Book excerpt: The horn fly (Diptera: Muscidae) is readily considered the most detrimental ectoparasite affecting rangeland cattle. The economic impacts of this pest, often manifested in decreased weight gains and milk production, have been well documented. The purpose of this study was to evaluate horn fly-induced behavioral modifications expressed by rangeland cattle under an effective horn fly control regime. Naturally-occurring seasonal horn fly populations were controlled using an emulsifiable insecticide labeled for use as a spray on beef cattle containing 10% permethrin. Horn fly populations were estimated using daily visual count of each animal herd used in four experimental trials. Horn fly control between pre- and post-treatment periods was desirable using this regime. Data used for evaluating behavioral modifications following insecticide control were acquired from global posting system (GPS) units fitted to the animal as a collar. The behaviors derived from these GPS data included, distance travelled, minimum convex polygons, vertical and horizontal head movements, as well as visits to, time spent at, and maximum distance from water features. In addition, velocity based categorization of animal activities such as time spent resting, grazing, and walking were evaluated. Despite successful horn fly control between pre- and post-treatment periods, no significant differences were detected for any of the animal behaviors evaluated. However, slight trends were noticed during the nighttime hours between treatment periods.

Book excerpt: The horn fly (Haematobia irritans) has historically been acknowledged as one of the most influential ectoparasites affecting rangeland cattle. As a blood feeding obligatory ectoparasite, the horn fly is often associated with decreased animal performance leading to economic losses for cattle producers. As such, scientific investigations assessing the performance effects of horn fly infested animals have been used to provide producers with recommendations regarding timely and effective interventions. Often referred to as the economic threshold, producers are encouraged to incorporate management efforts once horn fly populations have exceeded a set limit. Despite advances in understanding of both pest and host biology in recent years, recommendations for producers have largely remained unchanged. In order to properly develop truly integrated pest management (IPM) approaches capable of controlling this pest, researchers must understand the biology of both the host and parasite individually as well as how normal processes can be affected under parasitic infestations. The overarching goal of the forthcoming chapters was to expand our understanding of this parasitic relationship to include behavioral and physiological responses of the host that have either been lightly investigated or not yet assessed, as well as determine the practicality of current control recommendations. In general, a novel approach utilizing artificial infestations on individual animals was used to evaluate horn fly population estimates. Differences (P 0.05) were observed between counting methods broadly classified as visual and digital techniques. The implications of inconsistent results from various data collection methods used to estimate horn fly populations are discussed below. Furthermore, field based assessments of animal behavior, growth and reproductive performance of cattle assigned to either an untreated control (UTC) herd or insecticide treated (TRT) herd were made. In general, horn fly infested cows within the UTC herd tended (P = 0.0768) to gain less weight and wean (P = 0.0680) lighter calves than their insecticide treated counterparts. No differences (P 0.05) were observed between treatment groups for postpartum interval lengths or days to pregnancy. Furthermore, animal performance in terms of weight gain could not be explained by horn fly induced behavioral modifications measured through the use of global positioning systems.

(Diptera: Muscidae) are economic blood-sucking pests of cattle. They negatively impact animals' behavior and physiology. Grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae) are major rangeland herbivores in the western U.S. Cattle have to compete against grasshoppers for available rangeland forage while being impacted by horn flies. Current treatments focus on each pest separately. A common treatment for grasshopper control in the U.S. consists in spraying rangeland with an insect growth regulator, diflubenzuron (Dimilin 2L®). A two-year field study was conducted to determine whether a grasshopper control treatment of two (2008) and one (2009) oz of Dimilin 2L® per acre could negatively impact horn fly emergence from pats of cattle fed with diflubenzuron-treated vegetation. To that end, a coprophagous insect trap was designed and applied to capture adult horn flies emerging from cattle's manure. In both years, numbers of horn flies emerged from treated plots were significantly lower than from untreated control plots. To support the findings a study was conducted which demonstrated that detectable amounts of diflubenzuron could be found in manure pats of cattle that fed on forage treated with even a lower dose of diflubenzuron common for grasshopper control of one oz of Dimilin 2L® per acre. A second part of the study aimed at gaining knowledge of vegetation and ground-dwelling arthropods that may be impacted by a grasshopper control treatment with Dimilin 2L® on grazing plots in southeastern Wyoming. Results of the research show that a grasshopper control treatment with Dimilin 2L® causes suppression of horn fly emergence with low impact on other non-target arthropods.
