Now, in this revised edition, Ensminger has continued his diligent fieldwork and archival research into the origins, evolution, and distribution in North America of this significant agricultural structure. Book excerpt: Located on a hillside meadow in rural Vermont, Bank Barn is a new residence conceptuallyinspired by the eponymous regional farm structures built into the banks of hills. At Bank Barn,a weathered cedar gable form is situated atop two 160' linear concrete retaining walls. Utilizingthe sloping topography, the support spaces and garage entrance are concealed below gradeto create an extended plinth for the floor above. The main floor features an open living arrangementin a minimalist palette of exposed steel, plaster, concrete and curtainwall with expansiveand uninterrupted views beyond. The concrete walls extend the living space outside withdecks, green roof, hot tub and fire pit. Inside, a central freestanding steel staircase provides asculptural pathway to the ensuite bedrooms above. As the design developed the residence was additionally analyzed to help determine themechanical system design and specifications, both from an annual energy usage perspectiveand from a life-cycle cost analysis. The final design, an electricity-based energy system withgeothermal heating and cooling through water-to-water and water-to-air systems as well asheat recovery ventilators, was peer reviewed to confirm equipment sizing and performance. The project was designed to be a net-zero residence pending a future 18 kw solar array.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new edition of his classic book, award-winning author Jerry Apps shares a unique perspective on the great barns of rural Wisconsin. Digging deep as both an enthusiast and a farmer, Apps reaps a story of change: from the earliest pioneer structures to the low steel buildings of modern dairy farms, barns have adapted to meet the needs of each generation. They’ve housed wheat, tobacco, potatoes, and dairy cows, and they display the optimism, ingenuity, hard work, and practicality of the people who tend land and livestock. Featuring more than 100 stunning full-color photographs by Steve Apps, plus dozens of historic images, Barns of Wisconsin illuminates a vanishing way of life. The book explores myriad barn designs—from rectangular to round, from gable roof to gambrel, from fieldstone to wood—always with an eye to the history and craftsmanship of the Norwegians, Germans, Swiss, Finns, and others who built and used them. Barns of Wisconsin captures both the iconic and the unique, including historic and noteworthy barns, and discusses the disappearance of barns from our landscape and preservation efforts to save these important symbols of American agriculture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, farm families have shared work and equipment with their neighbours to complete labour-intensive, time-sensitive, and time-consuming tasks. They benefitted materially and socially from these voluntary, flexible, loosely structured networks of reciprocal assistance, making neighbourliness a vital but overlooked aspect of agricultural change. Being Neighbours takes us into the heart of neighbourhood – the set of people near and surrounding the family – through an examination of work bees in southern Ontario from 1830 to 1960. The bee was a special event where people gathered to work on a neighbour’s farm like bees in a hive for a wide variety of purposes, including barn raising, logging, threshing, quilting, turkey plucking, and apple paring. Drawing on the diaries of over one hundred men and women, Catharine Wilson takes readers into families’ daily lives, the intricacies of their labour exchange, and their workways, feasts, and hospitality. Through the prism of the bee and a close reading of the diaries, she uncovers the subtle social politics of mutual dependency, the expectations neighbours had of each other, and their ways of managing conflict and crisis. This book adds to the literature on cooperative work that focuses on evaluating its economic efficiency and complicates histories of capitalism that place communal values at odds with market orientation. Beautifully written, engaging, and richly detailed and illustrated, Being Neighbours reveals the visceral textures of rural life.
