Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginnings of Maryland, 1631 1639 The twenty-fifth of March is the day on which the first colonists sent out by Lord Baltimore landed on the soil of Maryland. In 1903, that day was celebrated throughout the schools of the State as Maryland Day, and the establishment of that custom seems to make a re statdment of the beginnings of the settlement of the Province, a task worthy of accomplishment. The at tempt is here made to trace these beginnings, with the same minute care with which the citizens of Massachusetts have traced the beginnings of their Commonwealth. NO one has attempted to do this in an elaborate fashion, since the publication of the Archives of Maryland has unlocked the treasures of our [early records. A careful study of these printed records yields many new details, and ad ditional facts of interest, with reference to the Kent Island Colony, are found in the manuscript records of the English Court of Admiralty. Book Synopsis Maryland Under the Commonwealth by : Bernard Christian Steiner
Download or read book Maryland Under the Commonwealth written by Bernard Christian Steiner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maryland Under the Commonwealth: A Chronicle of the Years 1649-1658 The study here presented differs from the historical mono graphs usually published in this series, in that, instead of the development of a single theme in Maryland history, it offers a chronological view of a short period. The object is to present in as complete a manner as possible the facts on record relating to the years 1649 to 1658. This period has not been studied in detail since the publication of the corresponding volumes of the Maryland Archives, the Cal vert Papers, and the Maryland Historical Magazine. The paper will, therefore, serve as a compendious record of estab lished testimony. Appended is a summary of cases decided and matters considered in the Provincial Court. The nature of the controversies, the mixture of trivial and serious con cerns which came before the chief judicial tribunal, throw light upon the occupations and welfare of the colony. Similar accounts of earlier periods of Maryland history have been published in these Studies as follows: Beginnings of Maryland, 1631 - 1639, Series XXI, Nos. 8 - 10; Maryland during the English Civil Wars, Part I, Series XXIV, Nos. 11 - 12; Part II, Series XXV, Nos. 4 - 5. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers’ Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country’s shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state’s unique flavor. The WPA Guide to Maryland has some of the most thorough driving tours in the series. From the Allegheny Plateau to the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Coast, the guide details Maryland’s diverse geography. The essays on the state’s two major cities—Baltimore and Annapolis—are especially engaging. Known as the Old Line State for its pivotal role in the American Revolution, Maryland’s rich history is also extensively detailed in the guide.
