Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over one hundred years ago in Russia, G. I. Gurdjieff introduced a spiritual teaching of conscious evolution—a way of gnosis or “knowledge of being” passed on from remote antiquity. Gurdjieff’s early talks in Europe were published in the form of chronological fragments preserved by his close followers P. D. Ouspensky and Jeanne de Salzmann. Now these teachings are presented as a comprehensive whole, covering a variety of subjects including states of consciousness, methods of self-study, spiritual work in groups, laws of the cosmos, and the universal symbol known as the Enneagram. Gurdjieff respected traditional religious practices, which he regarded as falling into three general categories or “ways”: the Way of the Fakir, related to mastery of the physical body; the Way of the Monk, based on faith and feeling; and the Way of the Yogi, which focuses on development of the mind. He presented his teaching as a “Fourth Way” that integrates these three aspects into a single path of self-knowledge. The principles are laid out as a way of knowing and experiencing an awakened level of being that must be verified for oneself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becoming Conscious with G.I.Gurdjieff Solange Claustres In principle all known Traditions are based on 'belief'. Gurdjieff's teaching is not a matter of belief, but of having a discerning spirit with which to practise and experience what is taught in order to understand, and to become conscious and responsible for oneself. It is a teaching which includes "work" on the three main parts of the human being, enabling a furtherment and deepening develop- ment of the whole. This teaching has always existed. It surfaces in one form or another, according to the demands and needs of time, place and changing civilisations, whenever humanity is out of balance and loses its reason and lucidity. This teaching is neither a religion nor a philosophy. It can help us to further our understanding of our own Tradition. The essential is that it is practised in our current daily life, just as it is, without changing it. The aim of this teaching is to become conscious: it is transmitted orally and practically, from teacher to pupil, and also from elder to younger members within a group. Solanges Claustres was close to Gurdjieff from 1941 until his death in 1949. She has more than 60 years experience of being involved in this teaching. She led movements classes from the very beginning, and she took part in numerous movements films. She has led her own work groups on Gurdjieff's teaching in France. She has directed movements classes, and taken part in the guidance of work groups in England, Holland and the U.S.A.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important book on liberating ourselves from the state of “waking sleep” in which we live our lives, as taught by one of the most influential spiritual teachers of the 20th century As the closest pupil of the charismatic spiritual master G. I. Gurdjieff (1866–1949), Jeanne de Salzmann was charged with carrying on his teachings of spiritual transformation. Known as the Fourth Way or “The Work,” Gurdjieff’s system was based on teachings of the East that he adapted for modern life in the West. Now, some twenty years after de Salzmann's death, the notebooks that she filled with her insights over a forty-year period (and intended to publish) have been translated and edited by a small group of her family and followers. The result is this long-awaited guide to Gurdjieff's teaching, describing the routes to be traveled and the landmarks encountered along the way. Organized according to themes, the chapters touch on all the important concepts and practices of the Work, including: • Awakening from the sleep of identification with the ordinary level of being • Self-observation and self-remembering • Conscious effort and voluntary suffering • Understanding symbolic concepts like the Enneagram • The Gurdjieff Movements, bodily exercises that provide training in Presence and the awareness of subtle energies • The necessity of a "school," meaning the collective practice of the teaching in a group Madame de Salzmann brings to the Work her own strong, direct language and personal journey in learning to live that knowledge of a higher level of being, which, she insists, “you have to see for yourself” on a level beyond theory and concept. De Salzmann consistently refused to discuss the teaching in terms of ideas, for this Fourth Way is to be experienced, not simply thought or believed.

Book excerpt: "Discovering Gurdjieff is more than just a memoir, it is an at times painfully honest account of one woman's quest to find answers to the questions that troubled her from an early age, and ultimately to discover a philosophy of life by which she might live. Along the way, she examines various religions, but it is not until her introduction to Gurdjieff's work through the 1941 lectures of J.G. Bennett, the essence of which she reproduces in his original words, that her search is rewarded. In later chapters, she faithfully reproduces the conversations she had in Paris with Gurdjieff and the monumental effect his teachings had on her search for Truth. Gurdjieff has had a lifelong influence on Dorothy and she spent much of the last 25 years of her life setting down her memories and ensuring their accuracy. At the time of writing, she was one of the last few people left alive who knew Gurdjieff personally, and as such her book gives an authentic view of the work and charismatic nature of this teacher, who Colin Wilson called "the greatest teacher of the 20th century"... However, the unique element of this book is her description of the way meetings with Gurdjieff himself, along with her fervent study of relevant works, gradually enabled her to discover herself"--Dust jacket.

Book excerpt: The Third Striving consists of an examination of World Laws and World Maintenance as put forth by G. I Gurdjieff. In his epic work All and Everything, Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson, the third "striving," which is formulated thus: "the conscious striving to know ever more and more concerning the laws of World-creation and World-maintenance, is the third of five " ' being-obligolnian-strivings' " to be practiced ..." in order to have in their consciousness this Divine function of genuine conscience...," (Beelzebub's Tales, pp 385-86). To inquire into and come to an understanding of Law is a responsibility for all individuals who practice and pursue the Gurdjieff Work. It is required (but not enough) to carry out a variety of practices and to struggle, in one's inner world, toward a realization of Conscience. Beyond this, Gurdjieff calls on us to consciously come to Objective Reason, and this requires us to contemplate and actively mentate as best we can on the laws which define the working of our inner and outer World. Only when we understand the laws can we hope to properly utilize the energies of Okidanokh, in the coating process of Kesdjan and Higher Being-body. This volume seeks to offer discoveries and further inquiry into this pivotal "striving," employing the most recent discoveries in modern physics, cosmology, biology and chemistry along with experiential data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people are looking for a deeper and richer spiritual life. They sense that there is more to their existence than the surface of life seems to offer, but they are confused and uncertain about where to look and how to begin. Being Consciousness Bliss is a rich, profound, and eminently accessible compendium of wisdom that will help orient people toward a more fruitful spiritual search. Drawing on a dazzling array of sources, including the insights of G.I. Gurdjieff and P.D. Ouspensky as well as the spiritual traditions of the East, it gives a clear and compelling account of the true inner structure of the human being and how it may be developed to its full potential. Part One discusses the current human condition -- the "sleep" of ordinary life -- and how a person may begin to wake up from it. Part Two offers a feast of excerpts from the Perennial Philosophy -- the great wisdom tradition that underlies all cultures and religions -- to feed and nurture the growth of the soul. Part Three provides simple ways to put these insights into practice in daily life. Clear, sensible, and erudite, Being Consciousness Bliss is a resource, suitable for both beginners and advanced practitioners, to be used and treasured for many years. "This is a feast of a book, spread out like a banquet of the freshest foods, served wholesomely, and presented artfully. Starting from a premise that "the aim of human life is to know who we are - to realize our Self, our true nature, and our identity with the Universal Self...," Fitzgerald's poetic and passionate prose awakens consciousness on a deep level. She helps us feel the Self, so we can begin to work with the Self. To complement her own inspired writing, she includes a section with words of wisdom from other sources, grouped by such intent as to examine suffering or to explore aspiration. In addition, there is a cornucopia of suggestions for practice, such as how to focus attention on a task, or how to listen to the sound of your own voice. Dotted with illustrations and charts to further clarify the text, this work is an invitation to a nourishing meal of self-awareness." --S.J.A., Managing Editor, NAPRA Review "Following Aldous Huxley, Astrid Fitzgerald's tireless pursuit of an inner path is sure to awaken the heart to bliss and rouse spirit to behold." --David Appelbaum, editor of Parabola Magazine "This book is equal parts wisdom, beauty, and inspiration. Astrid Fitzgerald opens the insights of the ages for anyone to follow. Highly recommended." --Larry Dossey, M.D., author of Healing Beyond the Body, Reinventing Medicine, and Healing Words "Astrid Fitzgerald's Being Consciousness Bliss is a well-researched, clearly written account of the essential teachings given by all the major wisdom traditions, which all teach that we are one human family." -- Sri Swami Satchidananda, Founder & Spiritual Head, Integral Yoga International /Satchidananda Ashram, Yogaville

Book excerpt: This book is an in-depth examination of the much needed process of “self” study known as self observation. We live in an age where the “attention function” in the brain has been badly damaged by TV and computers-up to 90 percent of the public under age 35 suffers from attention-deficit disorder! This book offers the most direct, non-pharmaceutical means of healing attention dysfunction. The methods presented here are capable of restoring attention to a fully functional and powerful tool for success in life and relationships. This is also an age when humanity has lost its connection with conscience. When humanity has poisoned the Earth’s atmosphere, water, air and soil, when cancer is in epidemic proportions and is mainly an environmental illness, the author asks: What is the root cause? And he boldly answers: Failure to develop conscience! Selfobservation, he asserts, is the most ancient, scientific, and proven means to develop this crucial inner guide to awakening and a moral life. This book is for the lay-reader, both the beginner and the advanced student of self observation. No other book on the market examines this practice in such detail. There are hundreds of books on self-help and meditation, but almost none on self-study via self-observation, and none with the depth of analysis, wealth of explication, and richness of experience which this book offers. Red Hawk, author of 5 collections of poetry, was the Hodder Fellow at Princeton University (1992-93) and is currently a full professor at the University of Arkansas, Monticello. He has practiced self-observation for over 30 years, under the guidance of the Gurdjieff Society of Arkansas, meditation master Osho Rajneesh, and spiritual teacher, Lee Lozowick.

Book excerpt: "This is the first analysis of all of Gurdjieff's published internal exercises, together with those taught by his students, George and Helen Adie. It includes a fresh biographical study of Gurdjieff, with ground-breaking observations on his relationships with P.D. Ouspensky and A.R. Orage (especially, why he wanted to collaborate with them, and why that broke down). It shows that Gurdjieff was, fundamentally, a mystic, and that his contemplation-like methods were probably drawn from Mt Athos and its hesychast tradition. It shows the continuity in Gurdjieff's teaching, but also development and change. His original contribution to Western Esotericism lay in his use of tasks, disciplines, and contemplation-like exercises to bring his pupils to a sense of their own presence which could, to some extent, be maintained in daily life in the social domain, and not only in the secluded conditions typical of meditation. It contends that he had initially intended not to use contemplation-like exercises, as he perceived dangers to be associated with these monastic methods, and the religious tradition to be in tension with the secular guise in which he first couched his teaching. As Gurdjieff adapted the teaching he had found in Eastern monasteries to Western urban and post-religious culture, he found it necessary to introduce contemplation. His development of the methods is demonstrated, and the importance of the three exercises in the Third Series, Life Is Real only then, when 'I Am', is shown, together with their almost certain borrowing from the exercises of the Philokalia. G.I. Gurdjieff P.D. Ouspensky A.R. Orage George Adie Mysticism Meditation Contemplation Fourth Way Hesychasm Western Esotericism"--

Book excerpt: The Gurdjieff tradition, commonly referred to as "The Work,” describes people’s daily lives as completely mechanical, conducted asleep. Gurdjieff's intent, as with many sacred traditions, was literally to aid in one's awakening. The tools for doing this are many but integrated. The various methods of "The Work" are intended to specifically integrate a person’s physical, emotional, and intellectual centers into a fourth way of consciousness. Like Zen, this tradition has been an oral one emphasizing the relationship of teacher to student. But there have also been extensive writings on this tradition, and The Inner Journey collects some of the best of these in the form of essays, interviews, and fables. To expand readers’ experience and understanding of both Gurdjieff's life and his teachings, the book is bundled with the feature film Meetings with Remarkable Men, Peter Brook’s critically acclaimed adaptation of the early years of Gurdjieff’s search for meaning.

Book excerpt: These diary entries from John and Elizabeth Bennett cover the few months before Gurdjieff's death in Paris on October29, 1949. Twice daily the group would go through a series of rituals, the most significant of which was known as "the toast of the idiots". This "science of idiotism" portrayed the human situation and the hazards of attaining liberation.
