Book excerpt: Extrait de la couverture : "Debunking the myths about domestic violence - in defence of battered women who kill : *why do men abuse?, *why don't abused women leave them?, *why do some women kill?, *and why they qualify for legal defence? The Justice for Women Campaign was initiated in 1998 by the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation. As its name suggests, the campaign seeks to promote the just and equitable treatments of battered women who have killed their abusive partners. The Campaign has three main goals : reforming legal defences to murder and sentencing guidelines ; establishing a review mechanism to allow for the early release of women who have killed abusive partners ; and providing legal and support services to women assisted by the Campaign."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study examines self-reported perceptions regarding the reasons why women in Tarrant County returned to their abuser. A survey was implemented in a North Texas domestic violence shelter in which clients answered a series of questions pertaining to why they left their abuser in the past based on ten recidivism variables previous research found influential. Three statistical analyses were performed to determine if dependency on or for their abuser resulted in the subjects returning to their abusive relationship. Contrary to the hypothesized prediction battered women were found to return to an abuser for reasons other than dependency. However, it was found that there was a positive and significant statistical relationship between women who have returned to an abusive relationship three or more times and those women who lacked adequate alternatives and were in what might be considered dire financial need.

Book excerpt: This moving book reshapes our understanding of the nature of woman abuse and makes a major contribution to a key issue for feminist campaigning and theory. The past 25 years of research on battered' women has focused on the psychological, sociological and political conditions which contribute to violence, and on women's reasons for staying with violent and abusive partners. The author goes beyond the discourse of victims' and survivors' to offer new insights into the very specific and multifaceted nature of the abuses women experience - "emotional "as well as physical. Drawing on firsthand accounts, Kirkwood sheds new light both on the dynamics of abuse which afford abusers control over women and the resources and knowledge women draw upon to re-empower themselves. Examining first the nature of abuse and then the issues confronted by a woman after she has left an abusive relationship, Kirkwood finds that women's experiences of society after leaving abusive partners are highly interrelated. She develops the concept of a web' to explain how the different elements of abuse connect to make up the experiences of abused women.
