Book Synopsis B/ordering Space by : Henk van Houtum
Download or read book B/ordering Space written by Henk van Houtum and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of globalization, numerous social scientists are turning to concepts of mobility, fluidity and hybridity to characterize a presumed de-territorialization and de-bordering of contemporary social and economic relations. This book brings together a select group of internationally renowned human geographers to explore the use of these concepts in relation to space, place and territory. In doing so, they (re)situate the subject of borders as active socio-spatial processes from a variety of theoretical perspectives. The contributors link debates on borders to discussions within the wider sphere of cultural studies, notably those addressing themes of migration, post-colonialism, the formation of national/regional identities and radical democratic practice. The chapters focus on those discursive practices that constitute 'bordered' geographical entities in the first instance through differentiated regimes of discourse. The book thus transcends the narrower field of borderlands research by building bridges to other domains of enquiry within political and human geography.

Book Synopsis Landscape and Power in Geographical Space as a Social-Aesthetic Construct by : Olaf Kühne
Download or read book Landscape and Power in Geographical Space as a Social-Aesthetic Construct written by Olaf Kühne and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the power definiteness of landscape from a social constructivist perspective with a particular focus on the importance of aesthetic concepts of landscape in development. It seeks to answer the question of how societal notions of landscape emerge, how they are individually updated and how these ideas affect the use and design of physical space. It also analyzes how physical manifestations of societal activity impact on understandings of individual and societal landscapes and addresses the essential aspect of the social construction of landscape, cultural specificity, which in turn is discussed in the context of the expansion of a western landscape concept. The book offers an unprecedented, comprehensive and detailed examination of societal power relations in the context of landscape development. The numerous case studies from the physical manifestation of modern spatial planning in the United States, the power discourses concerning the design of model railway landscapes, and the medial production of stereotypical landscape notions shed light on the complex and multilayered interactions of collective and individual landscape references. It is a valuable resource for geographers, sociologists, landscape architects, landscape planners and philosophers.
Book Synopsis Doing Anthropology in Wartime and War Zones by : Reinhard Johler
Download or read book Doing Anthropology in Wartime and War Zones written by Reinhard Johler and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2014-03-31 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World War I marks a well-known turning point in anthropology, and this volume is the first to examine the variety of forms it took in Europe. Distinct national traditions emerged and institutes were founded, partly due to collaborations with the military. Researchers in the cultural sciences used war zones to gain access to »informants«: prisoner-of-war and refugee camps, occupied territories, even the front lines. Anthropologists tailored their inquiries to aid the war effort, contributed to interpretations of the war as a »struggle« between »races«, and assessed the »warlike« nature of the Balkan region, whose crises were key to the outbreak of the Great War.
Download or read book Past Landscapes written by Annette Haug and published by . This book was released on 2018-12-14 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Past Landscapes presents theoretical and practical attempts of scholars and scientists, who were and are active within the Kiel Graduate School "Human Development in Landscapes" (GSHDL), in order to disentangle a wide scope of research efforts on past landscapes. Landscapes are understood as products of human-environmental interaction. At the same time, they are arenas, in which societal and cultural activities as well as receptions of environments and human developments take place. Thus, environmental processes are interwoven into human constraints and advances. This book presents theories, concepts, approaches and case studies dealing with human development in landscapes. On the one hand, it becomes evident that only an interdisciplinary approach can cover the manifold aspects of the topic. On the other hand, this also implies that the very different approaches cannot be reduced to a simplistic uniform definition of landscape. This shortcoming proves nevertheless to be an important strength. The umbrella term 'landscape' proves to be highly stimulating for a large variety of different approaches. The first part of our book deals with a number of theories and concepts, the second part is concerned with approaches to landscapes, whereas the third part introduces case studies for human development in landscapes. As intended by the GSHDL, the reader might follow our approach to delve into the multi-faceted theories, concepts and practices on past landscapes: from events, processes and structures in environmental and produced spaces to theories, concepts and practices concerning past societies.

Download or read book The Guiltless written by Hermann Broch and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Murder, lust, shame, hypocrisy, and suicide are at the center of The Guiltless, Hermann Broch's postwar novel about the disintegration of European society in the three decades preceding the Second World War. Broch's characters - an apathetic man who can barely remember his own name; a high-school teacher and his lover who return from the brink of a suicide pact to carry on a dishonest relationship; Zerline, a lady's maid who enslaves her mistresses, prostitutes the young country girl Melitta, and metes out her own justice against the "empty wickedness" of her betters - are trapped in their indifference, prisoners of a sort of "wakeful somnolence." These men and women may mention the "imbecile Hitler," yet they prefer a nap or sexual encounter to any social action. Broch thought the kind of ethical perversity and political apathy exhibited by his characters paved the way for Nazism. He believed in the purifying power of writing and hoped that by revealing Germany's underlying guilt he could purge indifference from his own and future generations. In The Guiltless, Broch captures how apathy and ennui - very human failings - evolve into something dehumanizing and dangerous." --Book Jacket.
Book Synopsis Place, Space and Hermeneutics by : Bruce B. Janz
Download or read book Place, Space and Hermeneutics written by Bruce B. Janz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-29 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the hermeneutics of place, raising questions about central issues such as textuality, dialogue, and play. It discusses the central figures in the development of hermeneutics and place, and surveys disciplines and areas in which a hermeneutic approach to place has been fruitful. It covers the range of philosophical hermeneutic theory, both within philosophy itself as well as from other disciplines. In doing so, the volume reflects the state of theorization on these issues, and also looks forward to the implications and opportunities that exist. Philosophical hermeneutics has fundamentally altered philosophy’s approach to place. Issues such as how we dwell in place, how place is imagined, created, preserved, and lost, and how philosophy itself exists in place have become central. While there is much research applying hermeneutics to place, there is little which both reflects on that heritage and critically analyzes a hermeneutic approach to place. This book fills that void by offering a sustained analysis of the central elements, major figures, and disciplinary applications of hermeneutics and place.

Book Synopsis Urban Ecosystems by : Jürgen Breuste
Download or read book Urban Ecosystems written by Jürgen Breuste and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-29 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook on urban ecosystems answers important questions about the ecological structure, functions and socio-ecological development of cities worldwide. Based on how cities are developing today in an increasingly urbanized world, it explains ecological challenges for cities of the 21st century such as resource efficiency, climate change, moderation of quality of life and resilience. The book combines theories of urban development and ecology with practical applications and case studies, thus identifying potential for improvement and examples of good ecological urban development worldwide. It shows that cities are by far not only problem areas but also offer great potential for a good life and that the various urban ecosystems can make a considerable contribution to this. The "eco-city" is thus not a utopia, but a real goal that can be pursued step by step in a targeted manner, taking into account the local and regional context. Four renowned urban ecologists have contributed their specific experience in sub-areas without losing sight of the big picture. Jürgen Breuste is an urban ecologist and works at the Paris Lodron University in Salzburg, Austria, on the topics of sustainable urban development, urban biodiversity, ecosystem services and eco-cities. Dagmar Haase is Landschaftsökologin and works at the Humboldt University of Berlin on urban ecosystem services and land use modeling. Stephan Pauleit is a landscape planner and works at the Technical University of Munich on strategies for the sustainable development of urban landscapes. Martin Sauerwein is a geographer and works at the University of Hildesheim on geo-ecology in cultural landscapes, geoarchaeology and soil protection. The textbook addresses a broad audience of students, teachersand also to practitioners in the fields of ecology, urban ecology, urban development, sustainability, urban geography, nature and landscape conservation, spatial planning, landscape ecology, social sciences and urban studies. The numerous photos and graphics, many of them in four colors, as well as clear tables illustrate the facts. Case studies, examples and explanations allow a deeper insight. Questions at the end of each chapter allow the progress of knowledge to be checked, and a comprehensive bibliography for each chapter provides further studies. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Stadtökosysteme by Jürgen Breuste published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2016. Book Synopsis Making Transformative Geographies by : Benedikt Schmid
Download or read book Making Transformative Geographies written by Benedikt Schmid and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the light of social and environmental unsustainability and injustice, the continuing attachment to the idea that a growth-based economy is reconcilable with human prosperity and ecological limits seems increasingly implausible. Tracing and dissecting the complexities of social change, »Making Transformative Geographies« speaks about the development of visions, alternatives, and strategies for a radical transformation beyond accumulation and growth. Covering an empirical sample of 24 eco-social organizations, projects, and groupings in the city of Stuttgart (Germany), the book drills down into the social, spatial, and strategic dimensions of transformation. It advances a conceptually and empirically grounded assessment of the possibilities and limitations of community activism and civic engagement for shifting transformative geographies towards a degrowth trajectory.
