Book excerpt: A long debate in education has been the involvement of parents and whether their engagement improves student achievement. This qualitative research study sought to investigate the perceptions of teachers and administrators on the factors that affect parental engagement in school-sponsored workshops and examined effective strategies to foster parental engagement in those workshops. Sixteen teachers and seven administrators of a school district in southeastern Pennsylvanian volunteered for the study because of their influence on relationships with families and how those relationships encourage parental engagement in schools. Qualitative data on parental engagement in school-sponsored workshops emerged through an analysis of survey results and interviews with teachers and administrators. The findings of the research study suggested multiple components of a successful parental engagement model for school districts. Participants recognized that parent engagement in a child's education is essential but the barriers that impede parental engagement must be addressed to promote engagement in school-sponsored parent workshops. Schools need to individually invite families to workshops and the buildings should have a welcoming, friendly environment with the basic necessities of meals, childcare, transportation, and interpreters provided to the families. Furthermore, schools should utilize community resources to promote parental engagement. Finally, parent workshops need to include activities that actively engage parents with their child to enhance parental engagement in workshops. Literature implies these key components of a parental engagement model will improve the performance of students whose parents are engaged in their education, which ultimately, will impact their overall academic achievement.

Around 1 in 3 parents (29%) felt very involved in their childs school life, and primary school parents were more likely to feel this way than secondary school parents. Mothers were more likely to say that they were very involved than were fathers. Around 72% of all parents agreed that they wanted more involvement, and a third definitely agreed. Among the barriers to involvement, parents cited the competing demands in their lives such as work commitments, demands of other children, childcare difficulties, and lack of time generally. Almost all parents were happy with the schools attitude toward them, with a large majority finding the school welcoming (94%) and willing to involve them (84%). Parents particularly value face-to-face contact with teachers, but a significant minority thought that they would be labeled trouble makers if they talked too much. Parents were generally happy with the quality of written communications coming from schools, although a significant minority (27%) thought that the general information was spoiled by jargon. Many parents were not aware of the labels given to recent educational initiatives, and 35% did not recognize the term Home School Agreement, even though all had been invited to sign one. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the perceptions of high school teachers, administrators, and counselors regarding the impact of parental involvement on student achievement. Seven districts from the southeast and south central regions of Pennsylvania agreed to take part in the study. The researcher contacted teachers, administrators, and counselors from these districts requesting volunteers to complete a self-administered SurveyMonkey questionnaire. Eighty-five of these professional staff members responded to the questionnaire with eight staff members also participating in phone interviews. The survey instruments explored the following areas from the staff members' perspectives: 1) their role in promoting parental involvement, 2) strategies to increase parental involvement, and 3) barriers to parental involvement. Staff members in this study exhibited parental involvement perceptions consistent with prior research. Staff members perceived that parental involvement plays a significant role on student achievement at the high school level. Although the majority of the respondents believed that it was the responsibility of staff members to promote parental involvement within their respective schools, more than half of the staff members felt that it was not their responsibility to help parents understand how to check school assignments. Staff members emphasized the importance of promoting parental opportunities within the school, yet were divided about importance of face-to-face communication with parents. The finding seemed to contradict earlier studies calling for increased personal communication with parents. Conflicting testimony surfaced as respondents also cited examples of parents not being involved in helping students with schoolwork due to their own feelings of academic confusion or inadequacies. The study recommends further analysis, including students' and parents' perspectives, to resolve some of the disparities that emerged.
