Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A richly imagined portrait of an immigrant woman in the heady and unpredictable first half of the twentieth century. Sweeping and panoramic, You Were There Before My Eyes is the epic and intimate story of a young woman who chafes at the stifling routine and tradition of her small, turn-of-the-century Italian village. When an opportunity presents itself for her to emigrate to America, her hunger for escape compels her to leave everything behind for the gleaming promises that await her and her young husband in Mr. Ford’s factories. Determined to survive, and perhaps even thrive, young Jane finds herself navigating not just a new language and country, but a world poised upon the edge of economic and social revolution—and war. As Jane searches for inner fulfillment while building young family, the tide of history ebbs and flows. From the chaos of Ellis Island to the melting pot of industrial Detroit, You Were There Before My Eyes spills over with colorful characters and vivid period details. Maria Riva paints an authentic portrait of immigrant America and poignantly captures the ever evolving nature of the American dream.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book by Malcolm Parkes makes a fundamental contribution to the history of handwriting. Handwriting is a versatile medium that has always allowed individual scribes the opportunity for self-expression, despite the limitations of the pen and the finite number of possible movements. The purpose of this study is to focus on the writing of scribes from late antiquity to the beginning of the sixteenth century, and to identify those features which are a scribe's personal contribution to the techniques and art of handwriting. The book opens with three chapters surveying the various environments in which scribes worked in the medieval West. The following five, based on the author's Lyell Lectures at the University of Oxford, then examine different aspects of the subject, starting with the basic processes of handwriting and copying. Next come discussions of developments in rapid handwriting, with its consequent influence on new alphabets; on more formal 'set hands'; and on the adaptation of movements of the pen to produce elements of style corresponding to changes in the prevailing sense of decorum. The final chapter looks at the significance of some customized images produced by handwriting on the page. The text is illustrated with 69 plates, and accompanied by a glossary of the technical terms applied to handwriting, which in itself makes a significant contribution to the subject.

Book excerpt: Visual, auditory, tactile--ever attentive to perception--Lawrence Joseph's third book of poems, Before Our Eyes, generously, almost exotically, blends various tones, atmospheres, and textures into forms of concentrated, pitch-perfect invention. The poet, an astute aesthetician, is also astutely conscious of history, a critical observer of public life. He explores the American identity. He investigates meaning and language. He celebrates the mysteries of beauty and love. The result is a poetry of illuminating effects which captures a profound sense of what it's like to be alive, and what it means to write poetry, in a radically changing time.

Book excerpt: A “hauntingly original” psychological thriller about innocence, memory, and the effect of a moment of violence (O: The Oprah Magazine). In the girls’ bathroom, Diana and her best friend, Maureen, are stealing a moment from the routine drudgery of high school when a classmate enters holding a gun. Suddenly, Diana sees her life—past, present, and acutely imagined future—dance before her eyes. Through prose infused with the dramatically feminine sensuality of spring, readers will experience sixteen-year-old Diana’s uncertain steps into womanhood—her awkward, heated forays into sex; her fresh, fragile construction of an identity—and, in exhilarating detail, her life-not-lived as a doting mother and wife of forty. Together with the sights and sounds of renewal are the tasks of Diana’s adulthood: protecting her beloved daughter and holding on to her successful husband. This “poetic” novel encompasses both the truth of a teenager’s world and the transformations of midlife (Vanity Fair). Resonant and deeply stirring, The Life Before Her Eyes finds piercing beauty in the midst of a nightmare that echoes like a dirge beneath each new spring, in a story that “takes on deep matters of life and death; conscience and consciousness; family, love and friendship” (Los Angeles Times). “Evokes terror and redemption, shadows and light. Kasischke treads a delicate line with the precision and confidence of a tightrope walker. She reminds us to look hard at life, to notice its beauty and cruelty, even as it flashes before us and disappears.” —The New York Times “Mesmerizing.” —Chicago Tribune

Book excerpt: Have we ever really believed in gender? Is there any evidence that we have resisted, rejected, and denied the division of human beings into 'male' and 'female'? Both our charter narratives and popular media murmur a persistent «no». The theories of Luce Irigaray, Mikhail Bakhtin, and Roland Barthes, when applied to works as varied as Bible stories, parables, nursery rhymes, Greek myths and drama, Shakespeare's plays, and contemporary film reveal a new character - the transcengenderist mucosa. The transcengenderist mucosa - an original metaphor derived from our own deep physical structures: our permeable cellular membranes - deconstructs the equilibrium of binary gender transcends 'male' and 'female' by being, simultaneously, both and neither. Through the agency of the transcengenderist mucosa, who operates in the liminal space between male and female, we recognize that 'gender' does not exist in reality, and that the violence and destruction inherent in the binary definition of gender can be transcended.

Book excerpt: Have you ever been at a place where you needed to sense God's love and encouragement afresh, or known someone who needed to be reminded of God's love and encouragement? Maybe you've even thought, "If only I had something I could share with them to encourage them." A Miracle before Our Eyes is the journey of a pastor's wife as God teaches her to trust Him deeply following discovery of a brain tumor. A Miracle before Our Eyes takes place with a mother robin choosing my kitchen windowsill to hatch and nurture three different "robin families." As I watched the mother and father robin care for their chicks, I was amazed at how their actions illustrated God's love to me. God's love is unending. His love never fails. God's love is unselfish. His love is for everyone. God's love is unconditional. It is a free gift and not dependent on what we do. You may have a situation in your life-job loss, teenage rebellion, marriage unrest, parents who are ill or aging, single parenthood, or medical concerns that fill your life with dread. God could be using your situation to draw you closer to understanding His love. As you sit back and enjoy A Miracle before Our Eyes, you may be encouraged ... and you just might find a tool to help you encourage a friend.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life-altering experiences of the American soldiers who liberated three Nazi concentration camps. On April 4, 1945, United States Army units from the 89th Infantry Division and the 4th Armored Division seized Ohrdruf, the first of many Nazi concentration camps to be liberated in Germany. In the weeks that followed, as more camps were discovered, thousands of soldiers came face to face with the monstrous reality of Hitler’s Germany. These men discovered the very depths of human-imposed cruelty and depravity: railroad cars stacked with emaciated, lifeless bodies; ovens full of incinerated human remains; warehouses filled with stolen shoes, clothes, luggage, and even eyeglasses; prison yards littered with implements of torture and dead bodies; and—perhaps most disturbing of all—the half-dead survivors of the camps. For the American soldiers of all ranks who witnessed such powerful evidence of Nazi crimes, the experience was life altering. Almost all were haunted for the rest of their lives by what they had seen, horrified that humans from ostensibly civilized societies were capable of such crimes. Military historian John C. McManus sheds new light on this often-overlooked aspect of the Holocaust. Drawing on a rich blend of archival sources and thousands of firsthand accounts—including unit journals, interviews, oral histories, memoirs, diaries, letters, and published recollections—Hell Before Their Very Eyes focuses on the experiences of the soldiers who liberated Ohrdruf, Buchenwald, and Dachau and their determination to bear witness to this horrific history.
