The threat chapter includes references to new threat capabilities in Weapons of Mass Destruction, and a new figure on hate crime groups in the US. All the technology chapters have been reviewed and updated to include technology in use since 2001, when the first edition was published. Garcia has also added a new chapter that shows how the methodology described in the book is applied in transportation systems. College faculty who have adopted this text have suggested improvements and these have been incorporated as well. This second edition also includes some references to the author's recent book on Vulnerability Assessment, to link the two volumes at a high level. - New chapter on transportation systems - Extensively updated chapter on threat definition - Major changes to response chapter

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intrusion Detection Systems has long been considered the most important reference for intrusion detection system equipment and implementation. In this revised and expanded edition, it goes even further in providing the reader with a better understanding of how to design an integrated system. The book describes the basic operating principles and applications of the equipment in an easy to understand manner. This book was written for those security directors, consultants, and companies that select the equipment or make critical decisions about security systems design. Mr. Barnard provides sufficient detail to satisfy the needs of those interested in the technical principles, yet has included enough description on the operation and application of these systems to make Intrusion Detection Systems, Second Edition a useful reference for any security professional.

Book excerpt: Fire penetration tests were conducted to examine how the thermal protection afforded insulation in fire-exposed wall assemblies is influenced by wood-based panel type and thickness. Small-scale specimens (20-by 20-in.) were fabricated reflecting 1/4- to 3/4-inch plywood over 1-inch slabs of foam plastics; 5/8-inch plywood panels with no backup material, over a 3-1/2-inch loose-fill cellulosic insulation, 3-1/2-inch air gap, 1/2-inch foam plastic, or 3-1/2-inch glass-fiber insulation; and 5/8-inch particle board, 5/8-inch hardboard composite, 5/8-inch solid wood, 5/8-inch fire-retardant-treated plywood or 1/2-inch gypsum wallboard over 1-inch slabs of foam plastic. These specimens were then subjected to the time-temperature fire exposure given in ANSI/ASTM Standard E 119. Because this research was conducted only to characterize material response and not to define the more complex performance of full-scale assemblies according to all the requirements of ANSI/ASTM Standard E 119, the information is not directly applicable to establishing the finish rating for a given panel type. However, the results do increase our understanding of what panel characteristics influence finish rating in assemblies. (Author).

The recent advent of non-invasive skin bioengineering technology has accelerated dermatology research in this field. This book comprises an exhaustive reference text on irritant contact dermatitis, covering all aspects of the condition: clinical features, epidemiology, prevention and therapy, prognosis, mechanisms, pathology and regulatory issues. The book also presents novel in vitro and in vivo research techniques and findings. As irritant dermatitis affects multiple specialties, the audience for this book is wide, including clinical and investigative dermatologists, allergists, toxicologists, pharmaceutical scientists, occupational and environmental physicians, public health physicians, cosmetologists and skin bioengineers.
