Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named a Best Book of 2021 by NPR This inspirational memoir serves as a call to action from prison reform activist Yusef Salaam, of the Exonerated Five, that will inspire us all to turn our stories into tools for change in the pursuit of racial justice. They didn't know who they had. So begins Yusef Salaam telling his story. No one's life is the sum of the worst things that happened to them, and during Yusef Salaam's seven years of wrongful incarceration as one of the Central Park Five, he grew from child to man, and gained a spiritual perspective on life. Yusef learned that we're all "born on purpose, with a purpose." Despite having confronted the racist heart of America while being "run over by the spiked wheels of injustice," Yusef channeled his energy and pain into something positive, not just for himself but for other marginalized people and communities. Better Not Bitter is the first time that one of the now Exonerated Five is telling his individual story, in his own words. Yusef writes his narrative: growing up Black in central Harlem in the '80s, being raised by a strong, fierce mother and grandmother, his years of incarceration, his reentry, and exoneration. Yusef connects these stories to lessons and principles he learned that gave him the power to survive through the worst of life's experiences. He inspires readers to accept their own path, to understand their own sense of purpose. With his intimate personal insights, Yusef unpacks the systems built and designed for profit and the oppression of Black and Brown people. He inspires readers to channel their fury into action, and through the spiritual, to turn that anger and trauma into a constructive force that lives alongside accountability and mobilizes change. This memoir is an inspiring story that grew out of one of the gravest miscarriages of justice, one that not only speaks to a moment in time or the rage-filled present, but reflects a 400-year history of a nation's inability to be held accountable for its sins. Yusef Salaam's message is vital for our times, a motivating resource for enacting change. Better, Not Bitter has the power to soothe, inspire and transform. It is a galvanizing call to action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In too many districts, evaluation of teachers ensures competence but does little or nothing to encourage and support expertise. In this thought-provoking and groundbreaking book, Tony Frontier and Paul Mielke address this issue head-on, combining the conceptual and the practical by offering a compelling vision of teacher growth, along with nearly three dozen step-by-step protocols for working with teachers. They present a powerful rationale for reconceptualizing teacher evaluation by creating a balanced system of three equally important components: * Reliable and valid evaluation. * Empowering and focused supervision. * Meaningful and purposeful reflection. Each component is discussed in terms of its purpose, premise, processes, practices, and payoffs. Revealing examples based on the authors’ experiences in classrooms across the country show what evaluation, supervision, and reflection look like when they’re not done well--and what they could look like if done more effectively. Providing insight and inspiration, Making Teachers Better, Not Bitter paves a clear path to better teaching and helps you acknowledge and support the hard work that teachers do every day to make learning come alive for their students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written to shine light on the many devastating situations people face on a daily basis. On average, every 40 seconds someone somewhere has committed suicide because they couldnt find a reason to go on. The stories in this book are non fiction and allow readers to understand that things happen, people go through hardships, and situations that lead them to a dead end road. People lose relationships, friends, jobs, and loved ones on a daily basis. Everyone has a story; thus everyone has a past which ultimately hinders their future due to ones inability to let go of past problems. Its not easy; nor is it hard to let go. One must find the courage to know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and it isnt death; it is HOPE. Finding reasons to continue striving and believingis finding strength within yourselves that you never knew existed. Never allow your past to hinder your futures because the people and (or) things that have brought you to a halt, will not stop functioning because you chose to shut down. Never allow anyone to make you BITTER; but allow those situations to be the reason you are BITTER then yesterday.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From National Book Award finalist Akwaeke Emezi comes a companion novel to PET that explores both the importance and cost of social revolution--and how youth lead the way. Bitter is an aspiring artist who has been invited to cultivate her talents at a special school in the town of Lucille. Surrounded by other creative teens, she can focus on her painting--though she hides a secret from everyone around her. Meanwhile, the streets of Lucille are filled with social unrest. This is Lucille before the Revolution. A place of darkness and injustice. A place where a few ruling elites control the fates of the many. The young people of Lucille know they deserve better--they aren't willing to settle for this world that the adults say is "just the way things are." They are protesting, leading a much-needed push for social change. But Bitter isn't sure where she belongs--in the art studio or in the streets. And if she does find a way to help the Revolution while being true to who she is, she must also ask: what are the costs? Acclaimed novelist Akwaeke Emezi looks at the power of youth, protest, and art in this timely and provocative novel, a companion to National Book Award Finalist Pet. Praise for PET: "The word hype was invented to describe books like this." --Refinery29 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST "[A] beautiful, genre-expanding debut. . . . Pet is a nesting doll of creative possibilities." --The New York Times "Like [Madeleine] L'Engle, Akwaeke Emezi asks questions of good and evil and agency, all wrapped up in the terrifying and glorious spectacle of fantastical theology." --NPR

Book excerpt: It is with great appreciation to my first cousin Mary Ruth (Ault) Wright, (who has an intense interest in genealogy and dedication to accuracy), for completing this book. Without her this book would never have been written. Our parents, John and Edna Rector, were truly great parents! But for children, it takes years to fully appreciate the sacrifices parents make. They had the courage to move to Oklahoma with five young children in 1912. Oklahoma had just become a state in 1907). Then in 1924 the family with six children returned to Illinoisin a model T Ford truck so the children would be nearer to schools. As a teenager visiting Auntie Mayme Rector in Smithfield,I became interested in our family heritage. She could only say that the Rectors came from Ohio.To kindle my interest, she gave me notes about her forefathers. After WWII, my interest in our family history was revived. While looking at a map of VirginiaI saw "Rectortown". I wrote a letter to "The Eldest Rector" in Rectortown,VirginiaThere were no "Rectors" in Rectortown. However, the postmistress forwarded the letter to a Mr. Phillips, whose wife was a Rector, and living nearby in Middleburg. With this connection, I learned of Germanna, Germantown, and Rectortown. In Dr. Salmans' "History of the Descendants of John Jacob Rector" published in 1936, he states that "They were hard-working, God fearing, six footers, each with a family, and brought with them their highly educated pastor and his family." He was of the German Reformed Church. For those of us who are short in stature, this phenomenon could be attributed to Margaret Ann Cochran, wife of Elijah Rector (1763-1828) parents of pioneer John Rector (1801-1869). Margaret Ann was short in stature and had red hair. We are grateful to those who contributed articles for this book and a special "thank you" to Michael Lee Rector, Robert Evans Rector, and Jon Wayne Rector who arranged for the publication and distribution of "The Rector Family Heritage". Mary Ruth and I hope that you will enjoy this book, and with this knowledge be proud and appreciative of our forefathers. Leo Harris Rector Champaign,Illinois May 2003
