A street-sized walk, appropriately called the Diag, runs diagonally across this square, connecting its southeast and northwest corners. In 1904 a new engineering building was either started or finished (I do not remember which) to house classrooms. When another engineering building was built on the expanded campus across the street from it many years later, the old building came to be known as West Engine, to distinguish it from the new East Engine. Old West Engine is (or maybe by now, was) a four-story, L-shaped structure that stood at the southeast corner of the original campus. It was built with an arch in it to straddle the Diag at the apex of the L. You walked over the Engineering Arch to get from one leg of the L to the other if you were inside the building, and you walked under it when you entered the campus from the southeast corner. Affixed to the masonry wall of the arch was a plaque I often noted in passing. It bore a quote attributed to Horace Greeley (1811-1872), who I did not know at the time was the founder, editor, and publisher of the New York Tribune. It said, simply, Young man, when theory and practice differ, use your horse sense. The suggestion seems worthy of an exclamation point instead of a period, but I do not remember if it had one.

One is the strength of the radar bean sweeping over a target, the other is the strength of the reflected echo senses by the receiver. This book shows how the RCS "gauge" can be predicted for theoretical objects.

Book excerpt: Prediction, reduction, and measurement of electromagnetic scattering from complex three-dimensional targets is the primary emphasis of this text, developed by the author from courses taught at the Naval Postgraduate School. The analysis methods discussed focus on physical optics and numerical solutions to Maxwell's equations (the method of moments and finite-difference solutions) as they apply to radar cross section. Numerous examples have been included to illustrate the application of important methods and concepts. Written as an instructional text, this book is recommended for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students. It is also a good reference book for engineers in industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores the use of periodic open slots as passive antenna scatterers to enhance the radar cross section of a simple target. Two slot geometries are considered, thin rectangular slots and circular slots. Targets are modified with slot arrays of various element size, spacings, numbers, and geometries. These geometries were later backed by a cavity in an attempt to further enhance RCS. Measurements were taken and the results were compared to target baselines, which are nothing more than the unslotted version of the same target. Moment method solutions were also computed for comparisons with measured results. Additionally, an analytical expression for antenna scattering was tested as a means of achieving a fast first order accurate solution for target RCS.

Book excerpt: The standing-wave method of measuring radar cross sections has been adapted for use at 26 Mc. A target in the middle of a large flat field was illuminated by a transmitter 300 ft away, and a probe was moved along the transmitter-target line to measure the amplitude and position of the standing wave due to the target. Aluminum dipoles of different lengths were first used as targets, and a correction was applied to the results to take account of any nonuniform illumination of the targets. Both the target cross section and the phase of the scattered radiation varied with the target length in the same way as that predicted from microwave measurements. The results demonstrate the validity of extrapolating microwave measurements to the high-frequency part of the spectrum. Calibration of the system was achieved by using the known cross section of a half-wave dipole. The technique was used to measure cross sections of trees and other objects, and in some cases the effective height of an irregularly shaped tree could be deduced. (Author).
