Book Synopsis Baron Friedrich Von Hügel and the Modernist Crisis in England by : Lawrence F. Barmann
Download or read book Baron Friedrich Von Hügel and the Modernist Crisis in England written by Lawrence F. Barmann and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1972-04-27 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1890 and 1910 the Roman Catholic Church underwent a severe moral and intellectual crisis. A group of progressive Catholic scholars, later dubbed the 'modernists', challenged the authority of official Catholic teaching in many areas, basing their ideas on contemporary movements generally. The official reaction was at first discouraging and then openly hostile - most of the modernists were forced to leave the Church and their writings were placed in the Index. As one might expect, the accounts of the crisis by those who were closely involved in it are generally strongly partisan; moreover, its effects are still evident in present disputes in the Church but in 1972 the time came for an objective historical assessment of the major figures of the crisis as a means for understanding the movement as a whole. In this authoritative study Dr Barmann reconstructs in detail von Hugel's involvement in the modernist movement, particularly in England and rejects the received explanations of his survival in the Church.
Book Synopsis The Spiritual Formation of Evelyn Underhill by : Robyn Wrigley-Carr
Download or read book The Spiritual Formation of Evelyn Underhill written by Robyn Wrigley-Carr and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2020-03-20 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the renewed interest in Evelyn Underhill with the publication of Evelyn Underhill’s Prayer Book (SPCK, January 2018), the time seems right to offer a fresh perspective on the writer’s spiritual formation. Having undertaken original research, Robyn Wrigley-Carr first explores the spiritual nurture that Evelyn Underhill received from Baron Friedrich von Hügel (‘to whom I owe my spiritual life’). Second she reveals the spiritual nurture that Underhill gave to people herself, utilizing both published and unpublished materials. At the heart of the book is the idea of a ‘long obedience in the same direction’: Underhill’s life had purpose and meaning as a result of the Baron’s spiritual direction and the soul care she tirelessly bestowed on others.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystical Element of Religion as Studied in Saint Catherine of Genoa and Her Friends, Vol. 2: Critical Studies The picture of Catherine's life and teaching which was attempted in the previous volume will, I hope, have been sufiiciently Vivid to stimulate in the reader a desire to try and go deeper, and to get as near as may be to the driving forces, the metaphysical depths of her life. And yet it is obvious that, if we would understand something of these, we must pro ceed Slowly and thoroughly, and must begin with comparatively superficial questions. Or rather, we must begin by studying her temperamental and psycho-physical endowment and con dition, and then the literary influences that stimulated and helped to mould these things, as though all this were not secondary and but the material and occasion of the forces and self - determinations to be considered later on.
