Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 39 (thesis year 1994) a total of 13,953 thesis titles from 21 Canadian and 159 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 39 reports theses submitted in 1994, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: Distributed and Parallel Systems: Cluster and Grid Computing is the proceedings of the fourth Austrian-Hungarian Workshop on Distributed and Parallel Systems organized jointly by Johannes Kepler University, Linz, Austria and the MTA SZTAKI Computer and Automation Research Institute. The papers in this volume cover a broad range of research topics presented in four groups. The first one introduces cluster tools and techniques, especially the issues of load balancing and migration. Another six papers deal with grid and global computing including grid infrastructure, tools, applications and mobile computing. The next nine papers present general questions of distributed development and applications. The last four papers address a crucial issue in distributed computing: fault tolerance and dependable systems. This volume will be useful to researchers and scholars interested in all areas related to parallel and distributed computing systems.

Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of the 5th International Conference Parallel Architectures and Languages Europe (PARLE '94), held in Athens, Greece in July 1994. PARLE is the main Europe-based event on parallel processing. Parallel processing is now well established within the high-performance computing technology and of stategic importance not only to the computer industry, but also for a wide range of applications affecting the whole economy. The 60 full papers and 24 poster presentations accepted for this proceedings were selected from some 200 submissions by the international program committee; they cover the whole field and give a timely state-of-the-art report on research and advanced applications in parallel computing.

Book excerpt: High Performance Computing is an integrated computing environment for solving large-scale computational demanding problems in science, engineering and business. Newly emerging areas of HPC applications include medical sciences, transportation, financial operations and advanced human-computer interface such as virtual reality. High performance computing includes computer hardware, software, algorithms, programming tools and environments, plus visualization. The book addresses several of these key components of high performance technology and contains descriptions of the state-of-the-art computer architectures, programming and software tools and innovative applications of parallel computers. In addition, the book includes papers on heterogeneous network-based computing systems and scalability of parallel systems. The reader will find information and data relative to the two main thrusts of high performance computing: the absolute computational performance and that of providing the most cost effective and affordable computing for science, industry and business. The book is recommended for technical as well as management oriented individuals.

MTPP is the main regular event of the Russia–Taiwan scientific forum that covers the many dimensions of methods and tools of parallel programming, algorithms and architectures, encompassing fundamental theoretical approaches, practical experimental projects, and commercial components and systems. As applications of computing systems have permeated every aspect of daily life, the power of computing systems has become increasingly critical. Therefore, MTPP is intended to play an important role allowing researchers to exchange information regarding advancements in the state of the art and practice of IT-driven services and applications, as well as to identify emerging research topics and define the future directions of parallel computing. We received a large number of high-quality submissions this year. In the first stage, all papers submitted were screened for their relevance and general submission requirements. These manuscripts then underwent a rigorous peer-review process with at least three reviewers per paper. At the end, 33 papers were accepted for presentation and included in the main proceedings. To encourage and promote the work presented at MTPP 2010, we are delighted to inform the authors that some of the papers will be accepted in special issues of the Journal of Supercomputing, which has played a prominent role in promoting the development and use of parallel and distributed processing.

Book excerpt: Since I started working in the area of nonlinear programming and, later on, variational inequality problems, I have frequently been surprised to find that many algorithms, however scattered in numerous journals, monographs and books, and described rather differently, are closely related to each other. This book is meant to help the reader understand and relate algorithms to each other in some intuitive fashion, and represents, in this respect, a consolidation of the field. The framework of algorithms presented in this book is called Cost Approxi mation. (The preface of the Ph.D. thesis [Pat93d] explains the background to the work that lead to the thesis, and ultimately to this book.) It describes, for a given formulation of a variational inequality or nonlinear programming problem, an algorithm by means of approximating mappings and problems, a principle for the update of the iteration points, and a merit function which guides and monitors the convergence of the algorithm. One purpose of this book is to offer this framework as an intuitively appeal ing tool for describing an algorithm. One of the advantages of the framework, or any reasonable framework for that matter, is that two algorithms may be easily related and compared through its use. This framework is particular in that it covers a vast number of methods, while still being fairly detailed; the level of abstraction is in fact the same as that of the original problem statement.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Internet and World Wide Web (WWW) are popular as tools for convenient exchange of information, it is not easy to utilise the Internet for time-critical applications such as on-line remote diagnosis in telemedicine. It is a wish of the United Nations to bring e-health to every corner of the world via the Internet. This is easier said than done because the sheer size of the Internet implies unpredictable faults of all kinds. These faults are physically translated into communication and computation delays. Since these faults and delays have many contributing factors that can change suddenly, it is impractical to monitor them all for the sake of fault tolerance. For this reason the new concept of interpreting the channel dynamics by gauging its end-to-end behaviour has emerged. The aim is to measure the changes of the average service roundtrip time (RTT) over time and interpret the possible signs of faults from these changes. If the length of the average service RTT is suddenly increased in an exponential manner, network congestion and widespread retransmission are indicated. Then, the Internet and/or the applications running on it should invoke fault tolerance measures to prevent system breakdown and partial failures. This concept of gauging the channel dynamics to prevent system failure is generally known as Internet End-to-End Performance Measurement (IEPM). The purpose of the book is to shed light on some of the novel practical fault tolerance techniques that can help shorten the end-to-end service roundtrip (RTT) time of a logical Internet channel. As a result the Internet can be harnessed for serious time-critical applications. Several practical cases are presented to demonstrate how the effective harnessing can be achieved.
