Book Synopsis Beyond Spectacle by : Juliette Merritt
Download or read book Beyond Spectacle written by Juliette Merritt and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theories of sight and spectatorship captivated many writers and philosophers of the eighteenth century and, in turn, helped to define both sexual politics and gender identity. Eliza Haywood was thoroughly engaged in the social, philosophical, and political issues of her time, and she wrote prolifically about them, producing over seventy-five works of literature - plays, novels, and pamphlets - during her lifetime. Examining a number of works from this prodigious canon, Juliette Merritt focuses on Haywood's consideration of the myriad issues surrounding sight and seeing and argues that Haywood explored strategies to undermine the conventional male spectator/female spectacle structure of looking. Combining close readings of Haywood's work with twentieth-century debates among feminist and psychoanalytic theorists concerning the visual dynamics of identity and gender formation, Merritt explores insights into how the gaze operates socially, epistemologically, and ontologically in Haywood's writing, ultimately concluding that Haywood's own strategy as an author involved appropriating the spectator position as a means of exercising female power. Beyond Spectacle will cement Haywood's deservedly prominent place in the canon of eighteenth-century fiction and position her as a writer whose work speaks not only to female agency, but to eighteenth-century writers, gender relations, and power politics as well.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Research on Contemporary Approaches to Orientalism in Media and Beyond by : Tombul, I??l
Download or read book Handbook of Research on Contemporary Approaches to Orientalism in Media and Beyond written by Tombul, I??l and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-05-28 with total page 990 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orientalism is about much more than just information gathered about the East within its general postcolonial period. In this period, orientalism is a Western discourse that dominated and shaped the view of the East. There is “otherization” in the way the West has historically looked at the East and within the information presented about it. These original stories of travelers in the past and previous telling about the East are facing a reconstruction through modern types of media. Cinema, television, news, newspaper, magazine, internet, social media, photography, literature, and more are transforming the way the East is presented and viewed. Under the headings of post-orientalism, neo-orientalism, or self-orientalism, these new orientalist forms of work in combination with both new and traditional media are redefining orientalism in the media and beyond. The Handbook of Research on Contemporary Approaches to Orientalism in Media and Beyond shows how both new media and traditional media deal with orientalism today through the presentation of gender, race, religion, and culture that make up orientalist theory. The chapters focus on how orientalism is presented in the media, cinema, TV, photography, and more. This book is ideal for communications theorists, media analysts, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students working in fields that include mass media, communications, film studies, ethnic studies, history, sociology, and cultural studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three sexy and intriguing men discover love can be a great healer, if they can only brave the risk... Insecure They have one night stand written all over them until they discovered love was worth the risk. Jacinta is the CEO–in–waiting, with an office suite on the top floor. She has power, influence, her life mapped out. Mace is the geek from IT, working in cubicle hell. He has big dreams, no patience for crap, and an appetite for risk. Jacinta could have Mace sacked quicker than taking her next breath. He could ruin her reputation with an email. The city conspires against their one hot night and provides a whole weekend, secret, private, and deep. But real life returns on a Monday, and with it reason and distance. Will their connection be enough to bridge the space between, when fortunes reverse and dreams are lost and found, or will the weight of expectation and the burn of insecurity drive them apart? Inconsolable Sometimes the only way to forgiveness is through love. Foley has a new boss she doesn't like, a flatmate who's been known to wear odd shoes, and a car that's ready to pack it in. She hasn't met a guy worth lipstick in forever, and though she planned a life less ordinary, the only thing unique about her is a badly thought through tattoo. Until Drum. Drum wasn't always the cliff guy, a homeless man sheltering in a cave tucked above a popular tourist beach. He wanted to get as far away from his previous life as possible. Now he wakes with the sun, runs on the beach, does odd jobs for cash to buy food, and is at peace. Until Foley. It's Foley's job to find Drum a safer place to live, but the only home Drum wants is the one place he can never stay: Foley's heart. Incapable Love can be a great healer, except when it hurts... As voice actor royalty, Damon Donovan is trouble. He's professionally intimidating. He's confident. He's charming, funny and genuinely talented. And he triggers the nurturing instincts newly separated Georgia Fairweather has sworn to ignore. Damon Donovan is used to three types of women: those who fawn, those who mother and those who want to fix him. So a reticent, prickly engineer he can neither awe nor charm triggers his interest. A recording engineer and a voice actor should be a match to sing about, but the thrilling rhythm they create is soon drowned out by static. Georgia doesn't know who she is, and Damon doesn't know who he'll become. Can a man facing his insecurities and a woman afraid of her own instincts harmonise, or are they destined to sound good in theory, but be out of sync in life and love?
