I think the world you've created is brilliant and so clever. It's a really, really fun take on vampires that I've certainly never come across." Nineteen-year-old Maya has too much on her plate trying to protect her younger sister and struggling with crushes on unsuitable guys. Justin is a newly converted vampire, battling to resist the urge to kill and desperately worried about his brother, converted at the same time but AWOL ever since. If the authorities find him first, he's toast. When the two of them meet through the vampire Maya earmarks to help her with an exciting project aimed at making money, both are taken aback by the mutual attraction. First rule of vampire-human integration though...? You don't go that far. And while living in this bleak world poses its own hazards, Maya and Justin still need to cope with the day to day stuff. Going to college, fighting with your mum, obsessing over the food you can't eat, dealing with unpopularity and online trolls. Contains strong language and some violent scenes.

Book excerpt: Looks at how family, religion, history, news and entertainment keep women thinking they are defenseless. Snortland contends that women are capable of defending themselves and their loved ones--if they learn how. She argues that is not the female's size, it is her culturally induced ignorance that makes her think she is helpless. Snortland offers a clarion call to all women to wake up and take charge of their own self-defense--both verbal and physical--and celebrates women (and kids) who fought back. --Adapted from publisher description.

Your friends say, "Get over it!" "Ignore it." "You make a big deal out of everything." Nonetheless, YOU want to understand what to do next time, whether it involves bad behavior by someone you know, or from a stranger. It's bad enough if you're a girl; boys are "supposed" to know how to handle dicey situations with violent people. Who can they talk to about personal safety without being labeled a "wimp"? Maya, a lawyer who handles divorces, struggles with her mother's wish to marry her off and her distaste for matrimony. Maya watched her parents divorce as a child, which destroyed her faith in love and fostered hatred. On the other hand, Priya is a girl who has lived a life of comfort but wants to stand on her feet and become independent by opening a bakery. She had recently applied for a course in baking to make her dream come true, But her parents and Rahul (her fiance) discourage her because they are convinced she doesn't need a job. After all, she would soon wed a diamond merchant. Everything starts falling out of place for Priya when the marriage dates are preponed, putting Priya’s dream at stake. The childhood friends Priya, Kunal, and Maya plan a trip where they rekindle the lost love and friendship, but at a price. Maya is taken aback when Priya's brother, Dhruv, whom she despises, joins them on the trip. As the days pass, they become fond of each other, turning from enemies to lovers. Priya starts doubting her decision to marry Rahul when she starts having feelings for Kunal. These good times eventually end when Priya confesses about her soon-to-be marriage to Rahul, which she had kept a secret from Maya and Kunal, fearing their reaction. Rahul is an unworthy guy for Priya who body shames her and tries to control her life. The plot develops as Maya and Kunal support Priya's happiness by attending her wedding despite the conflict. During this period, Priya understands her love for Kunal, who helps her realise her worth and fight against all the injustices done to her in the past. On the other hand, Maya realises her love for Dhruv through her constant jealousy when she sees him with other women at the wedding. The story ends when Priya finally takes a stand against the unfair treatment, leaves the marriage, and opens her bakery after pursuing the course. Maya gets engaged to Dhruv, and love steps into her life again after all these years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quick Bites is a collection of middles, published in major newspapers and magazines. What is it that makes the middle stand apart? The middle is short, hardly ever more than 600 to 800 words. It draws strength from humour that skips and romps with the deftness of a mountain goat. It thus turns into a sort of mirror, at times, concave, at times, convex, (never does it remain a plain mirror), and manages to see what lies behind the even contours, that people, events or encounters present. The 120 odd middles in this collection were written over a period of about forty years. They have enough power to evoke laughter at every turn. All of them are distinctly individualistic and are powered by what one may say, the ability to tickle the funny bone.

Book excerpt: When Chinese shopkeepers tried to find a written equivalent of Coca-Cola, one set of characters they chose was pronounced “ke-kou ke-la.” It sounded right, but it literally translated as “bite the wax tadpole.” Language, like travel, is always stranger than we expect and often more beautiful than we imagine. In Biting the Wax Tadpole Elizabeth Little takes a decidedly unstuffy and accessible tour of grammar via the languages of the world—from Lithuanian noun declensions and imperfective Russian verbs to Ancient Greek and Navajo. And in one of the most courageous acts in the history of popular grammar books, she attempts to provide an explanation of verbal aspect that people might actually understand. Other difficult and pressing questions addressed in Biting the Wax Tadpole include: *Just what, exactly, the Swedish names of IKEA products mean *Why Icelandic speakers must decide if the numbers 1-4 are plural *How Theodor Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) was able to take an otherwise unexceptional pair of breakfast foods and turn them into literary fodder for generations *Why Joanie Loves Chachi was Korea’s highest rated television show ever *Why Basque grammar seems downright kooky to just about anyone who isn’t a native speaker

Book excerpt: Nearly every night on every major network, “unscripted” (but carefully crafted) “reality” TV shows routinely glorify retrograde stereotypes that most people would assume got left behind 35 years ago. In Reality Bites Back, media critic Jennifer L. Pozner aims a critical, analytical lens at a trend most people dismiss as harmless fluff. She deconstructs reality TV’s twisted fairytales to demonstrate that far from being simple “guilty pleasures,” these programs are actually guilty of fomenting gender-war ideology and significantly affecting the intellectual and political development of this generation’s young viewers. She lays out the cultural biases promoted by reality TV about gender, race, class, sexuality, and consumerism, and explores how those biases shape and reflect our cultural perceptions of who we are, what we’re valued for, and what we should view as “our place” in society. Smart and informative, Reality Bites Back arms readers with the tools they need to understand and challenge the stereotypes reality TV reinforces and, ultimately, to demand accountability from the corporations responsible for this contemporary cultural attack on three decades of feminist progress.
