant concrete columns. The procedure includes all the relevant parameters of confinement that have been observed to be important in column tests, and relates the design variables to deformation capacities. A displacement based design methodology was developed, where the lateral drift demand is a design parameter. This approach leads to different confinement steel requirements for columns with different deformability demands, an approach currently lacking in practice. Furthermore, the reinforcement arrangement is recognized as a design parameter, allowing lower volumetric ratio of confinement reinforcement for efficient arrangements. This may result in significant savings in steel, eliminating the common problem of steel congestion in earthquake resistant columns. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Book excerpt: Development of Ultra-High Performance Concrete against Blasts: From Materials to Structures presents a detailed overview of UHPC development and its related applications in an era of rising terrorism around the world. Chapters present case studies on the novel development of the new generation of UHPC with nano additives. Field blast test results on reinforced concrete columns made with UHPC and UHPC filled double-skin tubes columns are also presented and compiled, as is the residual load-carrying capacities of blast-damaged structural members and the exceptional performance of novel UHPC materials that illustrate its potential in protective structural design. As a notable representative, ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) has now been widely investigated by government agencies and universities. UHPC inherits many positive aspects of ultra-high strength concrete (UHSC) and is equipped with improved ductility as a result of fiber addition. These features make it an ideal construction material for bridge decks, storage halls, thin-wall shell structures, and other infrastructure because of its protective properties against seismic, impact and blast loads. Focuses on the principles behind UHPC production, properties, design and detailing aspects Presents a series of case studies and filed blast tests on columns and slabs Focuses on applications and future developments

Properties of columns were selected to allow assessment of the importance of confinement parameters for high-strength concrete columns. The specimens were tested under constant axial compression and incrementally increasing lateral deformation reversals, simulating seismic action. The data indicate that high-strength concrete columns can be confined to behave in a ductile manner. The volumetric ratio of confinement reinforcement required for high strength concrete columns is higher than that required for normal-strength concrete columns, although the spacing requirement does not appear to be a function of concrete strength. Columns confined with higher grade lateral reinforcement require lower volumetric ratios of confinement steel. The arrangement of lateral reinforcement plays an important role on improving deformability. Columns confined with well-distributed longitudinal reinforcement, laterally supported by transverse reinforcement show improved deformability. The volumetric ratio and spacing limitations for these columns need not be as stringent as those required for less favourable steel arrangements. Axial compression reduces column ductility. An analytical investigation was also conducted to assess the applicability of conventional analyses techniques used for normal-strength concrete columns to those made with high-strength concrete. The applicability of a confinement model, based on test data under concentric compression, was verified against experimental data. The results indicate that the confinement model can be employed to columns under combined bending and axial load. Furthermore, moment-curvature relationships obtained by plane section analysis, moment-rotation and force-displacement relationships obtained by integration of curvatures and consideration of column plastic hinging region, as usually done for columns with normal-strength concrete, produce fairly accurate representation of experimentally observed force-deformation relationships. Book excerpt: Due to significant economic and structural advantages associated with the use of high strength concrete in compression members, the application of high strength concrete in columns and core walls is increasing. The advantages of using high strength concrete are well documented. Utilisation of high strength concrete leads to a reduction in column size. However, this results in an increase in slenderness of columns which would otherwise be stocky when built using low strength concrete. In addition, columns are rarely designed for pure axial load yet most research to date has focussed on high strength colurnns subject to concentric compression. Very limited data is available on columns subject to eccentric compression. The present research therefore focussed on slender columns subject to eccentric compression.

Book excerpt: The use of high-strength concrete for bridges and high-rise buildings become popular due to development in concrete technology and availability of various types of mineral and chemical admixtures. High-strength concrete could lead to smaller member sizes for compression members and therefore provide considerable savings associated with material costs and reduction of dead loads. However, Most of the current design codes, such as AASHTO-LRFD Bridge Specifications, are still based on tests conducted using normal-strength concrete. Many studies indicate that the behavior of columns with high-strength concrete is different from that of normal-strength concrete. The experimental phase of this investigation consists of thirty two rectangular and twenty four circular columns subjected to concentric and eccentric loading conditions to investigate the behavior of high-strength concrete columns. The main variables considered in this study were concrete strength ranging from 7.9 to 16.5 ksi, shape of cross section, and longitudinal and transverse reinforcement ratios. Using the test results of this study and other researches in literature, the dissertation provides design equation to predict the capacity of high-strength concrete columns with tie and spiral reinforcements subjected to concentric and eccentric loading conditions up to 18 ksi. The research also proposes a new stress-strain relationship of high-strength concrete confined with spiral reinforcements.

Book excerpt: The in situ rehabilitation or upgrading of reinforced concrete members using bonded steel plates is an effective, convenient and economic method of improving structural performance. However, disadvantages inherent in the use of steel have stimulated research into the possibility of using fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) materials in its place, providing a non-corrosive, more versatile strengthening system. This book presents a detailed study of the flexural strengthening of reinforced and prestressed concrete members using fibre reinforces polymer composite plates. It is based to a large extent on material developed or provided by the consortium which studied the technology of plate bonding to upgrade structural units using carbon fibre / polymer composite materials. The research and trial tests were undertaken as part of the ROBUST project, one of several ventures in the UK Government's DTI-LINK Structural Composites Programme. The book has been designed for practising structural and civil engineers seeking to understand the principles and design technology of plate bonding, and for final year undergraduate and postgraduate engineers studying the principles of highway and bridge engineering and structural engineering. Detailed study of the flexural strengthening of reinforced and prestressed concrete members using fibre reinforced polymer composites Contains in-depth case histories
