Book excerpt: The failure of the May 1980 Quebec referendum on sovereignty and the ratification in 1982 of a Canadian constitution, over Quebec's vehement objection but with the acquiescence of all other provinces, would appear to indicate that the likelihood of Quebec's independence has been sharply reduced, if not eliminated. Not so, is the considered judgment

Book Synopsis The Territorial Dimension Of Politics by : Ivo D. Duchacek
Download or read book The Territorial Dimension Of Politics written by Ivo D. Duchacek and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comparative study examines the dialectical tensions between global and regional interdependence and the fragmentation of humankind into territorial entities. Political authority may remain territory-bound, but borders increasingly are penetrated by pollutants, individuals, noncentral governments in search of foreign trade and investment, and transnational corporations, as well as the traditional exchanges of trade, media, and culture. The result of these transborder flows, accelerated by new technologies, is a new variety of international relations among “perforated sovereignties.†Dr. Duchacek analyzes the territorial organization of political authority in both democratic and authoritarian frameworks as well as in unitary and federal systems. Case studies focus on new forms of transborder interactions between neighboring countries, especially in North America and in Western Europe. The book is of major interest to scholars in the fields of political science and political economy. Quotations from a variety of political theorists and practitioners, illustrative diagrams, and maps make the book suitable for students of comparative politics, international relations, comparative federalism, and public policy.
Download or read book Remaining Loyal written by David McGrane and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When social democratic politicians in the 1990s moderated their ideas and policies as part of a turn towards the "third way," they were assailed as traitors to the cause. Remaining Loyal demonstrates that while third way social democrats in Quebec and Saskatchewan supplemented certain social democratic ideas with more right-wing economic programs, their public policies remained true to the original spirit of social democracy. Drawing on a range of archival resources, David McGrane traces the evolution of social democracy in Quebec and Saskatchewan from their respective origins in social Catholic thought and agrarian protest movements at the turn of the twentieth century to the most recent Parti Québécois and New Democratic Party governments. In doing so, he reconstructs the public policies of traditional social democracy from the postwar era and the third way in the 1990s and early 2000s and finds both differences and continuities. McGrane contends that remaining loyal to core social democratic values is exactly what differentiates the third way from neo-liberalism in Saskatchewan and Quebec. The first historical comparison of social democracy in Saskatchewan and Quebec, Remaining Loyal challenges how we think about the recent ideological evolution of left-wing parties in Canada and the rest of the world.
Book Synopsis Targeting High-growth Industry by : Roy Edwin George
Download or read book Targeting High-growth Industry written by Roy Edwin George and published by IRPP. This book was released on 1983 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the back cover: The question of an industrial strategy for Canada has had a prominent place in Canadian debate for many years. Most recently, there have been several advocates for adoption in Canada of a strategy of "picking winners". This means identifying and providing government support to industries with a high growth potential. As a corollary, it means not providing support to industries deemed to be "non-winners"....Professor George has approached the question by undertaking an examination of Canadian experience to date along with an examination of the experiences several other countries have had with a strategy of targetting high-growth industries. He brings to light information Canadian policy makers should take into account if they contemplate adopting such a strategy for Canada.

Book Synopsis Planning and the Economy by : Hugh Thorburn
Download or read book Planning and the Economy written by Hugh Thorburn and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since World War II, the way economic policy has been formed both in Canada and abroad has changed radically. This book shows that the course taken in Canada has much to do with the crisis in the Canadian economy in the post-war period. Thornburn examines the response of other Western nations to the changing economic order of the postwar world, and then turns to an analysis of Canadian economic policy-making at the federal level and in all ten provinces. Thorburn points to the need for a central planning agency to correct the drift in Canada's economic policy. First published in 1984, Planning and the Economy is a strongly argued entry into the vital debates over Canadian political and economic policy in the early 1980s.
