Book Synopsis Campbell County by : The Campbell County Historical Society
Download or read book Campbell County written by The Campbell County Historical Society and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Campbell County, formed in 1782 from Bedford County, was the first Virginia county created after the Revolutionary War. It is named for Gen. William Campbell, patriot commander at the Battle of King's Mountain and brother-in-law to Patrick Henry. Scotch Irish Presbyterians settled the Hat Creek area in the late 1730s. Soon after, the Flat Creek area was settled, followed by the Concord area. The county gave up portions of its land in 1845 and 1848 to help form Appomattox County. Historically an agrarian area, several of the towns arose from the tobacco industry while others were railroad towns. The county has changed since its early days of manufacturing and railroad-dominant towns to being primarily residential, but its residents continue to treasure their heritage and appreciate the contributions the county has made over the years.
Download or read book Campbell written by Karen Brey and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The charming city of Campbell sits amid bustling urban neighbors in California's "Silicon Valley." For many years known as the "Orchard City," Campbell is still very much a small town clinging fiercely to its identity. Benjamin Campbell founded a hay and grain farm on what is now downtown Campbell in 1851. Shrewdly selling off one of his acres for $5 for a railroad depot, Campbell soon subdivided his farm. The resulting town evolved into a rail center for shipping fruit across the continent and around the globe. Campbell Fruit Growers' Union, a large co-operative, sent apricots and prunes to dry yards that were at one time the largest in the world, and canneries like the J.C. Ainsley Packing Company and Geo. E. Hyde & Company became local giants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1960s and 1970s, Texas was rocked by a series of political transitions. Despite its century-long heritage of solidly Democratic politics, the state became a Republican stronghold virtually overnight, and by 1980 it was known as “Reagan Country.” Ultimately, Republicans dominated the Texas political landscape, holding all twenty-seven of its elected offices and carrying former governor George W. Bush to his second term as president with more than 61 percent of the Texas vote. Sean P. Cunningham examines the remarkable history of Republican Texas in Cowboy Conservatism: Texas and the Rise of the Modern Right. Utilizing extensive research drawn from the archives of four presidential libraries, gubernatorial papers, local campaign offices, and oral histories, Cunningham presents a compelling narrative of the most notable regional genesis of modern conservatism. Spanning the decades from Kennedy’s assassination to Reagan’s presidency, Cunningham reveals a vivid portrait of modern conservatism in one of the nation’s largest and most politically powerful states. The newest title in the New Directions in Southern History series, Cunningham’s Cowboy Conservatism demonstrates Texas’s distinctive and vital contributions to the transformation of postwar American politics.
