Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, the footprints of history fell softly on Jacksonville, Arkansas. Situated 12 miles northeast of Little Rock and the Arkansas River, the Jacksonville area's first white settlers came to the Arkansas Territory in the early 1800s. Most traveled by the rough Southwest Trail from Missouri or the Military Road from Memphis, which also saw many Native Americans passing on their Trail of Tears. In 1836, Arkansas was admitted to the Union as a slave state. Registered as a town June 29, 1870, the coming of the railroad brought more people to Jacksonville. However, little changed here from 1870 to 1930, except women's hemlines, the arrival of automobiles, the telephone, and electricity. The rural community of about two hundred people built homes, raised cotton, and established churches and schools. Businesses prospered, and family names grew. Still, Jacksonville's main street remained unpaved. Improvements and growth began when a Civilian Conservation Corp camp was established during the Depression. Later, the Jacksonville Ordinance Plant employed thousands during WW II, and in 1955 the Little Rock Air Force Base was built, eventually swelling the population to almost 30,000 today.

Book excerpt: Imagine your nation has suddenly been thrown into an unwanted war, and you are told that, as a reservist, you will join the brigade of your fellow citizen-soldiers/sailors who are already in place aboard giant steel behemoths, bristling with enormous guns, sailing in company with many other armed warships...Others are in speedy, but thin-skinned aircraft with little chance of returning alive from each harrowing mission...Still others climb inside armored, tracked monsters which clank inexorably toward a final clash with those who brought war and destruction to your friends and family...But docked among the enormous steel warships, all stretching nearly a thousand feet long, and taller than many of the buildings in your hometown, is a wooden ship, barely a hundred feet long, and covered with a material that not only wouldn't stop a .22 caliber bullet from the rifle with which you've hunted squirrels, it will even ignite when flame is applied...This is your home until peace is declared...

Book Synopsis Historic Hiking Trails by : Steve Rajtar
Download or read book Historic Hiking Trails written by Steve Rajtar and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-10-03 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 900 hiking trails in the United States take hikers along routes or past sites of historical importance and offer commemorative embroidered patches or other souvenirs of the outing. These trails allow hikers to gain a new appreciation for history and actually experience it, instead of only reading about it--and have something to show for their hike. The first comprehensive guide to those trails, this work covers routes in all fifty states and the District of Columbia as well as interstate trails. The book categorizes each as historic, meaning that it played some significant role in history; historical, meaning that it takes the hiker by or into buildings or sites that have some relationship to a significant person or event, but do not themselves figure in history; nature or scenic, because of the wildlife or scenery available along the way that can be viewed along with the historical site; or recreational, meaning that the trail was established for the long-distance hiker and history buff. Each entry also tells who the trail's sponsor is, if alternate means of transportation are allowed, location, length, route, type of terrain, what type of awards are given and any associated costs, registration requirements, and sites along the trail.
