Book excerpt: Your Bee-attitude starts with Bee-lieving. According to the laws of aerodynamics, bees should not be able to fly. Their wings are too small and their bodies are too fat to get off the ground. But they fly. If you are willing to bee-lieve that you can achieve and if you are willing to work hard, then you too can "fly." This is the Bee-attitude. Bea Grace Curri uses a clever list of alphabetical encouragement for young readers to develop a "you can do it" attitude. She tells remarkable stories of people who by all appearances "couldn't," and yet who "did" anyway...with great success. If you want your children to turn those stumbling blocks into stepping stones, Bee Attitude is for you and for them. It's bee-autiful. Bea Grace Curri has a wealth of experience working with children as a religious educator and youth minister for the Dioceses of Syracuse, New York, and Orlando, Florida. She has been married to her husband, John for thirty-eight years and has two sons and six grandchildren. Bea approaches life with enthusiasm.

There is a very large old Plantation home in the middle of the retreat that has a wonderful balcony overlooking the entire property. A babbling river runs right through the middle of the land and empties into a sparkling pond. Rolling hills of flowers and open fields of hay are all surrounded by a forest of trees. Bentley Bennigan the beekeeper, lives in the big house and sits on his balcony watching over all his treasured creatures. Three red barns are placed around the retreat and the largest one sits on top of the highest hill with a special beehive of honey bees. There are twenty-six bees in this hive that were chosen by the beekeeper because of their great attitudes. Each bee has been given a name by the beekeeper to match his or her special attitude. The bees all work together to help each other and their friends out. These bees are very busy using their gifts to prosper their hive but also work hard to pollinate their beautiful surroundings. As the bees go through their days, they encounter other creatures who struggle with certain issues so they try to help them learn a better way to do things.
Book Synopsis Talking About Jane Austen in Baghdad by : Bee Rowlatt
Download or read book Talking About Jane Austen in Baghdad written by Bee Rowlatt and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2010-02-04 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A London mum and Iraqi teacher should have nothing in common. Yet now, despite their differences, they're the firmest of friends . . . Talking About Jane Austen in Baghdad by Bee Rowlatt and May Witwit is a touching and poignant portrait of an unlikely friendship. Would you brave gun-toting militias for a cut and blow dry? May's a tough-talking, hard-smoking, lecturer in English. She's also an Iraqi from a Sunni-Shi'ite background living in Baghdad, dodging bullets before breakfast, bargaining for high heels in bombed-out bazaars and battling through blockades to reach her class of Jane Austen-studying girls. Bee, on the other hand, is a London mum of three, busy fighting off PTA meetings and chicken pox, dealing with dead cats and generally juggling work and family while squabbling with her globe-trotting husband over the socks he leaves lying around the house. They should have nothing in common. But when a simple email brings them together, they discover a friendship that overcomes all their differences of culture, religion and age. Talking About Jane Austen in Baghdad is the story of two women who share laughter and tears, and swap their confidences, dreams and fears. And, between the grenades, the gossip, the jokes and the secrets, they also hatch an ingenious plan to help May escape the bombings of Baghdad . . . Bee Rowlatt is a former show-girl turned BBC World Service journalist. A mother of three and would-be do-gooder, she can find keeping her career going while caring for her three daughters (and husband) pretty tough, even in leafy North London. May Witwit is an Iraqi expert in Chaucer and sender of emails depicting kittens in fancy dress. She is prepared to face every hazard imaginable to make that all-important hairdresser's appointment.

But for this New York socialite, the orchard is a chance to prove to my family—and myself—that I can do more, be more. I may not exactly know what I want out of life yet, but I’m determined to stick to something. And no, I’m not talking about the crabby bee farmer next door. Here’s what I know: if I can’t tough out one full month of a rooster waking me at sunrise, a poolhall parrot with a foul mouth, and a llama that swings both ways, not only will I lose my self-respect, I’ll lose my trust fund too. What I don’t know is why my neighbor with the bad attitude and a whole lot of sexy seems hellbent on sending me home. Well, he can buzz the hell off. At least until I accidentally stumble into his apiary, and things start to get a whole lot stickier...
Book Synopsis Listening to the Bees by : Mark Winston
Download or read book Listening to the Bees written by Mark Winston and published by Harbour Publishing. This book was released on 2018-04-28 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Listening to the Bees is a collaborative exploration by two writers to illuminate the most profound human questions: Who are we? Who do we want to be in the world? Through the distinct but complementary lenses of science and poetry, Mark Winston and Renée Saklikar reflect on the tension of being an individual living in a society, and about the devastation wrought by overly intensive management of agricultural and urban habitats. Listening to the Bees takes readers into the laboratory and out to the field, into the worlds of scientists and beekeepers, and to meetings where the research community intersects with government policy and business. The result is an insiders’ view of the way research is conducted—its brilliant potential and its flaws—along with the personal insights and remarkable personalities experienced over a forty-year career that parallels the rise of industrial agriculture.
Book Synopsis Why Dogs Hump and Bees Get Depressed by : Marc Bekoff
Download or read book Why Dogs Hump and Bees Get Depressed written by Marc Bekoff and published by New World Library. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2009, Marc Bekoff was asked to write on animal emotions for Psychology Today. Some 500 popular, jargon-free essays later, the field of anthrozoology — the study of human-animal relationships — has grown exponentially, as have scientific data showing how smart and emotional nonhuman animals are. Here Bekoff offers selected essays that showcase the fascinating cognitive abilities of other animals as well as their empathy, compassion, grief, humor, joy, and love. Humpback whales protect gray whales from orca attacks, combat dogs and other animals suffer from PTSD, and chickens, rats, and mice display empathy. This collection is both an updated sequel to Bekoff’s popular book The Emotional Lives of Animals and a call to begin the important work of “rewilding” ourselves and changing the way we treat other animals.

Book Synopsis Pictures of Girlhood by : Sarah Hentges
Download or read book Pictures of Girlhood written by Sarah Hentges and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the "coming of age" story has been a popular film plot for decades, producers have only recently realized the commercial potential of targeting films to adolescent girls. Movies like Clueless, Legally Blonde and Mean Girls have been successfully marketed to teenage girls, as have several well-known independent films. Important as both cultural indicators and catalysts, these films simultaneously demonstrate pop culture's influence on girls' films, and the ability of girls' films to affect pop culture and perceptions of girlhood. This critical survey of film and the modern girl concentrates largely on films of the last two decades, addressing key themes for girls within "coming of age" films, the changing (but not always improving) young feminine paradigm, and the ways these films can be powerful determinants of culture. The first chapter explores the ways in which girls' films construct, reinforce, challenge and dismantle mainstream conceptualizations of sexuality, race and power. The second chapter discusses mainstream limitations of "coming of age" narratives, including recycled plots and stars, treatments of parental and male authority, and adult conceptualizations of adolescence. The third chapter describes girls' experiences within these narratives through such conventions as attitude, teen fashion, music and dance, unsanctioned rites of passage, and race. The fourth chapter covers the negotiation of sex and sexuality, virginity and sexual empowerment. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.
