Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Beethoven Although on appearing for the first time as the editor of a literary publication, my feelings may be somewhat like those of a child putting on a new dress, yet I feel the responsibility of my position far more than its novelty; for the subject of my first essay is one not to be approached by me, at least, without seriousness and reverence. That the amount, however, of this editorial responsibility may be thought neither greater nor less than it really is, I must beg leave to state my precise share in this publication, and to advert to the qualifications with which I have entered on my task. It is clear that no picture of him is complete without the music which he breathed forth and sang in his paroxysms, I have attempted to draw it, but only in its outline, only in the course of its development. Perhaps I have succeeded now and again in following the traces of the highest possession of mankind in detail; but that would need a book for itself, and the present book has another object, moreover, apart from the fact that more has already been done in the way of musical analysis than of biography, such was not part of the plan of my book and would have overburdened it. Even the brute creation is not insensible to its power. Yet, at its best, music is a haughty, exclusive being, and not without reason are training, practice, talent, and the development of that talent, required for the understanding of her secrets. One wishes to be heard with the intellect, by one's equals emotion becomes only women, but music should strike fire from the mind of a man. In some such strain as this, Beethoven himself once spoke, and we know how slowly the works of the great symphonist found a hearing and recognition from the general public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beethoven: A Memoir The year I 749 brought us Goethe; 1756, Mozart; 1759, Schiller; and 1770, Beethoven. Thus, within the short Space of twenty-one years four of the greatest poetic geniuses were born - four men of whom not only the German Fatherland, but all mankind must be proud. And even more happy than proud, since the most splendid gift which the Divine Being from time to time vouchsafes to poor humanity is that of genius. Through it we receive the highest good in which we are capable of participating - the forgetfulness of self in a nobler life. Genius it is that gives us, if but for a few short hours, that which the believer awaits with earnest hope in another and a better world. To understand and appreciate him is reserved to the comparatively small community which has a perfect knowledge of German, for no translation can do him justice. And those who do not know any of his works lack the interest which would prompt them to enquire into the great poet's life, thought, work, and influence. Yet Goethe, the Olympian, as he is often called, was one of the greatest figures in literature which the world has known. He ranks with Homer, Virgil, Dante, and Shakespeare. Like these he belongs to the world rather than to a particular nation or race. He is, in literature, what Michelangelo and Raphael in the realm of art, a sovereign master. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Symphony Since Beethoven IF in wandering through some Alpine valley, while we were standing awestruck before a colossal mountain, whose snow - crowned peak rose shim mering in the distance, and we were perhaps deem ing that man happy whose courage and strength were great enough to carry him over this peak to enjoy the view beyond, when suddenly our medi tations were interrupted by a voice at our side saying in all seriousness, I am going to climb over that mountain into the blue clouds beyond, we would have little doubt but that we were con fronted either by a foolhardy dreamer or a mad man. We would scarcely ridicule the man, but rather look upon his simple faith with eyes of pity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beethoven: A Character Study; Together With Wagner's Indebtedness to Beethoven Like Thoreau, Beethoven came on the world's stage just in the nick of time, and almost immediately had to begin hewing out a path for himself. He was born in the workshop, as was Mozart, and learned music simultaneously with speaking. Stirring times they were in which he first saw the light, and so indeed continued with ever-increasing intensity, like a good drama, until nearly his end. The American Revolution became an accomplished fact during his boyhood. Nearer home, events were fast coming to a focus, which culminated in the French Revolution. The magic words, Liberty, Equality, Fraternity, and the ideas for which they stood, were everywhere in the minds of the people. The age called for enlightenment, spiritual growth. On reaching manhood, he found a world in transition; he realized that he was on the threshold of a new order of things, and with ready prescience took advantage of such as could be utilized in his art. Through Beethoven the resources of the orchestra were increased, an added range was given the keyboard of the piano, the human voice was given tasks that at the time seemed impossible of achievement. He established the precedent, which Wagner acted on later, of employing the human voice as a tool, an instrument, to be used in the exigencies of his art, as if it were a part of the orchestra. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beethoven and His Nine Symphonies Tms book is addressed to the amateurs of this country, who have so immensely increased during the last fifty years with the increase of good and cheap p'erformances - a movement headed by the Crystal Palace, under the wise and able direction of Mr. Manns. In short, it is a humble endeavour to convey to others the method in which an amateur has obtained much pleasure and profit out of works which in their own line are as great as Shakespeare's plays. It would be presumptuous in me to, attempt to interest professional musicians, who naturally know already all that I have been able to put together, and much more; and in a more complete and accurate manner. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Performance of Beethoven's Symphonies The secret of the artistic rendering of musical compositions, and hence the secret of the conductor's art, lies in the style. The reproducing artist, in this case the conductor, must have absorbed into himself, so to speak, the peculiarity of each master and each masterpiece, and his rendering must be subordinate to this peculiarity even in the smallest details. As regards the time, the phrasing, the treatment of the sounds in the orchestra and even the technical manipulation, the conductor must assume a different personality according as he is conducting the Eroica or the Pastorale, Tristan or the Meistersinger, according as he is trying to reproduce Haydn or Beethoven, Berlioz or Wagner. I believe I am not going too far when I say that a conductor of genius unites in himself just as many personalities as he reproduces masterpieces. One of the essential conditions of the style of an execution must be clearness, and this is the quality which will occupy us here with regard to Beethoven's Symphonies. This, is precisely the point in which these greatest of all orchestral compositions offer the greatest difficulty, for even a perfectly correct rendering does not always make the intentions of the master as clear as they become by the reading of the score, or even by the playing of the pianoforte extracts. Indeed it must be confessed that many passages awaken a feeling of confusion rather than of pleasure. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
