Book Synopsis Basics of Thermodynamics and Phase Transitions in Complex Intermetallics by : Esther Belin-Ferre
Download or read book Basics of Thermodynamics and Phase Transitions in Complex Intermetallics written by Esther Belin-Ferre and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complex metal alloys (CMAs) comprise a huge group of largely unknown alloys and compounds, where many phases are formed with crystal structures based on giant unit cells containing atom clusters, ranging from tens of to more than thousand atoms per unit cell. In these phases, for many phenomena, the physical length scales are substantially smaller than the unit-cell dimension. Hence, these materials offer unique combinations of properties which are mutually exclusive in conventional materials, such as metallic electric conductivity combined with low thermal conductivity, good light absorption with high-temperature stability, high metallic hardness with reduced wetting by liquids, etc. This book is the first of a series of books issued yearly as a deliverable to the European Community of the School established within the European Network of Excellence CMA. Written by reputed experts in the fields of metal physics, surface physics, surface chemistry, metallurgy, and process engineering, this book brings together expertise found inside as well as outside the network to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge in CMAs.

Book Synopsis Mechanical Properties of Complex Intermetallics by : Esther Belin-Ferr
Download or read book Mechanical Properties of Complex Intermetallics written by Esther Belin-Ferr and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will be the last one in a series of 4 books issued yearly as a deliverable of the research school established within the European Network of Excellence CMA (for Complex Metallic Alloys). It is written by reputed experts in the fields of metal physics, surface physics and chemistry, metallurgy and process engineering, combining expertise found inside as well as outside the network. The CMA network focuses on the huge group of largely unknown multinary alloys and compounds formed with crystal structures based on giant unit cells containing clusters, with many tens up to more than thousand atoms per unit cell. In these phases, for many phenomena, the physical length scales are substantially smaller than the unit-cell dimension. Hence, these materials offer unique combinations of properties, which are mutually excluded in conventional materials: metallic electric conductivity combined with low thermal conductivity, combination of good light absorption with high-temperature stability, combination of high metallic hardness with reduced wetting by liquids, electrical and thermal resistance tuneable by composition variation, excellent resistance to corrosion, reduced cold-welding and adhesion, enhanced hydrogen storage capacity and light absorption, etc. The series of books will concentrate on: development of fundamental knowledge with the aim of understanding materials phenomena, technologies associated with the production, transformation and processing of knowledge-based multifunctional materials, surface engineering, support for new materials development and new knowledge-based higher performance materials for macro-scale applications.

Book excerpt: On the nanometer scale, the local variation of the electronic density of states of aluminum based complex metallic alloys (quasicrystals and approximants) is experimentally investigated by low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy. We report on the correlation between the local variations of the electronic density of states and the electrical resistivity. The surface structure is investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy, low energy electron diffraction, and X-ray photoemission diffraction. Experimental results are interpreted on the basis of the respective bulk structure models.

WESTBROOK The Series, "Data and Knowledge in a Changing World", exemplifies CODATA's primary purpose of collecting, from widely different fields, a wealth of information on efficient exploitation of data for progress in science and technology and making that information available to scientists and engineers. A separate and complementary CODATA Reference Series will present Directories of compiled and evaluated data and Glossaries of data-related terms. The present book "Thermodynamic Modeling and Materials Data Engineering" discusses thermodynamic, structural, systemic and heuristic approaches to the modeling of complex materials behavior in condensed phases, both fluids and solids, in order to evaluate their potential applications. Itwas inspired by the Symposium on "Materials and Structural Properties" held during the 14th International CODATA Conference in Chambery, France. The quality of the contributions to this Symposium motivated us to present" a coherent book of interest to the field. Updated contributions inspired by Symposium discussions and selections from other CODATA workshops concerning material properties data and Computer Aided Design combine to highlight the complexity of material data issues on experimental, theoretical and simulation levels Articles were selected for their pertinence in three areas. Complex data leading to interesting developments and tools such as: • new developments in state equations and their applications, • prediction and validation of physical and energy data by group correlations for pure compounds, • modeling and prediction of mixture properties.
