But one day, when he sees a husband murder his wife in a fit of rage in one of the rooms, the photographer turns to detective Janardan Maity to confess his own crimes, so that the killer can be brought to book. With his dear friend Prakash Ray by his side, Maity investigates this seemingly simple case, only to realize that not everything is as it seems.

Although no one from his battalion had seen him get killed, no one had been able to locate his body. And so, the military declared him 'Missing, Believed Killed'the ambiguous status assigned to soldiers when their death cannot be confirmed. However, six years after the war, the Indian government changed its mind. The Ministry of External Affairs announced in Parliament that Indian intelligence agencies have reason to believe that Pakistan had not been truthful when it handed over the list of Indian POWs in its custody. It went on to state the names of at least forty Indian soldiers still believed to be in Pakistani custody and one of the names was Kamal Bakshi's. This book has been written by his nephew Shivalik Bakshi. It is his story, recreated from his letters, diaries, recollections of those who crossed paths with him and published accounts of the Battle of Chhamb.
Book Synopsis Memorable War Stories by : Ranbir Singh Gp Capt
Download or read book Memorable War Stories written by Ranbir Singh Gp Capt and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memorable War Stories is a collection of 27 war stories and incidents placing on record the exciting exploits of our own fliers of the Indian Air Force and the intrepid fighters of the Army and Navy operating in our own environment. All the stories/incidents recorded in the book are true and factually correct, and are based on research, first person accounts, and published stories carried by different newspapers and magazines over a period of time. Although most of the names of the crews have been clipped down to their squadron nicknames, nevertheless they will be quite identifiable to their colleagues and contemporaries. The book has been fictionalised to an extent to make it readable and bring in the human angle, but there is no compromise on the factual details. The war stories and the other incidents cover a wide spectrum beginning with the Kashmir operations and race the reader through the 1962 Sino-Indian Frontier War, the Twenty Two Fateful Days of the 1965 Indo-Pak Conflict, the Fourteen Days 1971 war, and not forgetting the Kargil Operation Vijay. The book has been written in an easy and fluid style which makes it immensely readable, and the simple language though with a defence flavour should find favour with the men-in-uniform as well as civilians. It is a welcome addition to the books on defence themes.

Book excerpt: The 23 Division was the only formation whose performance was appreciated even by the enemy. Thus the following was the opinion of various Indians about the war performance of 23 Division and General Eftikhar:-"Major General Iftikhar Khan, the Divisional Commander, showed skill and determination in carrying out his misison. (58) "The enemy commander showed commendable flexibility. Having achieved surprise by using the northern approach, he switched to the south when he found himself firmly checked at Mandiala crossings" (59)"The permanent loss of tactically and economically valuable territory on the west bank of Munawar Tawi was the most serious reverse suffered in the 1971 war" (60)In the Second World War one percent of the pilots of the US Air Force were responsible for shooting down in air fights some 40% of enemy war planes. (61)During the decisive battle of Assaye the British Infantry Regiment 74th Foot did bulk of the fighting and its casualties amounted to 501 whereas the other European casualties of all other units were just 143. (62)In 1857 the British casualties at the siege of Delhi exceeded British casualties at all other battles in 1857 totalled by some 200 additional casualties. (63)it is a fact of history that very often bulk of the fighting is done by a qualitatively superior force; as we have seen in the above mentioned instances. For 1971 war also strictly keeping the facts in mind almost half of casualties sustained by the army on the western front were borne by the valiant 23 Division. Thus while the total army casualties on the western front were 4958 (64)those of 23 Division alone were 2216 (65)On the other hand at times it has been stated that 23 Division could not have captured Palllanwala since the Indians were too strong east of Tawi. These are writers about whom Clausewitz warned us long go when he said:- Not to be led astray and intimidated by the danger of which thirty years later people still wrote and spoke". Book excerpt: The advent of the cannon many centuries ago added a new dimension to warfare, and soon became the weapon of choice of the Kings and Emperors. Since then artillery has evolved into a battle-winning factor, often being the determinant between success and failure. This book covers five great artillery battles fought in four continents over 136 years. The Battle of Gettysburg (1 to 3 Jun 1863) is the most 'written about' battle of the US Civil War. The Battle of Vimy Ridge (9 to 12 April 1917), which saw the Canadian Corps fight as one entity for the first time, commenced with the greatest artillery barrage in history (till then) - 983 guns! In the Battle of Bir Hacheim (Point 171) (27 May 1942) 2 Indian Field Regiment firing over 'open sights' knocked out 56 tanks of the German Afrika Korps, led by General (later Field Marshal) Erwin Rommel. The Battle of Chhamb (3 to 17 December 1971) recounts what was perhaps the toughest and most intensely fought battle of the Indo-Pakistan War. The Battles of Tololing and Tiger Hill fought during the Kargil Conflict in the summer of 1999 saw the Indian guns engaging targets at heights of 16000 feet!

Book Synopsis India's Armed Forces by : Ashok Krishna
Download or read book India's Armed Forces written by Ashok Krishna and published by Lancer Publishers. This book was released on 1998 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India's Armed Forces stand as a deterrent to external aggression, regional fragmentation, separatism, or secession. They have always carried out their duties with competent professionalism though not seeking much influence in policy areas outside their beat. India's Armed Forces: Fifty Years of War and Peace is their story in the post-independence period. Starting with the trauma of partition, the Armed Forces have continuously engaged in a wide variety of operations. There is perhaps no such parallel in contemporary times of similar uninterrupted employment. The book deals with all essential aspects of India's four wars providing some new insights. It particularly highlights the contributions of the Armed Forces in countering insurgency and towards international peacekeeping. The author captures the environment in which the Armed Forces have operated and the politico-military and strategic circumstances obtaining at various periods of India's turbulent history. The emphasis throughout is on these macro issues and the lessons learned.
