Book excerpt: Excerpt from Behavior of Cotton Planted at Different Dates in Weevil-Control Experiments in Texas and South Carolina The United States San Antonio Field Station is located about-5 miles south of the city. The soil on the farm is typical of a large part of the cultivated land in that region and is technically described as Houston clay loam. It is of high natural fertility and is fairly retentive of moisture. The subsoil is a coarse gravel, which affords good drainage but limits the water-storage capacity of the soil. The annual precipitation is variable, ranging from 13 to nearly 40 inches. The average annual rainfall over a period of 15 years is about 26 inches. Although the precipitation is usually sufficient for cotton production, the distribution is very irregular. Periods of excessive rainfall are frequently followed by protracted periods of hot dry weather which deplete the soil moisture and cause serious injury to crops. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Relation of the Arizona Wild Cotton Weevil to Cotton Planting in the Arid West During the summer and fall of 1913 the writer experimented with the Arizona wild cotton weevil and the Texas cotton-weevil at Vic toria, Tex, crossbreeding them and testing the adaptation Of the Arizona form to conditions of cultivated cotton in the South. In April, 1914, the work was transferred to a ranch near Tucson, Ariz., and was continued until the middle of November. This bulletin is a partial result of these studies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boll-Weevil Cotton in Texas Some of the solitary bracts representing reduced involucres, are not of the usual expanded form, but narrowly tubular or trumpet shaped. (pl. III, Fig. To form these tubular bracts the margins must have been united or fused together at a very early stage of development, while the abortion of the other bracts and of the flower bud must have taken place at a still earlier stage in the for mation of the involucre. The tubular bracts may be described as ascidia, a name that has been applied to similar malformations of leaves in several other families of plants. The marginal teeth of the solitary bracts are reduced in number, especially those of the tubular bracts, or ascidia. Having lost their floral buds at the early stage of development the reduced involucres can serve only as leaves, and they persist for the remainder of the season, as already stated. The stalks or pedicels of the reduced involucres are very short and slender, more like petioles of small leaves than like pedi cels of normal buds or bolls. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proliferation as a Factor in the Natural Control of the Mexican Cotton Boll Weevil As the significance of these observations came to be more fully appreciated it was believed that they contained at least a suggestion as to some very promising lines of work in the problem of controlling the weevil. Accordingly, it has been necessary to study carefully the nature of the phenomenon, conditions of climate, soil, fertilizer, and variety of cotton which affected the occurrence of proliferation. Observations have, therefore, been made upon quite a large number of varieties and in locations ranging from Victoria to Dallas, Tex., upon various types of soil, and in connection with various experiments with fertilizers and different conditions of cultivation. From a comparison of the results thus obtained it was hoped that some factors might be found which could be used practically in increasing proliferation, and thus rendering it more effective as a factor in controlling the weevil. In many cases the results of the work have been quite different from those anticipated, but enough has been learned to justify the assertion that at present proliferation is a more important factor in retarding the multiplication of the weevil than are the parasites which have thus far been found. Large numbers of squares and bolls have been carefully examined in obtaining these records. In the examination of bolls, the lock has been made the unit rather than the boll. As a general rule, a larva confines its injury almost, if not entirely, to the lock within which the egg was originally placed. Quite frequently two or more larvae occur within a look, but even in such cases the injury does not often extend through the septum or partition which separates the locks. In making a comparison of varieties considerable care is required in subdividing the classes of observations in order to render the infin ential conditions sufficiently uniform to make the observations fairly comparable and wherever possible to reduce the fundamental causes or stimuli producing variations in the proliferation to one essential factor. While the phenomenon in bolls is of a similar nature to that in squares, conditions in these two cases are so different that the results are not strictly comparable, and therefore separate tables have been made for squares and bolls. The effects of feeding and egg punctures also call for separate classification. This treatment of the subject necessarily multiplies the number of tables, but we hope that it will render the results more easily intelligible. The personal equation of the observer has been equalized by combining the records made by a number of investigators. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton Insect Conditions: June 22, 1951 The bell weevil has now taken its usual high rank as a pest of cotton. Rains during June brought the weevils out of hibernation in many areas. Heavy weevil populations now occur in thousands of fields in many counties in all states from central Texas to the Atlantic Coast. A new generation of weevils is developing in southern Georgia and in Florida and the other Gulf states. Weevils have made their appearance in Virginia and in many counties in North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, and in some of the northern and western counties of Oklahoma. Although it 18 not likely that the bell weevil populations will become as high in a dozen states as they were in 1950, this could happen in all the boll weevil states if weather conditions during the next 6 weeks are especially favorable for the weevils. 'where rains and humid conditions prevail, the weevils will increase rapidly, but it is hoped they will be checked in many areas by hot, dry weather. Cotton growers who had to contend with heavy boll weevil populations during 1949 or 1950 should be prepared to fight the weevils during July and August. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton Boll Weevil Control by the Use of Poison The best way to make sure of having the proper grade of calcium arsenate is to send a sample to the Delta Laboratory at Tallulah, La., for free analysis. This analytical service was started by the United States Department of Agriculture last season and if possible will be continued until the quality of calcium arsenate on the market becomes more uniform. Every cotton planter who purchases calcium arsenate for this work is invited to send in samples and he will be given an immediate report as to whether or not the material is satisfactory for use in cotton dusting. For this purpose it is advisable to take at least two or three samples from as many different packages. Prob ably the best plan is to sample 1 package in every 10 purchased. Half-pound samples should be taken from each and packed separ ately. The complete record of each sample should be packed with that sample, giving its full history, including name of manufacturer, when purchased, size and type of package, condition of material, analysis claimed by manufacturer, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Relation of Drought to Weevil Resistance in Cotton In order to take full advantage Of other measures for combating the weevils, the relation of drought to the behavior of the growing plants must be considered, no less than the direct effect of the drought upon the weevils. Questions of the value of early and late varieties and. Of early and late planting require to be reconsidered and given further study now that the effects of dry weather are more fully appreciated. It is only by a careful study and full recognition of all the factors that the true possibilities of cotton culture in the presence of the weevils can be realized. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collection of Weevils and Infested Squares as a Means of Control of the Cotton-Boll Weevil in the Mississippi Delta The investigations of 1916 were conducted under seasonal and climatic conditions differing considerably from those of 1915 and were more extensive, so that it seems that the combined results of the two seasons' investigations may be considered as more or less conclusive. The following report presents a rather brief summary of these experiments, together with the conclusions which seem warranted by the observations.
