Six RC slabs with dimensions 2015x2015x150 mm were tested at the Structural Laboratory of the Izmir Institute of Technology. To facilitate a comparison between the static and impact behavior of identical specimens, the slabs were cast in three identical pairs, such that one of the specimens was tested under impact loads whereas its identical twin was tested under static loads. To test the slabs under simply supported conditions, an innovative impact test setup was designed and manufactured, supporting the specimens at 20 locations along the perimeter and holding the specimens in place during the impact induced rebound. This setup was also used for the testing of the specimens under monotonically increasing static loads at the midpoint. Impact loads were induced on the specimens by a free falling drop-weight, impacting the specimens at the midpoint. The specimens were intensely instrumented with 20 load cells at each support location, 24 displacement transducers, 6 accelerometers and 12 strain gauges fixed to the reinforcing bars. Dynamic data was captured with the help of a high speed data acquisition system, capturing and recording the data at a rate of 250 kHz per channel. The results obtained from these tests revealed that the impact behavior of slabs differs significantly compared to their static behavior. Displacement profiles and force distributions are highly affected due to the high inertia forces during the impact.
Book Synopsis Strength and Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Slab-column Connections Subjected to Static and Dynamic Loadings by : Marvin E. Criswell

This book was released on 1970 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this investigation were to study the strength and behavior of slowly (statically) loaded reinforced concrete slab-column connections and to determine the effect of rapid (dynamic) loading on the strength and behavior by comparison with the static test results. Nineteen full-scale models of a connection and adjoining slab area, consisting of a simply supported slab 84 or 94 inches square and 6-1/2 inches thick loaded concentrically on a 10- or 20-inch-square stub column at the center of the slab, were tested. The main variables were the amounts of reinforcement in the slab (p = 0.75 and 1.50 percent), the column size, and the loading speed. Eight specimens were loaded to failure statically, two were subjected to a very rapidly applied load of short duration, and nine were loaded to failure by a rapidly applied load with a rise time chosen to represent the conditions in a blast-loaded structure. The static test results are compared with 12 shear strength prediction methods. Differences between the mechanism of shear failure in slabs and beams are examined. (Author).

This book was released on 2022-05-08 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although much research focuses on investigating the responses of reinforced concrete (RC) structures under sole impact or blast loads, the responses of RC structures under a combination of impact and blast loads currently represent a gap in our knowledge. The combined actions of impact and blast loadings may be applied to RC structures during accidental or intentional collision of vessels, vehicles, etc., carrying explosive materials. A comprehensive study on the vulnerability of various structural members is carried out using finite element (FE) simulations under combination of impact and blast loads with the variations of various loading- and structural-related parameters and key parameters. This book introduces various structural analysis approaches for concrete structures when subjected to extreme loads such as impact and blast loadings. The theory of the combinations of impact and blast loads is proposed that can provide primary insights to the specific readers to develop new ideas in impact and blast engineering, including combined actions of extreme loads arising from real-world intentional or accidental events. This book will be of value to students (undergraduate or postgraduate), engineers, and researchers in structural and civil engineering, and specifically, those who are studying and investigating the performances of concrete structures under extreme loads.

This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Project Report from the year 2015 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, grade: 1.3 (90-100%), Dresden Technical University, language: English, abstract: In the frame of a research program at the TU Dresden, reinforced concrete slabs are tested in a drop-tower. The goal is to obtain a model with which the prediction of the structural behav-ior of the slabs under high loading rates, depending on different parameters. The global behavior response of RC slabs (symmetric reinforcement without shear stirrups) due to a hard impact projectile and a strain rate 10-1 [1/s] has been addressed in this project-work. A complex drop-mass apparatus is used to conduct experiments and investigations on the impact dynamic behavior of RC slabs The focus was on the response stage of the linear elastic field and how to correlate this re-sponse stage to the drop-height depending on raw experimental data. A process of data analysis for hundreds, thousands, or millions of data measurements has been carried out and an analytical model based on a system of single degree of freedom and different simplifications is shown with different verification methods. The model enables predicting bending response due to impact. The test of 11 slabs with drop-heights (1 to 4 meters) provides the required data to calibrate the analytical model as well as future numerical models.

This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many older structures were designed for static loads but more recently there has been a growing awareness that some must be designed to resist both dynamic impact and static loads. An accidental impact load can be caused by mishaps in industry as well as accidents stemming from transportation or man-made disasters. Structural components can be subjected to a range of deliberate impact loads such as military activity or terrorist attacks. A large proportion of the surfaces of concrete structures are covered by reinforced concrete slabs. Slabs are often slender elements, which means they are vulnerable to flexural, shear, or a combination of both modes of failure when subjected to impact loading. There are a number of ways of predicting how an impact load will affect a concrete slab, some of which may be impractical or expensive but because there have been significant developments in technology, numerical techniques rather than experimental approaches have become popular methods for developing detailed responses.

Download or read book Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Slabs Subjected to Combined Punching Shear and Biaxial Tension written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation was a continuing study of peripheral (punching) shear strength of precracked, biaxially tensioned, orthogonally reinforced concrete slabs. This research was motivated by the need to determie the strength of a reinforced concrete containment vessel wall when subjected to combined internal pressure and punching shear loads normal to the wall. The study served to determine the effect of three major variables (shear span, size of loaded area, and reinforcing steel ratio) on punching shear strength of slabs that were precracked in biaxial tension and then held at one of the two tension levels (0 or 0.8f/sub y/) during shear load application.

Book Synopsis Behaviour of Fiber Reinforced Concrete Slabs Under Impact Loading by : M. Huelsewig
Download or read book Behaviour of Fiber Reinforced Concrete Slabs Under Impact Loading written by M. Huelsewig and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The behaviour of steel fiber reinforced concrete slabs under impact loads has been investigated. The results obtained show that fracturing and spallation effects are reduced to a large extent due to high energy absorption and the increased yield strength of this material. Crater depths are comparable to those obtained using normal concrete targets. Systematic tests using different fiber types and dimensions show that the terminal ballistic behaviour is strongly dependent on these parameters. (Author).
