Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Lessons on Banjo is an ultra-easy instruction manual for beginning five-string banjo played in the three finger style in G tuning. It can be used by those with no previous experience with the banjo or music of any sort. It is so basic it can be used even by small children. the book features very detailed descriptions of even the most basic aspects such as wearing the picks properly, the correct picking motion, and noting the strings properly. These are aspects that are so basic most manuals skip over them. There are many detailed photos, several from the player's point of view, not from in front of the banjo. First Lessons on Banjo covers the most basic rolls, the Alternating Thumb Roll and two Forward Rolls, plus the three basic chords plus the relative minor chord. All musical examples are presented in tablature, with the melody notes in boldface type so the student knows which notes to emphasize. All arrangements include lyrics, which is very important to the novice who is trying to train the ear to hear the melody among the fill notes. Several tips and suggestions about the proper mental approach are included that will lead to playing by ear and arranging at an earlier stage in the student's development. There are also suggestions about developing the proper mental approach and about speed reading of tablature. These suggestions are not found in any other banjo instruction book. the 'finale' arrangement is Cripple Creek, a popular banjo standard that when mastered, should give the novice a great sense of accomplishment. the accompanying recording includes all tabbed examples, with the rhythm instruments and lead banjo in separate channels. the songs are played at three tempos, the first tempo VERY slow, then a medium tempo version, and finally at performing speed with guitar, mandolin and bass accompaniment. the up- tempo accompanied versions are all together at the end of the recording so it the final tracks be used as a listening recording. This also allows the student to play along with all the more interesting arrangements in sequence without skipping around the recording.

Book excerpt: New Techniques for 5-String Banjo Volume 1 Beginner is a comprehensive beginning banjo instruction book that covers everything from setting up the instrument to learning all the fundamentals of playing bluegrass banjo. Most importantly, it offers step-by-step exercises to emphasize the function of both the picking and fretting hands through the use of simplified tablature. Included are topics on how to play chords, basic banjo rolls and accompaniment, commonly-used banjo "licks," hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides, the picking technique known as "rocking," and a sneak peek at how to improvise. The book approaches melodies in their most basic form and then describes how to embellish those melodies. The end result is that you'll be playing more efficiently and musically. Exercises are featured throughout that teach and improve picking skills, including new and unique techniques to overcome a common early problem of getting the right finger to pick the right string. Other easy exercises created by the author are as enjoyable to play as actual songs! Also included are a variety of well-known songs in several different time signatures, from straight-ahead driving banjo instrumentals to Irish jigs to waltzes. Typical trouble spots in a tune are pointed out with specific exercises to get you through those difficult sections. "The 8X Pages" teach you the value of repetitive practice and what dedicated musicians call "woodshedding." There is even a "Final Exam" to test your knowledge and skills! A free 5 hour audio companion is available at www.musicalongtheway.com, and includes all the exercises at different speeds. The audio tracks start off with a "Primer" section that is specifically prepared for those who have never played a musical instrument. It contains a tuning track and a very methodical description of how to read the tablature. Whether you are already an instrumentalist looking into banjo as a second instrument or someone who has never played music in your life, this book is for YOU!

Uptain has created a book that starts you out playing an easy to learn style of banjo called "up-picking". Up-Picking is a great melodic/chordal style of playing that incorporates a strum and a plucky 5th string which makes for a great solo style, as well as a great accompaniment. In teaching this style in her classes, Anna has found that most beginners have success with up-picking and it also makes for an easy transition to the three finger style of banjo playing. In this book you will learn how to read and play tablature, chords, hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides. All are incorporated into many favorite old time, traditional songs.
