Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginning German: A Series of Lessons With an Abstract of Grammar On the lessons and the best way of using them, I have only a few suggestions to make, and these I will venture to put in a somewhat categorical form. First, have your students recite as much as possible with their books closed. Secondly, dictate a few sentences or phrases to them at every lesson. Thirdly, postpone sentence writing and ao-called composition until the ear is fairly well trained and the new language has become alive in the stu dent's mind. And fourthly, before your scholars do an Eng lish exercise, let them carefully reread the preceding German sentences that should serve them as models. I may add that these suggestions are neither original nor novel, and I dare say that if they had been followed more closely since the Committee of Twelve lent them the weight of their authority, fewer candidates for admission to college would be found deficient in the translation into German, and most would do better in the translation of German into En g lish. The fact is that, notwithstanding all our conceits to the contrary, we are still too much under the sway of the traditional methods of teaching the dead languages. Difficulties arise from the necessity of learning two vocabularies, as well as from the lack of correlation between the stories and the grammar. In this book the commonest words of the reading form the vocabulary of the exercises, thus allowing more time for grammar work. The stories were written expressly for this purpose and give the pupil at the outset familiar and usable words. These are mainly cognates, so that the reading may begin as soon as the German letters have been learned. The book includes seventy-two lessons, of which every fifth one is a review. In addition to this, Lessons XXXVII-XL review the first half, and Lessons LXV-LXXII the whole book, taking up at the same time the irregular verbs. These last eight lessons form an excellent summary with which to begin the second year. Special attention is invited to the way in which the grammar is developed. After the first essentials are finished, each important topic is treated in a group of five lessons, making the book particularly systematic and thorough. Modals are introduced early, as they are vital. The treatment of the Dependent Order is put off till the relative pronoun occurs, and then the first half of the book is reviewed with the Dependent Order, making that the one new subject in Lessons XXXVII-XL. The Subjunctive is brought in earlier than in most books, to allow more time for practice. The plan of each lesson is simple. The memory gems or idioms are to be learned by heart. To make a high school class study the whole of German grammar in less than a year is a crime; and two years are very much better than one year. The following arrangement of time and work has been found very effective for the average class and the average chapter of grammar (some of the more difficult chapters will require a slower pace) monday: Review of last week's work. The teacher explains (as far as possible, in German) a new text and assigns it for reading (with the help of the Special Vocabularies and Notes). Tuesday: The text is read in class; fluent reading is insisted upon. German questions, similar to those in Part II, are answered in German, with the books open; new grammatical features are explained (in English, when necessary). Assignment: Practise the text and read the corresponding Lesson practising a text means reading and re-reading it aloud, until the student is able to answer the German questions in Part II by heart. Wednesday: German questions (not necessarily those in Part II, but of a similar nature) are answered in Ger man with the books closed. The new grammatical mate rial is practised (declensions and conjugations with the help of whole sentences rather than detached paradigms). Assignment: Prepare Drill in Part II; write German answers to a selected number of the Questions. Thursday: The Drill work is practised (partly by writing on the blackboard); practice, as on the preced ing day, is repeated.
