Book excerpt: In Feels Right Kemi Adeyemi presents an ethnography of how black queer women in Chicago use dance to assert their physical and affective rights to the city. Adeyemi stages the book in queer dance parties in gentrifying neighborhoods, where good feelings are good business. But feeling good is elusive for black queer women whose nightlives are undercut by white people, heterosexuality, neoliberal capitalism, burnout, and other buzzkills. Adeyemi documents how black queer women respond to these conditions: how they destroy DJ booths, argue with one another, dance slowly, and stop partying altogether. Their practices complicate our expectations that life at night, on the queer dance floor, or among black queer community simply feels good. Adeyemi’s framework of “feeling right” instead offers a closer, kinesthetic look at how black queer women adroitly manage feeling itself as a complex right they should be afforded in cities that violently structure their movements and energies. What emerges in Feels Right is a sensorial portrait of the critical, black queer geographies and collectivities that emerge in social dance settings and in the broader neoliberal city. Book excerpt: From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Alexandra Ivy comes a new story in her Guardians of Eternity series… Only an idiot would try to kidnap Jayla. She’s a take-no-prisoner kind of vampire who rebelled against the previous King of Vampires, and now regularly battles with both human and demon enemies who resent the success of Dreamscape casino she manages in Hong Kong. So when she’s snatched off the streets, she doesn’t bother to struggle. Instead she starts plotting her slow, bloody revenge. The last creature she expects when she arrives at her destination is Azrael, the mysterious mercenary vampire she killed a century ago. Azrael has never forgotten Jayla, and not just because she tried to stab a stake through his heart. He’d never encountered a female who could match him in battle. Her raw courage was sexy as hell. And it didn’t hurt that she was drop-dead gorgeous. But, he didn’t abduct her because he desired her. Or at least, that wasn’t his main motivation. He needs her rare talent to stop time. An evil fey has stolen his sword. The weapon is magically bound to him, and unless he retrieves it, he’s doomed to a painful death. **Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.** Reviews for Slayed by Darkness: “One of my favorite PNR series - Ivy spins such a fantastically fun world with solid storylines and characters that easily stay with you long after you close the pages” - A Wonderful World of Words “I am hooked. Book excerpt: Jayla Jones is a ranger at Evergreen National Park: stubborn, bold, and strong as the mountains she so lovingly protects and calls home. Ciara Rigby is a feather-on-the-wind kind of woman. A travel blogger and photographer, she is always on the move from adventure to adventure. When a snow storm moves in fast, both women are forced to shelter together in a bare-bones cabin. They find plenty to complain about, from the cold, to the odd company, to the fact that there's only one bed. As they face the blizzard together, they find they have more in common than they presumed, and sharing warmth isn't the only reason they have to share the bed. Opposites though they may be, the connection they forge while trapped together in the storm is as strong as the mountains. But Ciara plans to leave as soon as the snow melts... This is a 40,000 word novella. This story contains explicit sexual content.

Book excerpt: Jay has been living in Sophia’s ear for three months. He’d been created by her, an AI experiment she developed in her free time. Now, after several iterations of the AI, Jay can track the functioning of her body, feed Sophia what to say in any conversation, and run complex calculations in a few seconds. All was well. But one night, after a new procedure to increase the production of red blood cells following Sophia’s aplastic anemia diagnosis, Jay takes over. Sophia’s mind and body are gone; Jay controls them now. And he has plans for her. In this chilling thriller, Sophia offers a future in which human beings and AI become one, and explores what happens when humans advance too far. About the Author Paul Clark spent his early adult life trying many different jobs to learn and discover what suited him best. When he found out that he would soon become a father, he enrolled in college in Eugene, Oregon; this is where he discovered technology. From 1989 to the present day, Clark has had a distinguished career in technology, working across a dozen industries and helping organizations solve difficult and interesting problems. With the advancement of artificial intelligence, Clark was once again invigorated by this new area of technology. As AI became more prevalent, Clark’s family and friends would inquire about AI, mostly regarding concerns about the future of AI and what it meant for humans. The questions they asked became the impetus for Sophia. Clark currently lives in Washington state with his wife, Rowlyn, and their five pets. He has two children, Cecilia and Hannah. His wife and daughters were a significant support structure not only for the creation of this book but also for his life; without them, Sophia would never have been written. Additionally, Clark has two brothers and a sister, all of whom helped support this work, with a special call out to Victor, his brother, for constantly reading and rereading these pages and supplying invaluable feedback. Clark enjoys time with his family and friends. He plays the guitar and bass and enjoys a mindless game every once in a while. He considers himself a general semanticist, following the general semantics discipline started by Alfred Korzybski. However, his favorite pastime is reading. Paul loves animals and cares deeply for their plight in a world that seems to discard them like trash. Although he is primarily self-taught, he holds education with high regard.
