Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Queens of England Before the Norman Conquest Such are a few of the leading features of a period comparatively unknown, and which cannot fail, it is hoped, to prove a useful study to those who desire an introduction to the History of Eng land; for these personal records of the wives and daughters of our early monarchs, form naturally the connecting links between many public events which would otherwise remain detached and unintelligible. The history of British female Sovereigns before the period of the Conquest had necessarily to be drawn from chronicles which present many legendary records, and which grave writers have sometimes rejected, perhaps too unsparingly; for, as a learned translatorAbout the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. D. 1066 HE main purpose of this short preface is to express my deep Obligation to many friends who have given me their assistance in revising and correcting Various parts of this volume. Three must be specially named. Mr. T. Rice Holmes, the author of Caesar's Conquest of Gaul, and of Ancient Britain and Caesar's Invasions, was good enough to look through the first four chapters, forming the prehistoric and early Celtic section, to make most valuable criticisms thereon, and to give me many fruitful suggestions. This part of my volume, indeed, may be said to be founded in a large measure on his researches, for his two books above mentioned were invaluable to me. Book excerpt: Seventh-century Gaelic law-tracts delineate professional poets (filid) who earned high social status through formal training. These poets cooperated with the Church to create an innovative bilingual intellectual culture in Old Gaelic and Latin. Bede described Anglo-Saxon students who availed themselves of free education in Ireland at this culturally dynamic time. Gaelic scholars called sapientes (“wise ones”) produced texts in Old Gaelic and Latin that demonstrate how Anglo-Saxon students were influenced by contact with Gaelic ecclesiastical and secular scholarship. Seventh-century Northumbria was ruled for over 50 years by Gaelic-speaking kings who could access Gaelic traditions. Gaelic literary traditions provide the closest analogues for Bede’s description of Cædmon’s production of Old English poetry. This ground-breaking study displays the transformations created by the growth of vernacular literatures and bilingual intellectual cultures. Gaelic missionaries and educational opportunities helped shape the Northumbrian “Golden Age”, its manuscripts, hagiography, and writings of Aldhelm and Bede.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Winning the Southwest: A Story of Conquest The political and social forces of the region lying west of the Mississippi have not yet been measured. Only as the American nation continues to grow do these forces assert their vital importance in shaping the destiny of this Republic. And who can gainsay the might of the Southwest as a vitally integral part of our national domain? Hence a story of the acquisition of this great section, the Southwest, seems worth while. The expansion of empire is always fraught with romance. No literature of any race can surpass in human interest the story of the advance of the Anglo-Saxon across this continent. It is with the acquirement of that great area called the Southwest that this little book briefly deals. No attempt has been made to give an exhaustive, sequential account of this conquest. Adequately to produce such a work would require volumes of space. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
