Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The largest coastal alluvial-plain in Mexico lies along the southern Gulf Coast, almost entirely within the state of Tabasco. This plain is principally of fluvial origin, associated with the Mezcalapa and Usumacinta river systems. These two rivers, whose previous channel migrations have directly or indirectly produced most of the lowland landforms, currently share the major outlet to the Gulf, the Grijalva River. Skirting the gulfward edge of the Tabasco Plain is a narrow zone of coastal landforms comprised primarily of beach ridges plus a few groups of sand dunes. Systematic investigation of beach ridges includes profiles noting general configuration and dimension. Beaches are profiled to record sediment removal, migration, and accumulation over various time periods. Trenches and pits dug in accretionary portions of the beach profile reveal stratification sequences of inland-dipping foreset units. These deposits correlate with frequent winter-season storms, nortes, which raise Gulf levels and wave heights to construct a beach crest upon the winter beach. Intermittent washover deposition contributes sediment to the upper surface and lee side of the ridge to heighten and broaden it while producing a slow migration inland. Subsequent calm-weather accretion gradually widens the beach and eventually strands the beach ridge. Beach ridges are most numerous and the coastal zone widest where river channels course through the coastal topography and discharge into the Gulf. Adjacent to these channels, the ridge trends collectively arch seaward, fan-like, to produce a cuspate delta projecting into the Gulf. (Author).

Bordering the southernmost part of the Gulf of Mexico, these lowlands are hot and wet. They afford a laboratory in which to examine physical processes and living conditions within a humid tropical coastal environment. Geologically, the lowlands are composed of two distinct surfaces: (1) the Recent alluvial plain, made up of river deltas, flood plains, and beach deposits; and (2), farther inland, the Pleistocene alluvial surface of highly weathered stream-deposited sediments. The morphology of the Recent alluvial plain is a product of Mexico's two most voluminous rivers, the Grijalva-Mezcalapa and the Usumacinta. Several tropical vegetation formations, each with its particular faunal assemblage, once covered the Tabasco lowlands. Before its alteration by man a dense rain forest was the most extensive formation, followed in size by freshwater marsh in interlevee depressions. Despite a seemingly unfavorable environment, the Tabasco deltaic plain was well populated in pre-Columbian times, as evidenced by archeology and early Spanish accounts. After 400 years of demographic and economic decline, the lowlands have only recently regained population densities and economic importance comparable to those before the Conquest. (Author).

Some 30 municipalities are in a coastal territory of almost 2,000 linear kilometers, from the oil fields of the Gulf of Mexico to the world-renowned beaches of Cancún, just north of the second-largest barrier reef in the world. The peninsula's natural assets also include notable Mayan temples. With poverty far from eliminated, and with economic development opportunities beckoning in agriculture, manufacturing, and hydrocarbon development, the region is under growing risks from environmental hazards. Oil spills, hurricanes, coral bleaching, extreme flooding, and erosion have all been experienced in this region over the past decade. Based on preliminary identification of environmental priorities, Opportunities for Environmentally Healthy, Inclusive, and Resilient Growth in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula explores selected topics that aim to inform decision making in the region. A general context of integrated coastal zone management is used to explore issues, constraints, and potential solutions, and the role of geomorphology is examined with a view to identifying how shore management plans can contribute to improved coastal management. Economic studies find that the main environmental health risks in the peninsula result in more than 1,000 premature deaths every year and in more than 9.36 million days lost to illnesses. These risks generate substantial economic losses, representing 2.2†“3.3 percent of gross regional income. Scenarios relating to the economic cost of extreme weather events generate similar levels of damages: 1.4†“1.5 percent of GDP in 2020 and 1.6†“2.3 percent of GDP in 2050. A social accounting matrix examines the social and environmental interconnectedness to the various parts of the economy, and an institutional analysis considers the mandates of existing institutions in the states, and of the contribution that regulatory measures may make to environmentally sustainable development without undermining economic growth prospects.
