Book excerpt: This “relentlessly suspenseful” story of America’s first known kidnapping in nineteenth century Philadelphia is “elegantly told, superbly accomplished” (The Philadelphia Enquirer). In 1874, a little boy named Charley Ross was snatched from his family’s front yard in Philadelphia. A ransom note arrived three days later, demanding twenty thousand dollars for the boy’s return. The city was about to host the America’s Centennial celebration, and the mass panic surrounding the Charley Ross case plunged the nation into hysteria. The desperate search led the police to inspect every building in Philadelphia, set up saloon surveillance in New York’s notorious slums, and begin a national manhunt. With white-knuckle suspense and historical detail, Hagen vividly captures the dark side of an earlier America. Her brilliant portrayal of its criminals, detectives, politicians, spiritualists, and ordinary families will stay with the reader long after the final page. “Hagen skillfully narrates a saga that transcends one kidnapping, a saga tied up with the World’s Fair that was about to open in Philadelphia.” —Kirkus Reviews “As Erik Larson mined the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair for Devil in the White City, Hagen chronicles a tragically more relevant 19th-century story.” —Michael Capuzzo, author of The Murder Room

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's 1966; a nasty war is raging in Vietnam and in the City Room of Seattle's favorite newspaper, the Post-Intelligencer. The battle is with its old archrival, the Seattle Times. The P-I has the edge on talent with writers like Frank Herbert, the science fiction author who would go on to write the Dune novels, and Tom Robbins, who created a new genre with Even Cowgirls Get the Blues and is now on the P-I copy desk writing headlines. Into this ever-growing pool of talent, the reporter-photographer team of twenty-five-year-old Rick Sangaster and World War II Marine Corps veteran and pure-blood Sioux Indian Hawkeye O'Sullivan are on the front line. Each of these men has problems from their pasts, as well as their present, but when it comes to reporting the news, or at times creating the news themselves, they're far ahead of their contemporaries in both the P-I City Room as well as the Times.

Book excerpt: Toby Sinclair is convinced there is a killer in his future-lethal, amoral, vicious-not to mention highly elusive since Toby continues to remain alive and unharmed despite his fears. When he is pressured by his only friend to help a drifter bury a steamer trunk in the middle of the woods, a drifter who flaunts his abusive habits, Toby is satisfied that he has found his murderer. It is a fact that both alarms, and in a strange way, fulfills him. His prediction about his own fate is compromised when he realizes that instead of becoming a victim he finds himself to be an accomplice to whatever is hidden in the buried steamer trunk. To be cleared of the suspicion he must endure a parade of strange characters, high-octane spirits, absurd situations and his own struggle between loyalty and justice. "Wet Brain" is a novel that borrows the skin of empty paranoia and creates the farcical face of a man vexed at his failure to properly succumb to his own destructive destiny.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air Force Cop An Autobiography By: Kelly D. Harrison The enforcement of law in the US Armed Forces is covered by the Uniform Code of Military Justice and, when applicable, Title 18 of the US Code. There are other regulations and directives that can result in punitive action. The US Armed Forces is a US taxpayer funded enterprise with the US Army and US Navy almost as old as the nation itself. Crimes against property in the armed forces are not like that of breaking into a privately owned jewelry store in New York City, since all property “owned” by the military branches is property of the US Government. Military members and others who damage, destroy or steal property of the US Government and fellow military members are dealt with harshly. This includes those military members and civilians who commit murder, rape, acts of serious bodily injury and other “index crimes” such as auto theft, arson, kidnapping, etc., within the jurisdiction of the federal government. The US Armed Forces have several consolidated confinement facilities and the US Disciplinary Barracks at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. Each military branch has their own police and investigative agencies for dealing with crimes against property and people. In the US Air Force, there are the Security Forces (previously known as Air Police and Security Police) for protection of base resources, traffic control enforcement and investigation of misdemeanor offenses. The Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) is a cadre of enlisted, officer and civilian special agents (all with Federal Law Enforcement Officer status) who are highly trained in specialties such as forensics, fraud, counter-intelligence, polygraph, computer crimes, electronic technical support (hidden cameras, electronic sweeping for covert recording devices, etc.) and general crimes such as arson, homicides, child abuse along with every other imaginable offense against property and people.

Book excerpt: A national bestseller, the story of “a boy’s last days of youth and a history his father can’t leave behind” (The Daily Beast). Tom Harry has a streak of frost in his black pompadour and a venerable bar called The Medicine Lodge, the chief watering hole and last refuge in the town of Gros Ventre, in northern Montana. Tom also has a son named Rusty, an “accident between the sheets” whose mother deserted them both years ago. The pair make an odd kind of family, with the bar their true home, but they manage just fine. Until the summer of 1960, that is, when Rusty turns twelve. Change arrives with gale force, in the person of Proxy, a taxi dancer Tom knew back when, and her beatnik daughter, Francine. Is Francine, as Proxy claims, the unsuspected legacy of her and Tom’s past? Without a doubt she is an unsettling gust of the future, upending every certainty in Rusty’s life and generating a mist of passion and pretense that seems to obscure everyone’s vision but his own. The Bartender’s Tale wonderfully captures how the world becomes bigger and the past becomes more complex in the last moments of childhood.

Filling in for a friend at the fancy East Side saloon and eatery called The Ocean Club, McNulty finds more than he bargained for: a body floating in the East River. Combining complex characters with strikingly offbeat perspectives on left versus right, old versus new, and the good guys versus the bad guys, What Goes Around Comes Around is the stunning follow-up to Lehane's series debut.

Book excerpt: From Army lawyer to private investigator, Maxx MacDonald is a recently retired Lieutenant Colonel from the US Army Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG Corps). During his last duty station in Kuwait, Maxx enrolled in an online private investigation course. Instead of practicing law, he decided to move back to his home town of Toledo, Ohio, to open a private investigation firm, the only black PI firm in Toledo. Maxx is in the mode of the old PIs and cops on TV, who dressed sharp and chased women. He wears suits and designer shoes, and drives a black Chrysler 300C - because it fits his style. Maxx quickly assembles a team to help him solve the case. But real life is no study course. Not only is Maxx confronted with family issues - one sister is a drug addict and the other is in a physically abusive relationship - but he quickly realizes that he's in over his head. Maxx's first case could very well be his last.
