Book Synopsis Baptism and Regeneration by : J. I. Packer
Download or read book Baptism and Regeneration written by J. I. Packer and published by Anglican House Pub Incorporated. This book was released on 2015-02-02 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God has instituted specific rites (actions done with created things) linked with specific words whereby he attests what the specific acts symbolize and so confirms promises to, and furthers fellowship with, the recipients of his saving and enriching mercy. Mainstream Christianity views created entities as symbols reflecting God and imparting a sense of the divine drawing mind and heart Godward. Holy Baptism as a rite of admission to church communion is integral to Anglicanism, each version of the Book of Common Prayer having contained a baptismal liturgy commonly used despite rival schools of thought about particular phrases. These tensions remaining with us today, Dr. Packer's essay attempts to clear the ground for an acceptable baptismal liturgy for use in the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA), hopefully with theological agreement on all key points. This essay also addresses the Anglican practice of Infant Baptism as appropriate, fitting the situation, and honoring to God.

Book excerpt: Baptism has been a contested practice from the very beginning of the church. In this volume, Ben Witherington rethinks the theology of baptism and does so in constant conversation with the classic theological positions and central New Testament texts. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Forms for Baptism, Admission to the Communion, Administration of the Lord's Supper, Marriage and Funerals: Conformed to the Doctrine and Discipline of the Presbyterian Church Notwithstanding the fact that the founders of all the several national branches of the Reformed Church prepared and used written formularies of public worship (as, e.g., Calvin, Knox, the authors of the Dutch and the German Reformed Liturgies, and in the next century Richard Baxter), the genius of Scottish and American Presbyterianism has discarded them as uncongenial, and the matured judgment of our Church has pronounced them to be inexpedient. The action of our recent General Assemblies from 1873 to 1875 proves that the mind of the Church is decidedly averse to the recommendation by authority of even the simplest forms for special services. With this jealous care for the freedom and spirituality of the Church the compiler of this little manual is in perfect sympathy. Nevertheless, accurate verbal preparation is felt by all to be necessary for the edifying performance of certain special services, as, for instance, the administration of Baptism and the Lord's Supper, the admission of the baptized to full communion, and the celebration of Marriage. Any approximation to a uniformity of method in these particulars which can be secured without the sacrifice of freedom and adaptability to varying circumstances will be generally welcomed.
