Book excerpt: Besides the erroneous assumption that tropical fisheries are ‘open access’, the cases demonstrate that pre-existing systems (1) are concerned with the community of fishers and ensuring community harmony and continuity; (2) involve flexible, multiple and overlapping rights adapted to changing needs and circumstances; (3) that fisheries are just one component of a community resource assemblage and depend on both the good management of linked upstream ecosystems and risk management to ensure balanced nutritional resources of the community; and (4) pre-existing systems are greatly affected by a constellation of interacting external pressures.

There are several news after major disasters on how these IK has been effective to protect the lives and properties of people and communities. Some of the IK has been orally transmitted and some are documented by local organisations sporadically. Asia, being one of the most disaster prone areas in the world, people and communities has developed their coping mechanisms over time, which is reflected in the form of IK. While many organisations recognise the importance of IK for disaster risk reduction (DRR), there has been few systematic study on analysing the principles of IK and its applicability to the modern context. The book is one of the first and unique attempts of systematic study of IK in DRR. The key challenge will start after the publishing of the book: to make it a useful reference materials for decision making, research, implementation and documentation. The target of the book is professionals, practitioners, researchers and graduate students in the related field.
Book Synopsis 4000 Years of Migration and Cultural Exchange by : Peter Bellwood
Download or read book 4000 Years of Migration and Cultural Exchange written by Peter Bellwood and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project reported on in this monograph has been concerned with the archaeology of the Batanes Islands, an archipelago that must have been settled quite early in the process of Austronesian dispersal from Taiwan southwards into the Philippines. A multi-phase archaeological sequence covering the past 4000 years for the islands of Itbayat, Batan, Sabtang and Siayan is presented, extending from the Neolithic to the final phase of Batanes prehistory, just prior to the late 17th century arrivals of foreign navigators such as Jirobei (Japan) and William Dampier (England), followed by the first Spanish missionaries. So far, no traces of preceramic settlement have been found in Batanes, but the archaeological sequence there from the Neolithic onwards, like that in the Cagayan Valley in northern Luzon, is now one of the best-established in the Philippines.

Book Synopsis Past Human Migrations in East Asia by : Alicia Sanchez-Mazas
Download or read book Past Human Migrations in East Asia written by Alicia Sanchez-Mazas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-07-25 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the prehistory of East Asia is developing very rapidly. In uncovering the story of the flows of human migration that constituted the peopling of East Asia there exists widespread debate about the nature of evidence and the tools for correlating results from different disciplines. Drawing upon the latest evidence in genetics, linguistics and archaeology, this exciting new book examines the history of the peopling of East Asia, and investigates the ways in which we can detect migration, and its different markers in these fields of inquiry. Results from different academic disciplines are compared and reinterpreted in the light of evidence from others to attempt to try and generate consensus on methodology. Taking a broad geographical focus, the book also draws attention to the roles of minority peoples – hitherto underplayed in accounts of the region’s prehistory – such as the Austronesian, Tai-Kadai and Altaic speakers, whose contribution to the regional culture is now becoming accepted. Past Human Migrations in East Asia presents a full picture of the latest research on the peopling of East Asia, and will be of interest to scholars of all disciplines working on the reconstruction of the peopling of East and North East Asia.
