Book excerpt: Almost forgotten in the haze of events that followed Nagasaki and Hiroshima, the summer of 1945 witnessed an intense public debate over how best to end the war against Japan. Weary of fighting, the American people were determined to defeat the imperial power that had so viciously attacked them in December 1941, but they were uncertain of the best means to accomplish this goal. Certain of victory—the "inevitable triumph" promised by Franklin Roosevelt immediately after Pearl Harbor—Americans became increasingly concerned about the human cost of defeating Japan. Particularly after the brutal Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns, syndicated columnists, newspaper editorialists, radio commentators, and others questioned the necessity of invasion. A lengthy naval and aerial siege would have saved lives but might have protracted the war beyond the public's patience. Advertisers filled the media with visions of postwar affluence even as the government was exhorting its citizens to remain dedicated to the war effort. There was heated discussion as well about the morality of firebombing Japanese cities and of using poison gas and other agents of chemical warfare. Chappell provides a balanced assessment of all these debates, grounding his observations in a wealth of primary sources. Written to his wife by a medic serving with the segregated Japanese American unit, the letters describe a soldier's daily life. Minoru Masuda was born and raised in Seattle. In 1939 he earned a master's degree in pharmacology and married Hana Koriyama. Two years later the Japanese struck Pearl Harbor, and Min and Hana were imprisoned along with thousands of other Japanese Americans. When the Army recruited in the relocation camp, Masuda chose to serve in the 442nd. In April 1944 the unit was shipped overseas. They fought in Italy and in France, where they liberated Bruyeres and rescued a "lost battalion" that had been cut off by the Germans. After the German surrender on May 3, 1945, Masuda was among the last of the original volunteers to leave Europe; he arrived home on New Year's Eve 1945. Masuda's vivid and lively letters portray his surroundings, his daily activities, and the people he encountered. He describes Italian farmhouses, olive groves, and avenues of cypress trees; he writes of learning to play the ukulele with his "big, clumsy" fingers, and the nightly singing and bull sessions which continued throughout the war; he relates the plight of the Italians who scavenged the 442nd's garbage for food, and the mischief of French children who pelted the medics with snowballs. Excerpts from the 442nd daily medical log provide context for the letters, and Hana interposes brief recollections of her experiences. The letters are accompanied by snapshots, a drawing made in the field, and three maps drawn by Masuda.

Book excerpt: Following the Japanese invasion of northeast China in 1931, the occupying authorities established the Manchuria Film Association to promote film production efficiency and serve Japan’s propaganda needs. Manchuria Film Association had two tasks: to make “national policy films” as part of a cultural mission of educating Chinese in Manchukuo (the puppet state created in 1932) on the special relationship between Japan and the region, and to block the exhibition of Chinese films from Shanghai that contained anti-Japanese messages. The corporation relied on Japanese capital, technology, and film expertise, but it also employed many Chinese filmmakers. After the withdrawal of Japanese forces in 1945, many of these individuals were portrayed as either exploited victims or traitorous collaborators. Yuxin Ma seeks to move the conversation beyond such simplistic and inaccurate depictions. By focusing on the daily challenges and experiences of the Chinese workers at the corporation, Ma examines how life was actually lived by people navigating between practical and ideological concerns. She illustrates how the inhabitants of Manchukuo navigated social opportunities, economic depression, educational reforms, fascist rule, commercial interests, practical daily needs, and more—and reveals ways in which these conflicting preoccupations sometimes manifested as tension and ambiguity on screen. In the battle between repression and expression, these Chinese actors, directors, writers, and technicians adopted defensive and opportunistic tactics. They did so in colonial spaces, often rejecting modernist representations of Manchukuo in favor of venerating traditional Chinese culture and values. Book excerpt: The central motif of this unique historical memoir is the life of the authors family in Dairen (now Dalian) during the Japanese occupation, then the Soviet occupation, and, finally, under the Chinese Communist Government. Ms. Erohina gave the background of the historical events which affected the lives of the Russians, the Chinese, and the Japanese during the Second World War and the postwar years. She explains why the Russians lived in China, and how they not only preserved their culture and language but contributed greatly to the fields of science, music, and literature. Some lived there at the turn of the 20th Century as businessmen, and many came to Manchuria (now Northeast of the Peoples Republic of China) during the railway construction, which was a branch of the Trans-Siberian Railroad. The majority, however, came as refugees fleeing from the Bolsheviks during the Civil War that immediately followed the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. Th e Civil War split the people into the Reds, or the Bolsheviks, and the Whites, who apposed them. The authors grandparents were among the refugees. Ms. Erohina described her familys move to Shanghai in 1954 as a transit point for the departure from China, and gave a detailed account of its early and postwar years, and its impact on the lives of Russian migrs. Then, followed the familys journey as refugees by sea from China via Hong Kong and many ports from Singapore to South Africa, and then to Brazil. She touched upon their life in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1950s, and then their trip to the United States in 1958 where the family fi nally settled. Author: Tatiana Erohina is a retired college language instructor. She was born and raised in NE China, lived in Brazil, and came to this country in 1958. She has an M.A. in literature from Ohio State University. When she retired, she wrote her unique historical memoir Growing Up Russian in China. She lives in Southern California.
