Book excerpt: Lessons learned from earthquakes in the last 50 years have spurred changes in building seismic code requirements, making it necessary to determine the seismic vulnerability of old military structures. This study addresses a popular type of building in high seismic zones that has lateral load-resisting systems constructed from reinforced concrete (R/C) frames with masonry infill panels. An experimental program was carried out to evaluate this structural system. Five single-story half-scale laboratory models with different numbers of bays were constructed. The five models represent: a single-bay bare frame, single-bay with concrete masonry unit (CMU) infill, single-bay with brick infill, double-bay with CMU infill, and triple-bay with brick infill. These models were fully instrumented and tested under lateral in-plane loading to failure. Non-linear finite element analyses were carried out on the experimental models. Load-deflection curves for finite element analysis (FEA) reasonably predicted experimental behavior of specimens in terms of deflection. Ultimate failure load corresponding to each specimen was predicted with accuracy. Finally, a new idealized analytical model was proposed to determine the capacity evaluation of this structural system. Post-yield behavior, residual strength, and the effects of bay multiplicity on structural behavior are also presented.

Book excerpt: This report examines the behaviour of individual frame members subjected to the cyclic actions arising in seismically loaded frames i.e. slender flexure-dominated beams, short columns and beam-column joints. The report also considers global inelastic frame behaviour and its modelling, and the peculiarities of the behaviour of masonry-filled frames.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current practices utilize infill walls as insulation or partition material but not as a structural material. The main reason for this choice is the complexity of the partition wall-frame interaction behavior. Therefore infill walls typically ignored in the structural designs. However, existence of partition walls heavily effect stiffness, strength and behavior of structures. The main purpose of the presented study is the investigation of the dynamic parameters of reinforced concrete frames with and without infill walls. Moreover, lateral strength, stiffness and energy dissipation properties of the frames are also studied. In order to achieve the purpose four planar, one-bay, four story RC frames with 1/5 scale are designed, constructed and tested. In the frames main parameters are selected as presence of partition walls and ductile/non-ductile reinforcement detailing. Experiments are consisted of static and dynamic tests. In static tests each frame subjected to lateral loads that were applied at the each story level to provide a lateral loading increasing with height. Lateral load levels were controlled by the drift levels in the first story. Dynamic tests were performed at the end of each deformation level and modal analysis methods are utilized. Analyses have shown that existence of partition walls in the frame increased the natural frequencies of the frames. However, reinforcement detailing did not have a significant effect on natural frequencies. It is also observed that the natural frequencies of the frames decreased with increasing damage level. On the other hand, presence of partition walls effected the damaged behavior of the frames and drift is observed to concentrate to the first story with the increasing level of damage. And finally stiffness, strength and energy dissipation properties of frames with partition walls are observed to be dramatically higher than the frames without partition walls.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this jOint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 40 (thesis year 1995) a total of 10,746 thesis titles from 19 Canadian and 144 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 40 reports theses submitted in 1995, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Out-of-plane behavior and strength of cracked masonry panels cannot be accurately predicted. This report increases the knowledge and understanding of the behavior observed in masonry panels, and provides tools to estimate their ultimate capacities. An analytical model was developed to predict the out-of-plane behavior and strength of masonry panels with and without previous in-plane damage. The analytical model was based on an arching action theory. Analytical model parameters included the masonry compressive strength, the infill slenderness ratio, and the extent of in-plane damage experienced by the panel prior to the out-of-plane testing. Experimental testing of a series of specimens was done to verify predictions by the analytical model. Horizontal forces were applied (a) parallel to the plane of an infill and (b) normal to the plane of an infill. Specimens consisted of full-scale reinforced concrete frames with clay brick or concrete block masonry infills. Test specimens were first loaded statically in the in-plane direction up to an arbitrary relative deflection which produced a shear-cracked infill. Specimens were then loaded monotonically with uniform pressures normal to their plane using an air bag. After loading to failure, specimens were repaired and retested. Based on the analytical model and on the supporting experimental results, this research resulted in the development of a seismic evaluation and rehabilitation procedure for unreinforced masonry infill panels loaded normal to their plane.

Book excerpt: Masonry-infilled reinforced concrete (RC) frames constitute a significant part of the building inventory in earthquake-prone regions around the world. The development of accurate analysis tools and of retrofit techniques is important for enhancing the seismic safety of older construction of this type. Most of the existing analytical approaches have either adopted simplified models with limited predictive capabilities or been restricted to the monotonic loading regime. Additionally, many of the retrofit methods used in practice have not been experimentally validated. The present study aimed to establish and use refined computational tools for the reliable and robust analysis of masonry-infilled RC frames with and without retrofit, and to experimentally validate recently developed retrofit schemes. Constitutive models have been developed to allow the analysis of infilled frames. An existing smeared-crack model has been enhanced to accurately describe diffuse cracking and crushing in concrete and masonry under cyclic loading. Furthermore, a novel cohesive interface model has been formulated to describe strongly localized cracks in the concrete columns and the behavior of the mortar joints. The model can account for various aspects of the cyclic behavior, such as the cyclic normal unloading/reloading response, the frictional sliding and geometric dilatation and the irreversible crushing under large compressive stresses. A major challenge was the formulation of a robust stress update algorithm, which is also presented. The models are validated with experimental tests at the material and at the structural level. The analyses demonstrate the capability of the models to accurately capture the response of infilled frames. The results of large-scale, shake-table tests on a masonry-infilled RC frame are also presented. The purpose of the tests was to evaluate two retrofit methods for infills, using overlays of Engineered Cementitious Composite material (ECC) and of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP). The material properties, specimen configuration, input ground motions and experimental observations are described in detail. Both retrofit techniques improved the performance of the specimen. A series of nonlinear analyses has been conducted to provide further insight on the behavior of the retrofitted specimen. Dynamic analyses have been conducted for infilled RC frames subjected to a collection of eight ground motions, scaled to match a target intensity level. The results of the analyses indicate that the addition of an ECC overlay can significantly improve the performance of an infilled frame.
