Book excerpt: Excerpt from Basketry of the Papago and Pima The investigation herein reported was made during the winter months of 1910 - 1911 in some two dozen Pima and Papago villages, as a part of the Museum's systematic study of the peoples of lower culture in south western United States. All the principal villages of the Santa Rosa Valley and foothills were visited, together with those of the Santa Cruz near Tucson, including San Xavier, Kioto, Little Tucson, Indian Oasis, Big Fields, Cababi, Comababi, Vinumuku, Conduien, Quijotoa, Kuvuhea (che wak), Twavaheu, Brownell Camp, and N oepa as well as the Pima villages of Kuu Ki, Hassanykuk, Saopuk, Talsituk, Oskuk, Wetcurt, Rsotuk, Hermho or Amu Akimult, and Babychurl. Acknowledgment must be made for the identification of the plants employed in basketry to the staff of the botanical department of the University of Arizona; and for very courteous hospitality to Rev. And Mrs. Herndon, Indian Oasis; Mr. Day, Quijotoa; Mr. Brownell, Brownell C& and Mr. R. Rasmessen, Tuscon. For the drawings the author is indebted to Miss Ruth B. Howe and for the photographs of specimens to the Photographic Department of the Museum, for that of the Papago granary to the United States National Museum, and the basket maker within her storage bin to Putnam and Valentine, Los Angeles. The outdoor photographs were taken by the author, often under very adverse conditions, but the subjects presented are in the main new. The expenses of the field trip were contributed by Mr. Archer M. Hunting ton. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Basketry Designs of the Indians of Northern California One of the earliest-noted and prime characteristics of the Indians of California is the great development among them of the art of basket-making. Not only did they excel in technique, in producing water-tight baskets of both the coiled and twined varieties, but also in the extent to which they developed the purely artistic side of basket-making in the elaboration of designs and methods of ornamentation. Carving and painting were, as far as we know, not numbered among the arts of this portion of the Pacific coast; pottery was unknown; and decoration in dress was, if we except the feather ornaments used at dances, as a rule, of the simplest sort in comparison with the elaborate and often profuse dec oration found among many of the Indians of the plains. The California Indians were, therefore, practically confined, for the expression of their artistic sense, to basketry alone; and possi bly this concentration of effort will afford a partial explanation, at least, of the great perfection to which the art was carried. But, while we find that basket-making and basketry design and ornamentation are characteristic of the California Indians as a whole, these arts were not developed to the same extent, or along the same lines, in all parts of the region. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska Basketry Declaring itself to the public through this, its first publication, the Beaver Club seeks to place itself in that group of idealists that not only believes in dreams, but also believes that by patient, sincere and reverent effort, dreams may be made to come true. There is a dream that many have held and toward the realization of which many have labored - and it is the dream of a thing made glorious through the patient, perceiving labor of those who produce it. To such a vision, and to the manifold works that have been done in the striving towards its realization, the world owes the most of whatever it can boast which is, beyond all else, rare and lovely and infinitely to be desired. In its present and future work, the Beaver Club hopes to add, from Oregon, from the Pacific Northwest, a distinctive and valuable contribution to humanity's store of things rare and beautiful and, as nearly as possible, perfect. The perfection sought is not the infinitely reduplicated perfection that comes through the infallible accuracy of machines, but the perfection that comes through conscious and zealous artistic effort of persons inspired by a desire to attain to a high and sweet ideal. The books of the Beaver Club possibly may never come to be loved and sought after because they are the most beautiful of their kind in the world; but the Beaver Club hopes to make them appreciatively beautiful to the world because their production is to the Club, above everything else, a labor of profound love.
