Download or read book An Iron Horse Saga written by Carl B. Sutter and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-06-25 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Iron Horse Saga is not a traditonal romantic novel with a sultry love triangle but rather a true story of an adventurous cross country motorcycle ride by a deeply in love husband and wife. A deep bond developed between the Rider and Iron Horse during the ride's impossible conditions. Normally a 5,200 mile Coast to Coast ride should be a simple test of Rider endurance. This ride was anything but normal! A transplanted skier from Upstate New York, the author moved to Florida to take advantage of the warmer climate and pursue his 2nd passion of motorycle riding. The author's motorcycle riding experience spans 50 years and over 500,000 miles. A cross country motorcycle ride between the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean was an idea borne by the author to combine his passion for motorcycle riding with an opportunity to raise money to benefit children in the community. The Kiwanis Club of Southeast Volusia County sponsored the Coast to Coast Benefit Ride for Children.
Book Synopsis The Battery and the Boiler by : R. M. Ballantyne
Download or read book The Battery and the Boiler written by R. M. Ballantyne and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2022-04-06 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1883, ‘The Battery and the Boiler’ by R.M. Ballantyne is a fascinating nautical adventure story. Born aboard a ship in the midst of a powerful storm, and fascinated by electricity due to the circumstances of his birth, young Robin Wright was always destined for a life on the open sea. His two interests collide when young Robin is asked to help lay powerful submarine cables and so he sets sail on the experience of a lifetime. A charming and intriguing tale from the popular children’s author. R.M. Ballantyne (1825-1894) was a Scottish artist and prolific author of mostly children’s fiction. Born in Edinburgh, Ballantyne was the ninth of ten children. At the age of 16 Ballantyne moved to Canada, where he worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company, travelling all over the country to trade for fur. He returned to Scotland in 1847 following the death of his father, and it was then that he began his literary career in earnest, writing over 100 children’s adventure books over the course of his life. Stories such as ‘The Coral Island’ and ‘The Young Fur Traders’ were hugely popular, and many of them drew on his own experiences of travelling throughout Canada. A stickler for detail, Ballantyne continued to travel widely to research the backgrounds and settings for his exciting stories. His tales became an inspiration for authors of the future, including ‘Treasure Island’ novelist Robert Louis Stevenson. Ballantyne spent the latter period of his life living in London and Italy for the sake of his health. He died in Rome in 1894 at the age of 68.
Book Synopsis Bad Boys and Wicked Women by : Daniela Hahn
Download or read book Bad Boys and Wicked Women written by Daniela Hahn and published by Herbert Utz Verlag. This book was released on 2017-02-07 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume assembles 13 essays as the result of a workshop for international doctoral and post-doctoral researchers in Old Norse studies, which was held at the Institute for Nordic Philology at LMU in Munich in December 2015. The contributions’ focus lies on different aspects of ›bad‹ or ›evil‹ characters in saga literature, and they give testimony to the broad literary variety such figures display in Old Norse texts. The “Antagonists and Troublemakers in Old Norse Literature” are here explored in their diversity, ranging from their literary psychology to their characteristics which often challenge gender norms. The contributions discuss the narrative strategies of presenting these characters to the audience, both positively and negatively. Furthermore, they analyse how the central paradox of evil and its dependence on context is realised in various ways in Old Norse literature.

Book Synopsis Anglo-Saxon England: Volume 30 by : Michael Lapidge
Download or read book Anglo-Saxon England: Volume 30 written by Michael Lapidge and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-07-12 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pre-eminence of Anglo-Saxon England in its field can be seen as a result of its encouragement of interdisciplinary approaches to the study of all aspects of Anglo-Saxon culture. Thus this volume includes an important assessment of the correspondence of St Boniface, in which it is shown that the unusually formulaic nature of Boniface's letters is best understood as a reflex of the saint's familiarity with vernacular composition. A wide-ranging historical contextualization of The Letter of Alexander to Aristotle illuminates the way English readers of the later tenth century may have defined themselves in contradistinction to the monstrous unknown, and a fresh reading of the gendering of female portraiture in a famous illustrated manuscript of the Psychomachia of Prudentius (CCCC 23) shows the independent ways in which Anglo-Saxon illustrators were able to respond to their models. The usual comprehensive bibliography of the previous year's publications rounds off the book; and a full index of the contents of volumes 26-30 is provided. (Previous indexes have appeared in volumes 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25.)

Book Synopsis Revisiting the Poetic Edda by : Paul Acker
Download or read book Revisiting the Poetic Edda written by Paul Acker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing alive the dramatic poems of Old Norse heroic legend, this new collection offers accessible, ground-breaking and inspiring essays which introduce and analyse the exciting legends of the two doomed Helgis and their valkyrie lovers; the dragon-slayer Sigurðr; Brynhildr the implacable shield-maiden; tragic Guðrún and her children; Attila the Hun (from a Norse perspective!); and greedy King Fróði, whose name lives on in Tolkien’s Frodo. The book provides a comprehensive introduction to the poems for students, taking a number of fresh, theoretically-sophisticated and productive approaches to the poetry and its characters. Contributors bring to bear insights generated by comparative study, speech act and feminist theory, queer theory and psychoanalytic theory (among others) to raise new, probing questions about the heroic poetry and its reception. Each essay is accompanied by up-to-date lists of further reading and a contextualisation of the poems or texts discussed in critical history. Drawing on the latest international studies of the poems in their manuscript context, and written by experts in their individual fields, engaging with the texts in their original language and context, but presented with full translations, this companion volume to The Poetic Edda: Essays on Old Norse Mythology (Routledge, 2002) is accessible to students and illuminating for experts. Essays also examine the afterlife of the heroic poems in Norse legendary saga, late medieval Icelandic poetry, the nineteenth-century operas of Richard Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, and the recently published (posthumous) poem by Tolkien, The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún.
