Book excerpt: Experience with the SLC has indicated that backgrounds caused by the tails of the transverse beam distribution will be a serious problem for a next generation linear collider. Mechanical scrapers may not provide the best solution, because they may be damaged by the tiny, intense beams, and also because they may induce wakefield kicks large enough to cause emittance dilution. In this paper, we present a possible solution, which uses several nonlinear lenses to drive the tails of the beam to large amplitudes where they can by more easily scraped mechanically. Simulations of several different schemes are presented and evaluated with respect to effectiveness, tolerances and wakefield effects. 4 refs., 6 figs.

Graphite as a possible collimator material exhibits good mechanical properties but a rather poor electrical conductivity. The resulting resistive wakefields can potentially deteriorate the beam quality. The knowledge of strength and scalings of such wakefields is essential for the design of the collimation systems in linear colliders. We present measurements of the self induced wakefield kick that a charged particle beam experiences when it passes through a narrow gap of two graphite collimator jaws. The measurements where performed with the highly damped SLC beam at an energy of 1.19 GeV. The results are compared to theoretical predictions and to measurements with copper collimators of the same shape.

Book excerpt: The international community is in agreement that a lepton collider in the TeV centre of mass energy range is required to leverage discoveries made at the Large Hadron Collider and expand the physics programme. Two future colliders are proposed. The International Linear Collider (ILC) will collide electron and positron bunches at a centre of mass energy of 500 GeV, upgradable to 1 TeV. The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is designed to reach 3 TeV. This thesis investigates the wakefields, which degrade the beam quality, and beam dynamics in the main linacs of the ILC, presenting the first direct comparison of beam dynamics for linacs made up of the alternative high gradient superconducting cavity designs - the Reentrant and Ichiro cavities. Higher order modes of the electromagnetic field in the cavities, which will be excited by the passage of the bunches, are calculated using finite difference and finite element techniques. A trapped dipole mode in the Ichiro cavity at 2.4498 GHz is identified. These modes are used as the basis for the beam dynamics studies. These simulations have demonstrated that ILC linacs made up of the new high gradient cavities, with targeted damping, would meet wakefield requirements for delivering high quality beams for particle physics studies. This result is important since any upgrade of the ILC from 500 GeV to 1 TeV centre of mass energy would make use of one of these high gradient cavity designs in the extension to the linacs. Beam dynamics in the CLIC beam delivery system (BDS), are also detailed. Simulations included deflecting mode Crab Cavities required to maximise collision luminosity when there is a crossing angle, and verify analytic results for the required deflecting voltage and tolerances to phase differences. The tolerance to crab cavity roll angle is found to be extremely tight, at 5.9 millidegrees. Additionally, results in this thesis uncover a problem with the BDS magnet layout which must be addressed.

Book excerpt: Precise collimation of the beam halo is required in the International Linear Collider (ILC) to prevent beam losses near the interaction region that could cause unacceptable backgrounds for the physics detector. The necessarily small apertures of the collimators lead to transverse wakefields that may result in beam deflections and increased emittance. A set of collimator wakefield measurements has previously been performed in the ASSET region of the SLAC Linac. We report on the next phase of this program, which is carried out at the recently commissioned End Station A (ESA) test facility at SLAC. Measurements of resistive and geometric wakefields using tapered collimators are compared with model predictions from MAFIA and GdfidL and with analytic calculations.

Book excerpt: We present a scheme for collimating large amplitude particles in the main linacs of a linear collider, by adding octupoles to the FODO lattice of the linac. The requirements on downstream collimation can in this way be greatly reduced or perhaps even eliminated. An analytic estimate of the amplitude at which particles are lost is made by calculating the separatrix of the fourth order resonance, and is in good agreement with the results of simulations. Simulations of particle distributions in the beam core and halo are presented, as well as alignment tolerances for the octupoles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The feasibility of future linear colliders depends on achieving very tight alignment and steering tolerances. All proposals (NLC, JLC, CLIC, TESLA and S-BAND) currently require a total emittance growth in the main linac of less than 30-100% [1]. This should be compared with a 100% emittance growth in the much smaller SLC linac [2]. Major advances in alignment and beam steering techniques beyond those used in the SLC are necessary for the next generation of linear colliders. In this paper, we present an experimental study of quadrupole alignment with a dispersion-free steering algorithm. A closely related method (wakefield-free steering) takes into account wakefield effects [3]. However, this method can not be studied at the SLC. The requirements for future linear colliders lead to new and unconventional ideas about alignment and beam steering. For example, no dipole correctors are foreseen for the standard trajectory correction in the NLC [4]; beam steering will be done by moving the quadrupole positions with magnet movers. This illustrates the close symbiosis between alignment, beam steering and beam dynamics that will emerge. It is no longer possible to consider the accelerator alignment as static with only a few surveys and realignments per year. The alignment in future linear colliders will be a dynamic process in which the whole linac, with thousands of beam-line elements, is aligned in a few hours or minutes, while the required accuracy of about 5 pm for the NLC quadrupole alignment [4] is a factor of 20 higher than in existing accelerators. The major task in alignment and steering is the accurate determination of the optimum beam-line position. Ideally one would like all elements to be aligned along a straight line. However, this is not practical. Instead a ''smooth curve'' is acceptable as long as its wavelength is much longer than the betatron wavelength of the accelerated beam. Conventional alignment methods are limited in accuracy by errors in the survey and the fiducials. Beam-based alignment methods ideally only depend upon the BPM resolution and generally provide much better precision. Many of those techniques are described in other contributions to this workshop. In this paper we describe our experiences with a dispersion-free steering algorithm for linacs. This algorithm was first suggested by Raubenheimer and Ruth in 1990 [5]. It h as been studied in simulations for NLC [5], TESLA [6], the S-BAND proposal [7] and CLIC [8]. The dispersion-free steering technique can be applied to the whole linac at once and returns the alignment (or trajectory) that minimizes the dispersive emittance growth of the beam. Thus it allows an extremely fast alignment of the beam-line. As we will show dispersion-free steering is only sensitive to quadrupole misalignments. Wakefield-free steering [3] as mentioned before is a closely related technique that minimizes the emittance growth caused by both dispersion and wakefields. Due to hardware limitations (i.e. insufficient relative range of power supplies) we could not study this method experimentally in the SLC. However, its systematics are very similar to those of dispersion-free steering. The studies of dispersion-free steering which are presented made extensive use of the unique potential of the SLC as the only operating linear collider. We used it to study the performance and problems of advanced beam-based optimization tools in a real beam-line environment and on a large scale. We should mention that the SLC has utilized beam-based alignment for years [9], using the difference of electron and positron trajectories. This method, however, cannot be used in future linear colliders. The goal of our work is to demonstrate the performance of advanced beam-based alignment techniques in linear colliders and to anticipate possible reality-related problems. Those can then be solved in the design state for the next generation of linear colliders.

Book excerpt: One of the factors that limited the performance of the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) was the number of particles per bunch with large betatron or energy amplitudes. We consider the equivalent problem for the Next Linear Collider (NLC) main X-band linacs. We evaluate the number of large-amplitude particles which can be expected due to scattering processes, wakefields, and magnet nonlinearities. We conclude that the number of particles in the beam halo from these sources can easily be accommodated by the planned post-linac collimation system.

Book excerpt: This note describes studies performed in the framework of the Collimation Task Force organized to support the work of the International Linear Collider Technical Review Committee. The post-linac beam-collimation systems in the TESLA, JLC/NLC and CLIC linear-collider designs are compared using the same computer code under the same assumptions. Their performance is quantified in terms of beam-halo and synchrotron-radiation collimation efficiency. The performance of the current designs varies across projects and does not always meet the original design goals. However, these comparisons suggest that achieving the required performance in a future linear collider is feasible. The post-TRC plans of the Collimation Task Force are outlined briefly in closing.

Book excerpt: The Next Linear Collider (NLC) requires a substantial system of beam collimators to minimize the halo-related backgrounds at the interaction point, provide machine protection against errant pulses, and limit radiation doses throughout the accelerator. In particular, the NLC design contains a complete 5-dimensional (x, x(prime), y, y(prime), energy) collimation system at the entrance and exit of the main linac; transverse collimators at the electron and positron sources, at the 250 MeV point in the injector linac, and immediately upstream of the damping rings; a series of collimators at points with substantial z-energy correlation for longitudinal collimation; and a final set of transverse and energy collimators in the final focus, a few hundred meters from the IP. We describe the systems above and estimate the intensity of the halo at each point, as well as the efficiency with which the halo is removed by the collimators.

Book excerpt: Synchrotron radiation, beam-gas scattering and beam halo interactions with collimators and other components in the ILC beam delivery system (BDS) would create fluxes of muons and other secondaries which could exceed the tolerable levels at a detector by a few orders of magnitude. It is shown that with a multi-stage collimation system, magnetized iron spoilers which fill the tunnel and a set of masks in the detector, one can hopefully meet the design goals. Results of modeling with the STRUCT and MARS15 codes of beam loss and energy deposition effects are presented in this paper. We focus on the collimation system and mask performance optimization, short- and long-term survivability of the critical components (spoilers, absorbers and magnets), dynamic heat loads and radiation levels in magnets and other components, and machine-related backgrounds in collider detectors.

We report on a series of experiments in which the resistive wakefield was measured in a series of tapered collimators, using the Collimator Wakefield beam test facility at SLAC. In order to separate the contributions of geometric and resistive wakefields, two sets of collimators with identical geometries but different resistivities were measured. The results are in agreement with the theoretical prediction for the high-resistivity (titanium) collimators, but in the case of low-resistivity (copper) collimators the resistive deflections appear to be substantially larger than predicted.
