Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An “ominous and persuasive” study of when violence starts in child development—and the preventive measures to stop it (The New York Times Book Review). This new, revised edition incorporates significant advances in neurobiological research and includes a new introduction by Dr. Vincent J. Felitti, a leading researcher in the field. When Ghosts from the Nursery: Tracing the Roots of Violence was first published, it was lauded for providing scientific evidence that violence can originate in the womb and become entrenched in a child’s brain by preschool. The authors’ groundbreaking conclusions became even more relevant following the wave of school shootings across the nation including the tragedies at Columbine High School, Sandy Hook Elementary School, and shocking subsequent shootings. Following each of these, media coverage and public debate turned yet again to the usual suspects concerning the causes of violence: widespread availability of guns and lack of mental health services for late-stage treatment. Discussion of the impact of trauma on human life—especially early in life during chemical and structural formation of the brain—is missing from the equation. Karr-Morse and Wiley continue to shift the conversation among parents and policy makers toward more fundamental preventative measures against violence. “Karr-Morse and Wiley boldly raise some tough issues . . . [They] start with a grim question—why are children violent?—and they forge a passionate and cogent argument for focusing our collective energies on infancy and parenthood to stop the cycle of ruined lives.” —The Seattle Times

Book excerpt: Through these true stories, I wanted to tell a reality that is not often told, or realized by the general public. Nursing is a very demanding job, no matter what field you work in. Most nurses are hard-working, conscientious, and display empathy when most people would not be able to. Sadly, some nurses are not up to the task, I must admit, which often results in negligence. Often people - our patients - suffer because of this. This book tells several true stories about nurses and doctors alike who have sex with their patients, and each other. Also, it talks about rape, and how hospital staff have covered it up. I have written about drug and alcohol abuse on the job. Even cases where nurses deprived their own patients of narcotics, or pain killers, only to ingest them themselves, and give their patients a placebo. Some stories outline how nursing staff are so very often injured and knowingly placed in danger. Often both the doctor and management could have easily intervened to help avoid these incidents. Sadly, I talk about the many child molesters and rapists who are let out to roam the streets, against the nursing staff's wishes. These same patients reoffend regularly. The general public should know what really goes on as there are many horrible things that happen due to negligence or greed. It is important to make note of these realities. The majority of staff I have worked with have impressed me on countless occasions with their empathy, dedication, and self-sacrifice to help their patients. Like most things in life, it only takes a few bad apples to spoil everything. "If you're a fan of ER or Grey's Anatomy, you'll want to read this book."

This book was released on 2013-02-25 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of true narratives reflects the dynamism and diversity of nurses, who provide the first vital line of patient care. Here, nurses remember their first "sticks," first births, and first deaths, and reflect on what gets them though long, demanding shifts, and keeps them in the profession. The stories reveal many voices from nurses at different stages of their careers: One nurse-in-training longs to be trusted with more "important" procedures, while another questions her ability to care for nursing home residents. An efficient young emergency room nurse finds his life and career irrevocably changed by a car accident. A nurse practitioner wonders whether she has violated professional boundaries in her care for a homeless man with AIDS, and a home care case manager is the sole attendee at a funeral for one of her patients. What connects these stories is the passion and strength of the writers, who struggle against burnout and bureaucracy to serve their patients with skill, empathy, and strength.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The memoir of an innovative American educator and the remarkable school she built—“a lucid presentation of what progressive education can accomplish” (The New York Times). Over a century ago, American educator Caroline Pratt created an innovative school that fosters creativity and independent thought by asking the provocative question: “Was it unreasonable to try to fit the school to the child, rather than . . . the child to the school?” A strong-willed small-town schoolteacher who ran a one-room schoolhouse by the time she was seventeen, Pratt came to viscerally reject the teaching methods of her day, which often featured a long-winded teacher at the front of the room and rows of miserable children sitting on benches nailed to the floor. In this “persuasive presentation of progressive education,” Pratt recounts how she founded what is now the dynamic City and Country School in New York City, invented the “unit blocks” that have become a staple in classrooms around the globe, and played an important role in reimagining preschool and primary-school education in ways that are essential for the tumultuously creative time we live in today (Kirkus Reviews).
