Book excerpt: Basement Tales goes through and analyzes, in chronological order, the publication on disk of the songs recorded by Bob Dylan & The Band in numerous sessions in Woodstock between the months of March and October of 1967. These songs, better known as The Basement Tapes, were not originally intended for the making of a Bob Dylan's album but for cover versions by various artists of the time. The importance of the author and his simultaneous momentary absence from the recording market initially aroused interest from the underground market, which started the publication of the first bootlegs in the history of rock, and subsequently also those of the official record company. The publication of the songs taken from the Basement Tapes begins in 1969 with seven songs present in the bootleg Great White Wonder and ends with the creation, in 2014, of a voluminous box of 140 songs by Columbia Records, which was The Bootleg Series Vol 11: The Basement Tapes Complete. In this long period of time the two markets, the underground and the official one, have alternated with various record publications which are analyzed in detail in the book.

Book excerpt: Woodstock, 1967The Summer Of Love passes Dylan by. While Sergeant Pepper converts the rest of the music scene to sitar, trumpets, sound experiments, strings, studio effects and psychedelics at all, Dylan and The Band sit for months in the countryside in a big house, playing antique folk and country songs in the basement of the Big Pink. In between, he tinkers and fools around with the band on about seventy of new songs that sound fresh and old-fashioned at the same time. Some of them are gratefully picked up by others. Manfred Mann scores with "The Mighty Quinn", Julie Driscoll has a hit with "This Wheel's On Fire", The Byrds throw themselves on "You Ain't Going Nowhere" and half the music world is happy with "I Shall Be Released", to name but a few. As for the originals: the world has to make do with sneaky bootleg recordings - especially The Great White Wonder achieves mythical status. In 1975 The Basement Tapes is released, on which a modest, polished selection of the recordings can be found, and it's only in 2014 that almost everything is officially released: The Basement Tapes Complete is number eleven in The Bootleg Series. In his sixth Dylan book, Jochen Markhorst takes the reader along 32 of the best and most completed Basement songs, highlighting the backgrounds, history and impact of the legendary Basement Tapes.

Book excerpt: Out of a house called Big Pink came music that remains as seductive and baffling today as it was over thirty years ago. âe~Marcusâe(tm)s contention is that there can be found in American folk a community as deep, as electric, as perverse and as conflicted as all America, and that the songs Dylan recorded out of the public eye, in a basement in Woodstock with the group who would later become The Band, are where that community as a whole gets to speak . . . Books this good should be burntâe(tm) Mark Sinker, Wire âe~We owe God a death, and Greil Marcus owed all Godâe(tm)s children a lifework on Bob Dylan. And here it is, one heaven of a book . . . what Marcus brings to these songs is a variety of good things: fierce fervour, social convictions, a loving discrimination, never a touch of envy and an extraordinary ability to evoke in words the very feel (throaty, threatening, thorough, thick with thought) of a manâe(tm)s voice, of this manâe(tm)s voiceâe(tm) Christopher Ricks, Guardian âe~You will want to read its most provoking parts over and over and chances are, twenty years from now, it will stand as one of the classics of American criticismâe(tm) Mikal Gilmore, Observer âe~A rare ability to describe the genesis of a song and make it sound better than any song you have ever heardâe(tm) Tim Adams, Times Literary Supplement

Book excerpt: Quirky and wonderfully candid, Neil Young's second book of reminiscences is as compelling as his first book. He returns with more unforgettable stories about his six decades in the music business - but this is not your average rock biography. He centres this work on one of his life's passions, cars, using the framework of all the cars he's ever owned to construct a narrative of his life and career, exploring and demonstrating how memories are attached to objects. Young also expresses regret for the environmental impact of his past cars, and now passionately advocates the use of clean energy. 'Special Deluxe' is a mix of memoir and environmental politics by one of the most gifted and influential artists of our time.

Book excerpt: Tom Spanbauer’s first novel in seven years is a love story triangle akin to The Marriage Plot and Freedom, only with a gay main character who charms gays and straights alike. I Loved You More is a rich, expansive tale of love, sex, and heartbreak, covering twenty-five years in the life of a striving, emotionally wounded writer. In New York, Ben forms a bond of love with his macho friend and foil, Hank. Years later in Portland, a now ill Ben falls for Ruth, who provides the care and devotion he needs, though they cannot find true happiness together. Then Hank reappears and meets Ruth, and real trouble starts. Set against a world of struggling artists, the underground sex scene of New York in the 1980s, the drab, confining Idaho of Ben’s youth, and many places in between, I Loved You More is the author’s most complex and wise novel to date.

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE The celebrated first memoir from arguably the most influential singer-songwriter in the country, Bob Dylan. 'I'd come from a long ways off and had started a long ways down. But now destiny was about to manifest itself. I felt like it was looking right at me and nobody else.' So writes Bob Dylan in Chronicles: Volume One, his remarkable book exploring critical junctures in his life and career. Through Dylan’s eyes and open mind, we see Greenwich Village, circa 1961, when he first arrives in Manhattan. Dylan’s New York is a magical city of possibilities - smoky, nightlong parties; literary awakenings; transient loves and unbreakable friendships. Elegiac observations are punctuated by jabs of memories, penetrating and tough. With the book’s side trips to New Orleans, Woodstock, Minnesota, and points west, Chronicles: Volume One is an intimate and intensely personal recollection of extraordinary times. By turns revealing, poetical, passionate, and witty, Chronicles: Volume One is a mesmerizing window on Bob Dylan’s thoughts and influences. Dylan’s voice is distinctively American: generous of spirit, engaged, fanciful, and rhythmic. Utilizing his unparalleled gifts of storytelling and the exquisite expressiveness that are the hallmarks of his music, Bob Dylan turns Chronicles: Volume One into a poignant reflection on life, and the people and places that helped shape the man and the art. 'Chronicles stunned everyone . . . [it's] clear, apparently frank, unremittingly serious about his musical influences and exquisitely written. It is, in fact, a masterpiece' Sunday Times 'Entertaining and surprisingly deprecating... The book's structure is elegant . . . Chronicles is tautly written, vividly cinematic, and funny . . . a courageous little book' Financial Times 'There is something on every page, in every paragraph, that demands attention . . . In rock and roll terms, this book is like discovering the lost diaries of Shakespeare. It may be the most extraordinarily intimate autobiography by a 20th-century legend' Daily Telegraph

Book excerpt: “The girl with Bob Dylan on the cover of Freewheelin’ broke a forty-five-year silence with this affectionate and dignified recalling of a relationship doomed by Dylan’s growing fame.” –UNCUT magazine Suze Rotolo chronicles her coming of age in Greenwich Village during the 1960s and the early days of the folk music explosion, when Bob Dylan was finding his voice and she was his muse. A shy girl from Queens, Suze was the daughter of Italian working-class Communists, growing up at the dawn of the Cold War. It was the age of McCarthy and Suze was an outsider in her neighborhood and at school. She found solace in poetry, art, and music—and in Greenwich Village, where she encountered like-minded and politically active friends. One hot July day in 1961, Suze met Bob Dylan, then a rising musician, at a concert at Riverside Church. She was seventeen, he was twenty; they were both vibrant, curious, and inseparable. During the years they were together, Dylan transformed from an obscure folk singer into an uneasy spokesperson for a generation. A Freewheelin’ Time is a hopeful, intimate memoir of a vital movement at its most creative. It captures the excitement of youth, the heartbreak of young love, and the struggles for a brighter future in a time when everything seemed possible.

Book excerpt: "If you know what you want, I'll get it for you. If you don't know what you want, I'll do it for you." Todd Rundgren. Few record producers possess the musical facility to back up such a bold promise, but in over forty-plus years behind the glass, Todd Rundgren has willed himself into becoming a not only a rock guitar virtuoso, an accomplished lead vocalist, and a serviceable drummer, vocal arranger and keyboard player, but also a master of perhaps his greatest instrument of all, the recording studio. Throughout his career, Rundgren has ping-ponged between the worlds of producer and recording artist with varying degrees of critical and commercial success. After learning his craft as a songwriter and arranger, with Nazz, Rundgren gained attention for engineering recordings by The Band. His reputation was cemented by a string of noteworthy productions beginning in 1971 with Sparks, and continuing with classic albums for Grand Funk, The New York Dolls, Badfinger, Hall & Oates, Meat Loaf, Patti Smith Group, Psychedelic Furs and XTC. All of this alongside his own solo albums – such as, Something/Anything, A Wizard A True Star and Hermit Of Mink Hollow – on which he played and sang virtually everything, and a series of albums by his band, Utopia. Researched and written with the participation and cooperation of Rundgren himself, Todd Rundgren: Sounds Of The Studio is a fascinating and authoritative trip through the land of flickering red lights inhabited by a studio wizard – and true star – who has rarely enjoyed a proper victory lap along the many trails that he has blazed. Draws upon exclusive new interviews with Robbie Robertson, Patti Smith, XTC, Sparks, Daryl Hall & John Oates, Meat Loaf, Jim Steinman, Cheap Trick, Grand Funk, The Psychedelic Furs, The Tubes, Steve Hillage, all members of Rundgren's legendary band, Utopia, and many other key Rundgren associates.
