Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first study of Balzac's work to examine theatre in La Comédie humaine both as a theme in itself and for its influence on Balzac's techniques and modes of presentation in his novels, and to demonstrate the symbiotic influence of novel and stage on Balzac's work as a playwright and novelist. It will be of interest not only to students of Balzac, but also to students of nineteenth-century theatre and history. The introduction gives an account of Balzac's experience of the theatre; the first three chapters examine the historicity of Balzac's portrayal of the theatre world and how this portrayal serves his wider narrative purpose; the two following chapters demonstrate how and why Balzac relies on the theatre to provide a rich tissue of metaphor and bank of expressive devices with which to communicate his critique of society; finally the work shows how Balzac succeeded in bringing to the stage the same scrutiny of the capitalist ethos which underpins La Comédie humaine. An index of references to playwrights, plays, actors and stage characters in La Comédie humaine is given in an appendix.

Book Synopsis The Representation of Mesmerism in Honoré de Balzac's La Comédie Humaine by : K. Melissa Marcus
Download or read book The Representation of Mesmerism in Honoré de Balzac's La Comédie Humaine written by K. Melissa Marcus and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1995 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1778, the Austrian physician, Franz Anton Mesmer, arrived in Paris to present his new doctrine: animal magnetism, later called mesmerism. His stay in Paris provoked a lasting interest in, and fascination with mesmerism, in particular among various circles of European Romantic writers. This book treats the theme of mesmerism in French writer Balzac's La comédie humaine by demonstrating how Balzac acts as «literary healer, » given his belief in the healing power of mesmerism. It shows how mesmerism, considered a panacea, may become a form of social action. It also examines Balzac's use of mesmerism as cosmological theory to illustrate his belief in one unifying principle for all intellectual and spiritual systems.
Book Synopsis Between Doctors and Patients by : Lilian R. Furst
Download or read book Between Doctors and Patients written by Lilian R. Furst and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there are many books on the mechanics of doctor-patient interaction, none has previously confronted the philosophical and psychological issues of power and trust that bind these figures. One consequence of their changed relationship, Furst asserts, has been the decrease of interest in patients as individuals. In this time of impersonal HMOs and spiraling health-care costs, she hopes that doctors and patients can learn from the past and eventually find a mutually beneficial balance of power that will see medicine as both a science and an art and will recognize human understanding as an integral element of healing.
Download or read book Spellbound written by Maria Tatar and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franz Anton Mesmer's concept of animal magnetism exercised a profound influence on key European and American thinkers. Mesmer, who saw in his discovery the secret of health, had hoped to recover the harmony between man and nature by harnessing the power of magnetic fluids. In calling attention to the existence of a second self that surfaces in the hypnotic trance, Mesmer made his real contribution and took the first, decisive steps on the road leading to the unconscious. While most critical studies of mesmerism originate in the history of science or medicine, Maria Tatar's book takes a fresh approach by tracing the impact of mesmerism on literature. The author launches her account with a portrait of Mesmer and places his views in the context of eighteenth-century thought. She then explores the significance of Mesmer's ideas and studies their influence on nineteenth-century German, French, and American writers. In conclusion, she examines the ways in which modern authors absorbed and reshaped the mesmerist legacy bequeathed to them by earlier generations. Whether discussing the electrical energy vibrating through Kleist's dramas, the electrical heat radiating from Hoffmann's figures, the streams of magnetic fluid coursing through Balzac's novels, or the magnetic chain of humanity linking Hawthorne's characters, Professor Tatar recaptures the meaning of ideas, motifs, and metaphors often overlooked by literary critics. Her study illuminates, in a remarkable way, the subtle connections between science, psychology, and literature. Originally published in 1978. Book Synopsis Weaving Balzac's Web by : James Madden
Download or read book Weaving Balzac's Web written by James Madden and published by Summa Publications, Inc.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the process by which Balzac made use of the unique structure of his fictional world to create subtlety and complexity both within and between the individual works of "La Comedie humaine." Internal narrations--scenes of story-telling--offer a particularly rich field of study as characters tell each other stories about other characters. Because of the system of recurring characters, Balzac's narrative framing creates layers of meaning, thus raising questions that resonate throughout the whole textual edifice. "Weaving Balzac's Web" shows how story-telling scenes can serve as windows into the depths of Balzac's masterpiece and reveal the carefully construction complexities and ambiguities that lie enmeshed in its vast narrative web.
