Book excerpt: The SLAC two-mile linac has been upgraded to accelerate high current, low emittance electron and positron beams to be used in the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC). After the upgrade was completed, extensive beam studies were made to verify that the design criteria have been met. These tests involved the measurement of emittance, beam phase space orientation, energy dispersion, trajectory oscillations, bunch length, energy spectrum and wakefields. The methods, the systems and the data cross checks are compared for the various measurements. Implications for the next linear collider are discussed. 12 refs., 13 figs., 2 tabs.

Book excerpt: In this paper, we discuss some basic beam dynamics issues related to obtaining and preserving the luminosity of a next generation linear collider. The beams are extracted from a damping ring and compressed in length by the first bunch compressor. They are then accelerated in a preaccelerator linac up to an energy appropriate for injection into a high gradient linac. In many designs this pre-acceleration is followed by another bunch compression to reach a short bunch. After acceleration in the linac, the bunches are finally focused transversely to a small spot. 27 refs., 1 fig.

Beam dynamics plays a central role in the maximization of integrated luminosity. It is the major issue in the production of small beam sizes and low experimental backgrounds and is also an important factor in the production of particle numbers, in the acceleration process, and in the number of bunches. The beam dynamics effects on bunches which are extracted from the damping rings, accelerated in the linac, collimated, momentum analyzed, and finally delivered to the final focus are reviewed. The effects of bunch compression, transverse and longitudinal wakefields, BNS damping, energy definition, dispersion, emittance, bunch aspect ratio, feedback, and stability are all important. 11 refs., 1 tab.

Book excerpt: The international community is in agreement that a lepton collider in the TeV centre of mass energy range is required to leverage discoveries made at the Large Hadron Collider and expand the physics programme. Two future colliders are proposed. The International Linear Collider (ILC) will collide electron and positron bunches at a centre of mass energy of 500 GeV, upgradable to 1 TeV. The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is designed to reach 3 TeV. This thesis investigates the wakefields, which degrade the beam quality, and beam dynamics in the main linacs of the ILC, presenting the first direct comparison of beam dynamics for linacs made up of the alternative high gradient superconducting cavity designs - the Reentrant and Ichiro cavities. Higher order modes of the electromagnetic field in the cavities, which will be excited by the passage of the bunches, are calculated using finite difference and finite element techniques. A trapped dipole mode in the Ichiro cavity at 2.4498 GHz is identified. These modes are used as the basis for the beam dynamics studies. These simulations have demonstrated that ILC linacs made up of the new high gradient cavities, with targeted damping, would meet wakefield requirements for delivering high quality beams for particle physics studies. This result is important since any upgrade of the ILC from 500 GeV to 1 TeV centre of mass energy would make use of one of these high gradient cavity designs in the extension to the linacs. Beam dynamics in the CLIC beam delivery system (BDS), are also detailed. Simulations included deflecting mode Crab Cavities required to maximise collision luminosity when there is a crossing angle, and verify analytic results for the required deflecting voltage and tolerances to phase differences. The tolerance to crab cavity roll angle is found to be extremely tight, at 5.9 millidegrees. Additionally, results in this thesis uncover a problem with the BDS magnet layout which must be addressed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The component installation for the upgrade of the three-kilometer linac for the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC) was completed in late summer 1986. The system status and measurements of beam properties made during commissioning are described in this paper. In summary, a low-emittance electron beam from a damping ring has been accelerated through the linac and injected into the north SLC Arc with negligible loss. The maximum bunch intensity is 2.9 x 10 electrons/pulse. A peak particle energy of 53 GeV has been reached. Operation at 47 GeV is now routine. The energy and energy spectrum of the electron beam can be rapidly measured nondestructively at high energy. These signals will be used in a fast feedback system nearing completion. The electron beam can be centered in the accelerator to about 200 m rms. Slow feedback of the injection position and angle into the linac and injection into the north Arc are operational. Longitudinal and transverse wakefields have been measured and appear to be near expectations. Transverse position measurements at the end of the linac show a 120 m horizontal and a 30 m vertical (rms) jitter from pulse to pulse. The spot shape, including the transverse tails, also shows some jitter. The transverse position and shape fluctuations have several sources involving launch instabilities, chromatic effects, RF deflections and lattice mismatches. Continued improvements are expected. These parameter jitters would not preclude collisions. The measured invariant transverse emittances of the beam at 47 GeV are 2 x 10 V rm vertically and 12-25 x 10 V rm horizontally at 1 x 10 e . The horizontal emittance increases with beam intensity. Damped positrons have been injected into the linac, and trajectory correction is underway.
