Book excerpt: Not Forgotten: Inspiring Missionary Pioneers remembers eighteen women and men, who lived to fulfill Christ's mandate: "Go and make disciples of all nations." Their breathtaking stories span two centuries and cross multiple continents. In order to share the Gospel, these missionaries faced perilous voyages, brutal wars, typhoons, and deadly plagues. You will meet a wandering Jew in Brazil, a tiny woman fighting human trafficking in China, teachers, doctors, a founding father, a soldier, and even a ventriloquist. Their lives will motivate you to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ more faithfully and to live for Him more fully as you see their bold faith in action: Gripping efforts to get the Gospel to the ends of the earth Stirring compassion for the lost and the destitute Perseverance in the face of unimaginable suffering Ordinary men and women empowered by our extraordinary God! God is calling people everywhere to be reconciled to Him through His Son Jesus Christ who died for sinners. These inspiring missionary pioneers dedicated their lives to proclaiming this Good News. Will you join them? Dr. David J. Brady has been a pastor for almost thirty years. He was born in Guyana to Southern Baptist missionaries, Otis and Martha Brady, and was raised in Belize. David and his wife Jennifer live on Shadowlands Farm in North Carolina with their animals. His first book The Gospel for Pet Lovers is a wonderful evangelistic resource. David has been active in supporting cross-cultural missions throughout his ministry. This book combines his love for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and his interest in the history of missions.

Book excerpt: Insights from the Lives of Olive Doke and Paul Kasonga for Pioneer Mission and Church Planting Today deals with the question of the hand over process of pioneer missionaries to the first indigenous leaders in church planting missions situations. It recognises the fact this process when wrongly handled has caused a lot of harm to the work of missions. The case study in this thesis, which took place at the start of Baptist work in Zambia, shows one example in which it was done exceptionally well. The researcher also uses biblical interpretation and qualitative empirical analysis to augment his research. He finally posits that the mutual respect and mutual admiration between Olive Doke and Paul Kasonga is what led to this admirable result.

Book excerpt: Few lives, since biblical times at least, have had a greater impact on Christian missionary vision and enterprise, or set a higher example of personal holiness and devotion to God, than that of David Brainerd. William Carey, often called the father of modern missions, valued the story of Brainerd's life so highly that he encouraged his co-workers to read it through three times a year. John Wesley urged all his preachers to read carefully the life of Brainerd and to 'be followers of him, as he was of Christ'. Henry Martyn, Robert Murray M'Cheyne, Jim Eliot and Oswald J. Smith all testified to their esteem of David Brainerd and to the encouragement to greater holiness and faithfulness in service for God that they derived from his example. In making the life of Brainerd available for the modern reader John Thornbury draws frequently on Brainerd's own account in his personal Diary and his letters as well as the writings of his friend and mentor Jonathan Edwards. He also helps us to understand and evaluate the life and achievements of Brainerd in the context of the times in which he lived. The story of this remarkable man, whose life was so short but so full, will encourage God's people today, like those of previous generations, in their pilgrim walk and inspire them to greater commitment to evangelism and missions.

It has also developed strategies and methods that have been adopted by numerous other missions groups. Make Disciples of All Nations tells the story of this groundbreaking organization, including its most recent developments. Besides recounting its historical development, the contributors to this volume critically evaluate the IMB's strategies and methods, as well as examine its controversies, regional developments, and organizational changes. The concluding chapter explores how Southern Baptist missions can best adapt to an era of global Christianity. Students, missionaries, and those involved in supporting them will be informed and encouraged by this account of one of the oldest and largest missions organizations in the world.

Book excerpt: William Carey, often dubbed "The Father of Modern Missions," and Adoniram Judson, America's first intercontinental missionary, were pioneers whose missions overlapped in chronology, geography, and purpose. However, rarely are they both featured in the same volume or compared and contrasted. Here we have unique material by some of the world's leading experts on these two giants of missionary history, with perspectives on these men in ways never seen before. Especially relevant to this current age of World Christianity are the perspectives from India and Burma, the lands which received these men for their missionary enterprise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten Who Changed the World is seminary president Daniel Akin’s powerful tribute to the transformational work done by some truly inspiring Christian missionaries. With each profile, he journeys into the heart of that gospel servant’s mission-minded story and makes a compelling connection to a similar account from the Bible. David Brainerd (1718-1747; missionary to Native Americans) reminds Akin of Paul’s missionary life in 2 Timothy. The faithful ministry of George Leile (1750-1820; missionary to Jamaica) is aligned with Galatians 6. William Carey (1761-1834; missionary to India) lives out the Great Commission of Matthew 28. There are parallels between Adoniram Judson (1788-1850; missionary to Burma) and Romans 8. Lottie Moon (1840-1912; missionary to China) displays the power of a consecrated life described in Romans 12. The work of James Fraser (1886-1938; missionary to China) illustrates Revelation 5. Eric Liddell (1902-1945; missionary to China), his life documented in the film Chariots of Fire, illuminates Hebrews 12. Together, John (1907-1934) and Betty Stam (1906-1934; missionaries to China) embodied Psalm 67. William Wallace (1908-1951; missionary to China) was a shining example of Philippians 1. Jim Elliot (1927-1956; missionary to Ecuador) is a bold reminder of Psalm 96.

Book excerpt: This book chronicles the pioneering efforts of Edward Winter Clark and Mary Mead Clark, the first American Baptist missionaries who successfully planted the good news of Jesus Christ in Nagaland, India. Its author, Dr. Narola Ao McFayden, a great-granddaughter of the first Naga pastor who worked with this missionary couple, draws upon archival materials such as original letters, correspondence, and articles by and about the Clarks to reveal the nature of their groundbreaking work and the courage of the Naga people who received these missionaries. From these materials, she crafts a story of pioneers - of pioneering missionaries and pioneering Nagas - and of the ways in which they together crossed geographic, social, political, cultural, religious, and linguistic borders.

Book excerpt: Legendary Southern Baptist missionary Charlotte "Lottie" Moon played a pivotal role in revolutionizing southern civil society. Her involvement in the establishment of the Women's Missionary Union provided white Baptist women with an alternate means of gaining and asserting power within the denomination's organizational structure and changed it forever. In Lottie Moon: A Southern Baptist Missionary to China in History and Legend Regina Sullivan provides the first comprehensive portrait of "Lottie," who not only empowered women but also inspired the formation of one of the most influential religious organizations in the United States. Despite being the daughter of slaveholders in antebellum Virginia, Moon never lived the life of a typical southern belle. Highly educated and influenced by models of independent womanhood, including an older sister who was a woman's rights advocate, an open opponent of slavery, and the first Virginian female to earn a medical degree, Moon followed her sister's lead and utilized her extensive education to successfully combine the language of woman's rights with the egalitarian impulse of evangelical Protestantism. In 1873 Moon found her true calling, however, in missionary work in China. During her tenure there she recommended that the week before Christmas be designated as a time of giving to foreign missions. In response to her vision, thousands of Southern Baptist women organized local missionary societies to collect funds, and in 1888, the Woman's Missionary Union was founded as the Southern Baptist Convention's female auxiliary for missionary work. Sullivan credits Moon's role in the establishment of the Woman's Missionary Union as having a significant impact on the erosion of patriarchal power and women's new engagement with the public sphere. Since her initial plea in 1888, the Missionary Union's annual "Lottie Moon Christmas Offering" has raised over a billion dollars to support missionary work. Lottie Moon captures the influence and culminating effect of one woman's personal, spiritual, and civic calling.
