Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1950s when the evidence on smoking causing serious, fatal diseases began consolidating, hundreds of millions of smokers have quit. Overwhelmingly, the great majority quit unassisted without any professional or pharmaceutical help. But from the late 1970s, massive campaigns have urged smokers not to go the cold turkey route and instead take nicotine replacement therapy, prescribed drugs and most recently, to vape. Simon Chapman is a veteran researcher, a global public health advocate and an Australian Skeptic of the Year. In this book he analyses the relentless push to medicalise and commodify quitting and sets out those policies and campaigns which have collectively driven smoking rates down to record low levels.

Book excerpt: Tobacco has become one of the most widely used and traded commoditites on the planet. Reflecting contemporary anthropological interest in material culture studies, Anthropology of Tobacco makes the plant the centre of its own contentious, global story in which, instead of a passive commodity, tobacco becomes a powerful player in a global adventure involving people, corporations and public health. Bringing together a range of perspectives from the social and natural sciences as well as the arts and humanities, Anthropology of Tobacco weaves stories together from a range of historical, cross-cultural and literary sources and empirical research. These combine with contemporary anthropological theories of agency and cross-species relationships to offer fresh perspectives on how an apparently humble plant has progressed to world domination, and the consequences of it having done so. It also considers what needs to happen if, as some public health advocates would have it, we are seriously to imagine ‘a world without tobacco’. This book presents students, scholars and practitioners in anthropology, public health and social policy with unique and multiple perspectives on tobacco-human relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tobacco, as has been amply proven, is hazardous to people's health. Nevertheless, in many of the countries of the Americas increasing urbanization and changing lifestyles have resulted in greater use of tobacco. At the same time, health and disease patterns in the developing countries of the hemisphere are undergoing and "epidemiologic transition," with chronic noncommunicable diseases displacing infectious diseases as the primary causes of morbidity and mortality. In the next few decades, these countries can be expected to face, and will need to prepare for, an epidemic of smoking-related diseases, particularly lung cancer, and a proportionaly imposing burden on national health services. To confront that epidemic and alleviate that burden, greater understanding is necessary of the historical, economic, political, and publich health aspects of the supply, demand, and consumption of tobacco. This publication aims to further that understanding by providing information on the general socioeconomic context, the tobacco industry, tobacco use, smoking and its effects on health, and smoking prevention and control activities in the countries of Latin America, the Caribbean, and Canada. Most of the information contained in this pulication cannot e found in any other single source. It will thus serve as a baseline of data for developing countries in the Region as they engage in the complex issues involved in preventing and controlling tobacco use. Health workers, researchers, and policy makers can use the information presented here to build a coalition against what may prove to be the most important pulic health problem of the 1990sm.

Book excerpt: This excursion into American cultural history looks at the toothpaste and toothbrush industries from 1900 to 2008. During these years, America moved from cleaning their teeth mostly with homemade powders to using an enormous array of brands, often applied with an electric toothbrush. From early 20th century products like Forhan's (which "cured" pyorrhea) to the whiteners of the 1920s (which unfortunately also removed tooth enamel), and from paste that eliminated "that clinging film" and to copywriters who "wondered where the yellow went," the history of toothpaste has long been a testament to the power of misleading advertising. Interrupting a steady flow of hyperbole was the one true wonder ingredient--fluoride, which enabled Crest to be for decades America's top-selling brand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn how to talk—and listen—to your elderly clients Pharmacy Practice in an Aging Society examines the aspects of aging that transcend physical and biological changes, addressing practical concerns such as communication, understanding values, and end-of-life issues. This unique book provides pharmacists with the basics on how to enhance their service to the elderly and offers additional suggestions for improving the empathy and understanding they have for their patients. The book explores general health and pharmacy concerns of the elderly, including abuse, neglect, sexuality, stress, and addictions, and presents methods of helping seniors stay healthy through exercise and with appropriate interventions. 34 figures, tables, and exhibits make complex information easy to access and understand. Fewer than five percent of persons over 65 end up in a nursing home, and many stay only long enough to recover or rehabilitate before returning home. The other 95 percent need our attention and our care. Pharmacy Practice in an Aging Society helps pharmacists develop the special tools they need to deal with the elderly, identifying the most challenging areas, and providing effective frameworks for addressing them. The book also includes sidebars that summarize important ideas, including: “Communication”—choosing the right words when delivering difficult or even unwelcome information to patients “Ethics on the Spot”—anticipating difficult questions and determining if information is appropriate to pass along to a patient “Statistics at a Glance”—comparative statistics presented in a way that makes a point “Cutting Edge”—current research findings and what they mean to your patients “Too Late Now”—when changing a patient’s behavior or adding a medication is unlikely to help “Then and Now”—compares past treatment and approaches with current ones and much more! Pharmacy Practice in an Aging Society is an essential resource for community and hospital pharmacists, educators, and anyone else with an interest in health.
