Book excerpt: Golden Miles is a book about cars, people and Australia in the late 60s and early 70s. With the energy and irreverent humour of a fanzine, the acuity of investigative journalism, and the eye of an art book, this new, expanded edition of Golden Miles explores the archetypal product of Australian suburbia - the muscle car. Clinton Walker is the author of seven books and several hit documentaries including the 2001 series on the history of Australian rock, Long Way to the Top. 'A rambling journey that's provocative and lavishly illustrated ... as much for pop culture lovers as rev heads.' - Sydney Morning Herald.

With the chequered flag flying on the Blue Oval favourite, this book examines the first Falcons to take flight in the early 1960s through to the final FG-X. Special emphasis is placed on the glorious decade 1969-78 and the magnificent high-performance machines from the Falcon XW GT-HO to the XA, XB and the Cobra. These are cars that still command instant respect and ooze all the excitement, emotion, colour, freedom and raw power of their time. Ford Falcon captures the stories from the men who designed, developed, built and raced these bred-for-Bathurst beasts. It features stunning photography of Falcon's triumphs, milestones and majesty. After some 56 years and 3.8 million cars, what better way to say goodbye to Aussie motoring royalty.

Book excerpt: This book takes the Immortals concept made famous in cricket and applies it to motorsport, choosing the best of the best from Bathurst and the Australian Touring Car Championship (now the Supercars Championship) and other local series. It delves into the careers and characteristics of icons Peter Brock, Allan Moffat and Dick Johnson along with modern-era champions such as Mark Skaife, Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup: heroes who are not just high achievers but influential identities who set a new benchmark and changed local racing forever through skill, determination and sheer will. It tells the remarkable stories behind each Immortal's rise, from the fabled tale of rock star Johnson to the little-known facts surrounding Lowndes' Bathurst arrival in 1994 that, a few hours earlier, teetered on the brink of disaster. The Immortals of Australian Motor Racing: the Local Heroes is the third instalment in Gelding Street Press's Immortals of Australian Sport series. In it, motorsport writer Luke West gives readers insights into his 10 chosen immortals and their influence on the national scene.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cars, the stars, the thrills and the spills from 60 years of the Bathurst classic by Australia's premier motorsports journalist with a foreword by five-time winner Garth Tander The Bathurst 1000 is undoubtedly Australia's 'Great Race', forever part of the sporting fabric of the nation. The 1000-kilometre race, held on the world-famous Mount Panorama circuit, is both a legend-maker and a heartbreaker, all wrapped up in one thrilling ride. From its beginnings in the 1960s as a 500-mile race for standard production cars, the Bathurst 1000 has evolved into an annual multi-million dollar battle between purpose-built, millimetre-perfect V8-powered Supercars. After six decades of this extraordinary battle on the mountain, The Great Race takes a look back at the thrills, the spills, the legends and the losers of the race's history, from the legendary Ford and Holden battles to how the Mountain made household names of Peter Brock, Allan Moffat, Dick Johnson, Craig Lowndes, Mark Skaife and so many more, including the fearless women who have challenged the race. From the famous, edge-of-your-seat races to the infamous moments on and off the track, and the characters, rivalries, rifts and controversies, Aaron Noonan - Australia's leading motorsport journalist and commentator - enshrines all the high-octane action and gives an eye-opening account of how the circuit has evolved from a scenic tourist drive into a world-famous Mecca of motorsport. With special added insight into what became of the legendary cars that have conquered Mount Panorama after their days of glory, The Great Race is a fast-paced drive down Bathurst 1000 memory lane.

Book excerpt: The book is based on my life story to the age of forty. I was a normal young boy growing up. I enjoyed being a kid and playing with my friends after school and on the weekends. I loved my mum and dad very much. We would go on picnics and go swimming and fishing. We used to go to Sunday school, and I loved that. I just loved life! When was thirteen, Mum and Dad bought a boat, and we would go away every second weekend. I left school in fourth form and started work straight away. I had a number of jobs and met a girl. Eventually we were going to get married. When I was twenty-one, I caught my best man in bed with my girlfriend. That put me over the edge. So I started into drugs and drinking to escape the pain. I was hurting every day. You could say I was two people: Bill 1 and Bill 2. Unhappy Bill 2 would get stoned and drink every day. I was not proud of myself, but that was the way it was. I moved to Port Stephens to start a new life, but the only thing that changed was living in a new area; I still did drugs and drank, and one day I thought about committing suicide. Then one day I got down on my knees and cried out to God. He heard my cries, and I started going to church and was saved. I was delivered from drugs and drunkenness. It's now been eighteen years since Ive had drugs or been drunk. God performed a miracle in me, and I want that for other people.
