Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title offers a comprehensive analysis of Baptist theology. Embracing in one common trajectory the major Baptist confessions of faith, the major Baptist theologians, and the principal Baptist theological movements and controversies, this book spans four centuries of Baptist doctrinal history. Acknowledging first the pre-1609 roots (patristic, medieval, and Reformational) of Baptist theology, it examines the Arminian versus Calvinist issues that were first expressed by the General Baptists and the Particular Baptists; that dominated English and American Baptist theology during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries from Helwys and Smyth and from Bunyan and Kiffin to Gill, Fuller, Backus, and Boyce; and, that were quickened by the 'awakenings' and the missionary movement. Concurrently there were the Baptist defense of the Baptist distinctives vis-a-vis the pedobaptist world and the unfolding of a strong Baptist confessional tradition. Then during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the liberal versus evangelical issues became dominant with Hovey, Strong, Rauschenbusch, and Henry in the North and Mullins, Conner, Hobbs, and Criswell in the South even as a distinctive Baptist Landmarkism developed, the discipline of biblical theology was practiced and a structured ecumenism was pursued. Missiology both impacted Baptist theology and took it to all the continents, where it became increasingly indigenous. Conscious that Baptists belong to the free churches and to the believers' churches, a new generation of Baptist theologians at the advent of the twenty-first century appears somewhat more Calvinist than Arminian and decidedly more evangelical than liberal.

Book excerpt: I am glad to present from the press of the same publishers the present work entitled, "Baptists and Their Doctrines." Although nearly two thousand years of Christian history has been chronicled since Jesus came, it still remains true in many quarters that Baptists are much misunderstood. In remote districts it is yet alleged by those ignorant of the Baptist position that we are ignorant, prejudiced, narrow and supersectarian. The exact reverse is true. The Baptist position is as broad as the New Testament.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a Mormon be a Christian? How does that work? That’s the idea behind this personal book by Robert Starling, a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who grew up in the heart of the Bible Belt. Some folks there (and elsewhere) believe that Mormons are members of a non-Christian “cult”. Robert’s purpose for this book is not to convert anyone, but to give his “strong reasons” to dispel that misconception. As a child of converts to Mormonism whose uncle is a retired Methodist pastor, Robert has a unique perspective to share with Mormons and non-Mormons alike. He attended a Baptist vacation Bible school as a child (and so did his own children) and his best friend in college at Georgia Tech was the president of the Catholic student Newman Club. Having resided in Utah for twenty years where he worked as a media producer for the LDS Church at its worldwide headquarters, Robert has lived “really inside Mormonism” for decades. While Robert is not an official spokesman for the LDS Church, he has trained local church leaders in how to work with news media. He’s been active in defending his faith from critics (he’s been sued by them twice for a total of $30 million) and sharing his knowledge with anyone interested in learning what Mormons really believe. For instance: Do Mormons believe in a “different” Jesus? What do Mormons believe about the Trinity? How are Mormons “saved”? Do Mormons baptize dead people? Is there only “one true church”? What happens in Mormon temples? Do Mormons wear “magic underwear”? Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith? Is the Bible God’s word for Mormons? Do Mormons want to become like God? What kind of evidences does Robert use to make his case? Whether you’re a Mormon or not, you’ll be surprised. Take a look inside and find out! (and be sure to read the introduction)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Baptist Doctrines: Addresses Delivered at the North American Pre-Convention Conference, Des Moines, Iowa, June 21, 1921 From time to time our Baptist fathers put forth confessions of faith, thus declaring and defining their principles. Not creeds to which they demanded allegiance, but standards about which they might rally. Has not the time come when Baptists once again should announce to the world their beliefs, when a standard should once again be raised? But are not all such confessions in some sense a violation of the principles of soul liberty, a principle dear to the hearts of our people? We de sire here to declare that this matter of soul liberty is being tremendously overworked by some who reject the very princi ples of those who died to make soul liberty the heritage of our age. Originally this principle guaranteed to men the right to worship God as they pleased. It emphasized the fact that in the Christian economy no man or group of men could exercise authority over the conscience of the humblest man on earth. Our Baptist fathers had a very clearly de fined system of truth, and this was put forth in many noble confessions of faith. They knew no soul liberty which guar anteed to members of Baptist churches the right to believe what they pleased. Ito reject fundamental Baptist principles and practices while remaining a member of a Baptist Church and to use the doctrine of soul liberty in extenuation of such a course is to pervert the doctrine and to make it a menace to the Church of Christ. The Movement for promoting the fundamentals of our holy faith is just beginning. It aims to be constructive rather than destructive. It seeks to unite our Denomination rather than to divide it. It calls upon Baptists everywhere to rally to our age-long and time-honored principles. The Movement will put forth a literature of its own. This volume contains the addresses delivered at the second of our general conferences. These ad dresses manifest a fine, tolerant spirit while expressing in no uncertain way a genuine devotion to the Word of God.
