Book excerpt: Classic poems from the English literary tradition come together in an anthology that traces our journey through life with a thoughtful blend of humour and playfulness, poignancy and nostalgia. This beautifully illustrated collection contains the works of some of the finest poets in the English language. It introduces children to the world's best poetry, from John Milton to William Carlos Williams. Here too are the voices of Robert Frost, W. H. Auden, Eleanor Farjeon, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Marianne Moore. Beautiful illustrations and classic entries make this a wonderful addition to any library. AUTHOR: Jackie Morris is a celebrated author and illustrator, and the winner of the Welsh Books Council Tir na n-Og Award for her title "The Seal Children". Her illustrations for "How the Whale Became", by Ted Hughes (2000) were universally praised and prompted the "Guardian" to comment 'This exquisite new edition provides illustrations whose rich, grave, muted, almost medieval beauty is in perfect harmony with the deceptive simplicity of the words.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short subject films have a long history in American cinemas. These could be anywhere from 2 to 40 minutes long and were used as a "filler" in a picture show that would include a cartoon, a newsreel, possibly a serial and a short before launching into the feature film. Shorts could tackle any topic of interest: an unusual travelogue, a comedy, musical revues, sports, nature or popular vaudeville acts. With the advent of sound-on-film in the mid-to-late 1920s, makers of earlier silent short subjects began experimenting with the short films, using them as a testing ground for the use of sound in feature movies. After the Second World War, and the rising popularity of television, short subject films became far too expensive to produce and they had mostly disappeared from the screens by the late 1950s. This encyclopedia offers comprehensive listings of American short subject films from the 1920s through the 1950s.

I have heard since that it was reprinted in every paper in America, and I have evidence that it soon reached, and was widely read, in Canada, the Cape, and Australia. I myself sent it, and spoke of it to many friends. Here, I said to myself, is one of the first, spontaneous, natural, democratic utterances in the war, and it comes from my own West country. Book excerpt: A Little Book of Poetry: For When Night Seems Dark is a collection of powerful and moving poems which remind us that although we will have difficulties in this world, we are not alone, unseen, or forgotten. That although at times we may feel like a small, insignificant being in this giant universe, we are of great importance to the One who created us. That in this world, we will experience joy and sorrow, tears and laughter, beginnings and endings, but with God at our side, we need never be without hope. This Little book is made up of 26 poems, each accompanied by a Bible verse and an original, full-color illustration.
