Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beekeeping in Wisconsin Beekeeping returns the largest profit the amount of money and labor invested, of any agricultural pursuit Sometimes the return is as high as five dollars an hour for the time spent with the bees. A thorough knowledge of bees and honey production, however, is necessary before the most profitable results are possible. Fruits and berries, besides many grasses and flowers, depend on the busy bee to distribute the pollen. A few bees kept near an orchard will not only prove profitable as producers of honey, but will also increase the profits of the orchard. Soil and climate influence beekeeping. The length of the growing season often has an important bearing upon the number of kinds of plants producing nectar. On certain types of soil the best nectar producing plants do not thrive. A constant supply of nectar from the honey plants is needed by the bees. If during a part of the summer season the bees cannot collect nectar, the profits are certain to be lowered. The Italian bees are to be preferred as honey makers. Carnolian, Caucassian, and the common black German bees are other races which are not as desirable. Of the two varieties of Italian bees, the leather colored are generally preferred to the five banded or Golden Italians. To winter bees successfully is one of the essentials in beekeeping. Four essentials, sufficient and proper food supply, young fertile queens, plenty of young workers, and ample protection must be supplied. The amount of winter loss depends upon the amount of care taken by the beekeeper. A bee cellar, which is dry, dark, warm, and well ventilated will help keep the bees through the winter without loss, providing the colonies are properly prepared for wintering. There are several bee diseases known in Wisconsin. Paralysis, and sacbrood or pickled brood cause but slight damage. The American and European foul brood are the diseases which are of consequence. Proper care and management will greatly reduce the losses from disease. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Hall, Colo, Story County: After trying every plan have decided that for Iowa conditions cellar wintering is best. Of equal numbers wintered in cellar and packed outside losses have been several times greater in outdoor wintered colonies. (sioux County). In Story county lost only one colony in 356 wintered in the cellar. In one cel lar which was too warm losses were heavier. When bees are in right condition they will winter in almost any hole in the ground. No ap parent differences in results whether t0ps and bottoms are left on, or removed. W. S. Pangburn, Center Junction, Jones County: A seven-eighth inch entrance is used winter and summer. The bees are tiered up five high in cellar with front of hive one inch lower than back. The door is frequently opened at night to let in fresh air. Temperature is not so important as proper ventilation and a dry cellar. The results of win tering are frequently perfect, but have had some losses when honey dew was mixed with the stores. Spring dwindling is caused by putting the bees out too early. Plenty of stores for early brood rear ing are important. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. And equally, to those who will make the old bee-man's acquaintance for the first time in these present pages, little need be said. In spite of the War, the honey-bee remains the same mysterious, fascinating creature that she has ever been; and the men who live by the fruit of her toil share with her the like changeless quality. The Master of Warrilow and his bees can very well be left to win their own way into the hearts of new. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Townsend Bee Book: Or How to Make a Start in Bees In beekeeping, as in all pursuits, there are always many people just starting in the business, and one of the oft recurring questions that are asked has been, "How can I make a start with bees?" To answer this question properly we engaged Mr. E. D. Townsend, one of the best authorities in bee culture, and who produces honey by the carload, to write a special series of articles having to do primarily with the problems that beset every person who starts this most fascinating of nature studies. These duly appeared in our journal, Gleanings In Bee Culture. As they were received with such wide-spread enthusiasm, we decided to incorporate them in book form. Mr. Townsend is peculiarly fitted for giving instructions along these lines, since he himself learned, by dear experience, how to avoid the common mistakes of an amateur, and, with practically nothing to start with, built up what is probably the most extensive business in connection with bees in the great State of Michigan. Moreover, he has never been carried away, so to speak, by fads and fancies; his advice always bristles with practical common sense. It is hoped that by compiling these articles in book form we are going to "fill a long-felt want." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the Wisconsin Natural History Society, Vol. 5: New Series Origin of Species, has effected a more wonderful revolution in our modes of thought and investigation than anyone can realize who has not lived in close touch with every year's progress. The dogma of special creations has exhibited most stubborn tenacity, but it has slowly yielded to the principle of progressive evolution guided by the operation of natural laws. The violent shock experienced by theologists at seeing natural selection set in the place of Creative power, the revulsion at the thought of uni versal kinship in the organic world, especially at the doctrine of man's descent from lower forms of life - all this lingers only as reminiscence, and we now find satisfaction in viewing the history of our race as a grand series of ascending stages, and take more pride in a rising ancestry than in a fallen one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gleanings in Bee Culture, Vol. 16: January 1, 1888 I never like to recommend any thing I have nev er tried, sol kept silent on that point. Since it has come up, though, I will say that it is my Opin ion that _it will pay, under some circumstances at least, to, leave the extracting-combs on until a start has been made in the sections. This will be some more labor, and will increase the proportion of extracted honey produced; but there will not be such a break in the work of'the colony, and not so much liability to swarm. By the way, my bees do not swarm nearly so much as most others' seem to. I do not know whether the difference is in management, locality. Or bees; but it seems to me there is a difference. I am heartily glad to see SO many testify to the worthlessness of Old combs in sections. It will probably be hard work to get it into the heads of some that it is any thing else than wicked waste to melt up nice combs; but I think we can persuade the majority that all section combs not in the best possible condition had better be made over. It is not likely that many very soon will grasp the whole truth that it will not pay to save any such sections at all.
