Seeking out some of the most successful beekeepers in the world, Steve spent time with them, interviewed and got to know them. This book is a collection of the wisdom, experiences, opinions and stories of these legends of beekeeping. A rare insight into the lives of commercial beekeepers, warts and all, Interviews With Beekeepers is gold dust to anyone who wants to know more about keeping bees. Book excerpt: 2022 NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD WINNER FOR TRANSLATED FICTION With a warm yet political humor, Ukraine’s most famous novelist presents a balanced and illuminating portrait of modern conflict. Little Starhorodivka, a village of three streets, lies in Ukraine's Grey Zone, the no-man's-land between loyalist and separatist forces. Thanks to the lukewarm war of sporadic violence and constant propaganda that has been dragging on for years, only two residents remain: retired safety inspector turned beekeeper Sergey Sergeyich and Pashka, a rival from his schooldays. With little food and no electricity, under constant threat of bombardment, Sergeyich's one remaining pleasure is his bees. As spring approaches, he knows he must take them far from the Grey Zone so they can collect their pollen in peace. This simple mission on their behalf introduces him to combatants and civilians on both sides of the battle lines: loyalists, separatists, Russian occupiers and Crimean Tatars. Wherever he goes, Sergeyich's childlike simplicity and strong moral compass disarm everyone he meets. But could these qualities be manipulated to serve an unworthy cause, spelling disaster for him, his bees and his country?
Book Synopsis A Spring Without Bees by : Michael Schacker
Download or read book A Spring Without Bees written by Michael Schacker and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2008 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Publisher: A century after the birth of Rachel Carson, the world faces a new environmental disaster, from a chemical similar to DDT. This time the culprit appears to be IMD, or imidacloprid, a relatively new but widely used insecticide in the United States. Many beekeepers and researchers blame IMD for Colony Collapse Disorder, which has wiped out 23% of America's beehives. Even trace amounts make bees unable to fly back to their hive. Since honeybees are essential to the production of most major food crops, their demise could spell catastrophe. In a riveting, scientific/political detective story, Michael Schacker examines the evidence and offers a plan to save the bees. Like An Inconvenient Truth and Silent Spring, A Spring without Bees is both a powerful cautionary tale and a call to action.

Download or read book Feeding Bees written by Wally Shaw and published by Northern Bee Books. This book was released on 2021-01-11 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honey bees collect two types of food material; nectar and pollen. With the collection of nectar there is no evidence that there is any selection based on its nutrient value, other than as a source of energy (their dietary carbohydrate). Pollen is their source of protein and lipids (fats). By contrast, foraging for this vital material is much more complex and seems to be based on the nutritional value of the pollen. Bees will forage for easily collected pollens but will also go out of their way to obtain supplies of a diverse range of other pollens that may require much more effort. How much and how often a beekeeper needs to feed honey bee colonies depends on beekeeping practices, e.g. how much of their honey is harvested. But the environmental conditions to which they are exposed (primarily forage availability and climate) also needs to be taken into account. This booklet offers advice on what materials can safely be used to feed bees, at what times of year feeding may be required and how to assess their needs. Also discussed is the means of delivery; the types feeder that can be used and their pros and cons.

Book Synopsis The Lives of Bees by : Thomas D. Seeley
Download or read book The Lives of Bees written by Thomas D. Seeley and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeley, a world authority on honey bees, sheds light on why wild honey bees are still thriving while those living in managed colonies are in crisis. Drawing on the latest science as well as insights from his own pioneering fieldwork, he describes in extraordinary detail how honey bees live in nature and shows how this differs significantly from their lives under the management of beekeepers. Seeley presents an entirely new approach to beekeeping--Darwinian Beekeeping--which enables honey bees to use the toolkit of survival skills their species has acquired over the past thirty million years, and to evolve solutions to the new challenges they face today. He shows beekeepers how to use the principles of natural selection to guide their practices, and he offers a new vision of how beekeeping can better align with the natural habits of honey bees.

Download or read book A Book of Bees written by Sue Hubbell and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book: “A melodious mix of memoir, nature journal, and beekeeping manual” (Kirkus Reviews). Weaving a vivid portrait of her own life and her bees’ lives, author Sue Hubbell lovingly describes the ins and outs of beekeeping on her small Missouri farm, where the end of one honey season is the start of the next. With three hundred hives, Hubbell stays busy year-round tending to the bees and harvesting their honey, a process that is as personally demanding as it is rewarding. Exploring the progression of both the author and the hive through the seasons, this is “a book about bees to be sure, but it is also about other things: the important difference between loneliness and solitude; the seasonal rhythms inherent in rural living; the achievement of independence; the accommodating of oneself to nature” (The Philadelphia Inquirer). Beautifully written and full of exquisitely rendered details, it is a tribute to Hubbell’s wild hilltop in the Ozarks and of the joys of living a complex life in a simple place.
