Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years foreign bank participation has increased tremendously in Latin America. Some observers argue that foreign bank entry will benefit Latin American banking systems by reducing the volatility of loans and deposits and increasing efficiency. Others are concerned that foreign banks might choose to extend credit only to certain customers, leaving some sectors-such as small businesses-unserved. The authors examine this issue. Using bank-level data for Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Peru during the mid-1990s, they empirically investigate whether bank origin affects the share and growth rate of bank lending to small businesses. They find that although foreign banks generally lent less to small businesses (as share of total lending) than private domestic banks, the difference is due primarily to the behavior of small foreign banks. The difference was considerably smaller for large and medium-sized banks. And in Chile and Colombia, large foreign banks might actually lend slightly more (as share of total lending) than large domestic banks.

Book Synopsis Structured Finance in Latin America by : Hela Cheikhrouhou
Download or read book Structured Finance in Latin America written by Hela Cheikhrouhou and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structured Finance in Latin America explores how structured finance mechanisms can channel pension savings to support projects in underserved sectors, deepen capital markets, and contribute to investment and economic growth. Private pension funds have been accumulating assets rapidly in the wake of pension system reforms in many Latin American countries. Strict investment regulations to protect workers' savings have limited their investment in highly creditworthy domestic securities, yet pension fund demand for new securities has outstripped issuance of eligible traditional corporate debt instruments. This has contributed to a high concentration of pension fund assets in public debt. Innovative structured finance mechanisms can help bring to the market a new set of creditworthy securities backed by pools of loans to small borrowers, mortgage loans or the expected proceeds of large infrastructure projects. These mechanisms create new investment opportunities for pension funds, while establishing additional sources of funding for underserved market segments. Policy makers and regulatory authorities have a catalytic role to play in the development of structured finance securities by establishing a conducive legal, regulatory, and tax framework. Structured Finance in Latin America serves as a practical guide for development practitioners, policy makers, and others working in government, international or nongovernmental organizations, and financial institutions, who focus on finance and investment; infrastructure, transport, and urban development; housing finance; small and medium-sized enterprise development; and pension reform.

Download or read book Financial Inclusion written by Ms.Era Dabla-Norris and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-09-28 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) have made important strides in promoting financial inclusion of firms and households. However, while the region is broadly at par with its peers on financial inclusion of firms, household inclusion lags behind. Nonetheless, there is substantial heterogeneity across LAC countries. Reducing borrowing costs and strengthening further the regulatory environment, while taking steps to protect efficiency and stability of the financial system, could help close financial inclusion gaps. Reducing financial participation and monitoring costs and relaxing collateral constraints will help spur growth and reduce inequality though trade-offs are likely, as illustrated in the case of Guatemala, El Salvador, and Peru.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanding Access to Financial Services in Latin America examines how macroeconomic conditions and adjustment processes have affected efforts to incorporate small businesses into national financial systems. Constraints include restrictive monetary policies, inflation and high interest rates, as well as the informal and under-capitalized nature of a sector traditionally excluded from access to banking services. Policy recommendations from case studies on Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, Peru and Uruguay point to the importance of market-based allocation tools and a growing role of nongovernmental organizations at different levels of the credit management process.
Download or read book Safe Money written by Beatriz Marulanda and published by Inter-American Development Bank. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policymakers in Latin America increasingly are turning to policies that have high economic rates of return and a favorable impact on income distribution. By providing financial services to small businesses and poor households -which normally lack such services- credit unions help secure growth with equity. The challenges faced by Latin America's credit unions today are likely to force them to further modernize and consolidate, fine tune their inherent advantages, improve mechanisms for prudential regulation, and find ways to increase their share of low and middle-income markets. Safe Money presents the new thinking on how credit unions can compete effectively in modern financial markets while still retaining their social mission.
Book Synopsis Unlocking Credit by : Inter-American Development Bank
Download or read book Unlocking Credit written by Inter-American Development Bank and published by IDB. This book was released on 2004 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Bank loans are the main source of credit for businesses across Latin America, so understanding what determines the depth, cost, and volatility of bank credit is crucial to designing strategies that ensure financial stability and promote growth. This new edition of Economic and Social Progress in Latin America provides a comprehensive analysis of the region's all-important banking industry. The book examines two-way interactions between macroeconomic policies and financial intermediation -- not only how these policies affect banking but how banks weather intermediate shocks, and how industry incentives can prompt bank portfolio choices that influence economic policy. The report also discusses how elements of a financial safety net -- including deposit insurance, prudential regulation, protection of creditor rights, and legal and judicial enforcement -- can mitigate factors that make credit more volatile and constrain its expansion. Finally, the report studies how the banking industry's market structure affects its performance. Particular attention is given to the role of government- versus foreign-owned banks, access to credit by small and medium-sized enterprises, and the development of mortgage credit markets.

Book excerpt: Entrepreneurship -- manifested in the entry of new firms or products into new markets, or substantial improvements in technological capacity or process innovation by incumbent firms -- is widely considered to be an important ingredient for long term economic development. This report argues that entrepreneurship is also a source of employment generation, export growth, and resilience during economic downturns. Although the conventional wisdom suggests that Latin American and Caribbean countries underperform relative to China and other emerging markets in terms of its entrepreneurial dynamism, t.
Book Synopsis Financial Integration in Latin America by : Mr.Charles Enoch
Download or read book Financial Integration in Latin America written by Mr.Charles Enoch and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-04-10 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With growth slowing across much of the Latin America as a result of the end of the commodity supercycle and economic rebalancing in China, as well as fragmentation of the international banking system, policies to stimulate growth are needed. This book examines the financial landscapes of seven Latin American economies—Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Peru, and Uruguay—and makes a case for them to pursue regional financial integration. Chapters set out the benefits to the region of financial integration, the barriers to cross-border activity in banks, insurance companies, pension funds, and capital markets, as well as recommendations to address these barriers. Finally, the volume makes the case that regional integration now could be a step toward global integration in the short term.
